Kraft slouched in his chair. Beside him leaned a freshly broken-off plank, its splinters still unfiled. A huge, broken circle had been drawn on one side in charcoal.

They ended up buying the table after all. The owner hadn't dared refuse a group of rather abnormal people, especially when the most abnormal one was a noble carrying a sword.

Judging by the owner's attitude, they couldn't stay at that inn. Kraft gathered his few belongings, hung them on the horse stabled there, and checked into another inn. Before leaving, he remembered to borrow a handsaw from the owner and cut off the plank to take with him.

Now they were sitting in a room at the new inn. There was only one chair, so Liston and Lucius had to sit on the edge of the bed.

Kraft pulled up the small blanket covering him and edged a little closer to the stove. "Tomorrow, we'll go to the Salt Tide District together, keep watch over the well, and tell them they can't drink from it anymore."

"So you really think they'll believe us and agree to walk farther every day to fetch water?" Liston was skeptical. "And in your current condition, can you really go tomorrow?"

Kraft had only just changed out of his damp clothes and rinsed away the grains of salt that kept irritating his minor scrapes. Now he was claiming he could go to the Salt Tide District tomorrow. Liston seriously doubted he could manage it.

"Don't worry. Even on a battlefield, I can hold out for a few rounds."
