Background / History

Lucius is a young nobleman from Sharp who had lived in Wenden Port for four years by the time he met Kraft. He was studying at the Medical School and enthusiastically invited Kraft to observe a treatment, using his familiarity with the institution to bring him into its clinical teaching area. 14

Professor Calman regarded Lucius as his most trustworthy and talented student. Before leaving for Dunling, Calman entrusted him with Black Fluid samples, research records, a confidential letter for Kraft, and access to his private laboratory. 23

Lucius participated in Calman's Black Fluid experiments, including ingesting diluted solution. He later admitted to secretly scratching the sample bottle with a stone chip to estimate dosages, without notifying Calman. 28 29 The discovery that Calman had withheld part of the fluid deeply affected him, as Lucius viewed the professor as a father figure and academic guide. 28 46

Personality

Lucius is intensely curious about medicine and scientific advancement. He considers the Black Fluid's ability to render patients unconscious highly valuable for surgery, and initially regards Kraft's caution toward it as insufficiently justified. 34 36 His willingness to participate in experiments reflects his belief that medicine must pursue opportunities for progress despite uncertainty. 36

He is also conscientious in ordinary medical work. Lucius carefully handles follow-up records, notices even minor corrections concerning a patient's mental state, and brings possible risks to Kraft's attention despite believing the information may be unimportant. 40

His loyalty to Calman initially overrides his suspicions. Even after encountering evidence of the professor's abnormal behavior, Lucius refuses to accept accusations against him without direct proof. 46 47 Once Calman's actions become undeniable, however, Lucius chooses to distance himself from the forbidden research rather than pursue its promised knowledge. 63
