Background / History
Kup lived alone in a cramped shack in Wenden Port's Salt Tide District. After drinking contaminated well water, he suffered worsening lethargy for two months and began experiencing abnormal dreams. Kraft identified his condition as a serious supernatural threat rather than an ordinary illness. 72 74 75
Kup's spiritual body was dragged into the Deep Layer by an unknown creature. Kraft followed, pulled him away from the creature's attack, and escaped with him; Kup awoke with his former religious worldview shattered by what he had witnessed. 76 77
Half a month later, Kup voluntarily sought out Kraft at Wenden Port Academy. Having lost his faith and finding no meaning in his former life, he chose to follow the man who saved him. Kraft considered him a promising subordinate due to his dockworker-honed physique, mental resilience, and lack of family ties in Wenden Port. 78
Kup initially viewed himself as little more than a conspicuous accessory to demonstrate Kraft's status. He asked to learn weapon use instead, beginning training intended to prepare him for service as a guard and possible knightly advancement. 95 97
Personality
Kup is cautious, practical, and strongly aware of his own limitations. He is willing to act under pressure, but his experiences with the Deep Layer, violent dreams, and repeated supernatural encounters leave him wary rather than reckless. 113 128 356
His loyalty to Kraft is immediate and enduring. Although he sometimes doubts his usefulness, he refuses an offered chance to leave for a safer, stable profession and states plainly that he has no intention of changing his path. 95 109 227
He grows into a responsible protector. During a nighttime intrusion, he hides Yvonne and Peter, prepares a defense despite his fear, and later fights attackers alongside Yvonne. 113 115 116
Abilities & Skills
Combat Training
Kup trains under Kraft as a squire and uses blunt weapons suited to his physical strength.
- Chose weapon training in order to become a capable guard rather than remain a passive attendant. 95
- Uses a mace and later a Page Hammer; Kraft initially considers the mace a practical weapon that can provide immediate stopping power despite Kup's limited skill. 96 102
- Defends Yvonne and Peter during a nighttime attack, but his inexperience leaves him vulnerable to an enemy capable of disappearing and reappearing at short range. 113 115 125
- Fights with Yvonne against subsequent attackers and kills the last assailant. 116
Medical and Investigative Aptitude
Kup receives basic literacy instruction from Kraft and develops practical observational skills.
- Learns reading and basic vocabulary under Kraft, though he initially prioritizes martial training over academics. 96 97 113
- Demonstrates stronger learning and memory performance than Yvonne during Kraft's instruction. 136
- Identifies recovered bone fragments as human ribs and vertebrae, then assembles them into a partial skeleton. 355
- Recognizes a failed casting mold and retrieves a suspicious half-silver, wing-shaped object during an outbreak investigation. 388
- Works increasingly as an indoor assistant, handling desk work and maintaining unusually strict cleanliness; he also assists Dr. David with puncture needles. 265 386
Anomalous Perception and Resilience
Kup has repeatedly endured contact with Deep Layer phenomena and can sometimes perceive threats unseen by others.
- His spiritual body visibly “faded” after Deep Layer contact and was vulnerable to being forcibly pulled into the Deep Layer. 75 76
- Suffers violent, death-related dreams after his first combat experiences. 128
- Senses the dragon-like Scale Thoughtform and intuitively identifies it as a dragon when Yvonne and the Priest cannot perceive it. 390
- Determines that the Scale Thoughtform is linked to cognition rather than being purely physical, then wounds it with an arrowhead. 391
Equipment
- Mace — Purchased as a practical beginner's weapon relying on brute force. 96
- Page Hammer — His usual close-combat weapon during the Southern Hills expedition. 102 113
- Forging hammer — Carried during the investigation into the Scale Thoughtform. 390
- Lead box — Used to secure the carved white flake recovered from the mountain. 390
Relationships
- Kraft — Master, rescuer, and mentor. Kraft saves Kup from the Deep Layer, trains him in weapons and literacy, and treats him as a trusted subordinate rather than merely an attendant. 76 78 95 133
- Yvonne — Fellow trainee and frequent field partner. Kup encourages her literacy efforts, works with her during investigations, and is saved by her intervention during an attack. 113 115 355 388
- Peter — Companion during the Southern Hills expedition. Kup shares watch duty with him and tries to protect him during the nighttime assault. 113 115
- Benny — Ally during the mountain encounter with the Scale Thoughtform; the two are the only members of their group able to perceive the dragon-like entity. 390
