Background / History
Shrek has existed for over ten thousand years. Its entrance displays statues of its three recognized founders—Flender, Yu Xiaogang, and Liu Erlong—followed by statues of the first-generation Shrek Seven Devils. The academy’s early reputation was built around Flender’s principle of teaching “monsters” rather than ordinary students. 3 133 138
The academy occupies Shrek City’s eastern side. While it publicly claims to have no direct connection to Shrek City, the city is effectively autonomous: no nation claims jurisdiction over it, and its tax revenue is directed to the academy. 3 5 110 160
Huo Yuhao enrolled through Tang Ya’s Tang Sect recommendation, bypassing the standard entrance assessment. From the start, he treated Shrek as a place for early growth rather than an institution deserving unconditional loyalty. 3
Campus and Organization
Departments and Student Structure
- Martial Soul Department — Handles conventional Soul Master education, practical assessments, and combat-oriented cultivation. Yan Shaozhe serves as its dean. 107 110
- Soul Tool Department — Produces Soul Tools for sale to the three Douluo empires and provides a major source of academy income. Fan Yu was promoted to vice dean. 110 147
- Outer Academy — The primary student body. Its minimum graduation standard is Soul Ancestor level; students who cannot reach that level cannot advance to sixth grade. 106
- Inner Academy — A more selective division whose students are expected to perform Shrek Surveillance Group duties in addition to their studies. 138
- Sea God Pavilion — A senior academy body involved in major decisions, rewards, investigations, and Huo Yuhao’s eventual expulsion. 125 289 321
Facilities
- Beast Fighting Zone — Shrek’s largest dedicated facility, consisting of the Beast Circle for raising Soul Beasts and the Battle Arena for training and assessments. Its annual upkeep consumes roughly one-third of Shrek City’s tax revenue. 110
- The Battle Arena can hold approximately 10,000 spectators.
- Senior Martial Soul Department students earn practical-combat points there.
- The academy’s ability to raise Soul Beasts at this scale is described as exceptionally rare. 110
- Gathering Treasure Pavilion — Hosts Treasure Appraisal Meetings where merchants present rare materials, Soul Tools, Spirit Bones, and other valuables to Shrek students before public auction. 112 113
- Internal passages and formation blockade — Restricted routes connect the academy and Shrek City; ordinary students cannot freely use them. 9 108
- Protective Soul Tool formation — Activated during the Holy Spirit Church’s attack, though its defenses were described as scattered rather than systematically integrated. 305
Admissions and Education
| Category | Requirement or Privilege |
|---|---|
| Ordinary applicant | Requires a recommendation letter from at least a main city of one of the Three Great Empires and Soul Power above Rank 15. 3 |
| Tang Sect recommendation | Grants one annual exam-exempt enrollment slot due to the Tang Sect’s historical connection with Shrek. 107 |
| Special Enrollment Token | Issued to major allied forces or contributors; allows direct enrollment without the normal examination. 107 |
| Core Disciple treatment | Provides access to exclusive Treasure Appraisal Meetings and assessment-based credit privileges. 113 |
| Outer Academy graduation | Requires at least Soul Ancestor strength. 106 |
| Freshman assessment | Students must pass to become full academy members and remain enrolled through the first-year graduation examination. 38 |
Shrek emphasizes combat ability as its primary measure of a Soul Master’s strength, rather than Spirit Rings, Spirit Bones, or cultivation rank alone. Its teaching system is highly selective, with a consistently high elimination rate. 38 66
Inner Academy and Shrek Surveillance Group
Xuan Zi reveals that the Inner Academy is also the base of the Shrek Surveillance Group, an organization tasked with monitoring and eliminating Evil Soul Masters across the continent. Inner Academy disciples must complete thirty monitoring tasks before they may graduate. 138
The academy presents this work as a responsibility to protect continental peace and stability. However, Huo Yuhao views the compulsory task quota and loyalty-based training as a means of binding talented disciples to Shrek’s interests. 138
- Xuan Zi — Deputy leader of the Shrek Surveillance Group until Mu En removed him from the position after the tournament incident. 138 147
- Shrek Inspectors — Designated students such as Beibei and Xu Sanshi are expected to pass the Inner Academy assessment and serve for at least five years. 165
- Inner Academy casualties — Xuan Zi states that many Inner Academy students die during their missions, leaving fewer than one hundred disciples despite regular admissions. 138
Resources and Privileges
- Shrek receives Shrek City’s annual tax revenue, with the Beast Fighting Zone alone taking roughly one-third of it. 110
- The Soul Tool Department sells its creations to the Heavenly Soul, Dou Ling, and Star Luo empires, but not the Sun Moon Empire. 110
- The Gathering Treasure Pavilion uses Core Disciples’ personal data—including age, Soul Power, and identity—to determine credit limits and discounts. 113
- Huo Yuhao was granted an unlimited credit line, a 50% discount, and three free selections from the Treasure Appraisal Meeting each year. Wang Dong and Ning Tian recognized that such benefits could create enormous debt and bind a student to the academy. 114
- The academy provides exceptional students with special cultivation resources, including Spirit Bone rewards, assistance finding Spirit Rings, and Sea God Island training. 289
Shrek Seven Devils
Every five years, Shrek selects a new generation of Shrek Seven Devils to represent the academy in the All-Continent Advanced Soul Master Academy Soul Fighting Tournament. The title honors the first-generation Seven Devils, whose achievements established Shrek’s reputation. 133
Huo Yuhao’s reserve team was brought into the tournament after the regular team was severely injured during a clash with Evil Soul Masters. The reserve members were expected to compete against weaker opponents, gain experience, and conceal the regular team’s abilities. 135 145
Following their tournament victory, Huo Yuhao and his teammates received three Spirit Bones, support in acquiring Spirit Rings for their next two limit years, Sea God Island training, and the lifelong title of Shrek Seven Devils. 283 289
