Background / History

Li Gou'er was one of Zhao An's long-standing underlings during Zhao An's time as a Tiger Head Gang minor leader. Though he participated in the predecessor's extortion of commoners, the name above his head is gray rather than red, indicating poor character but not heinous wrongdoing 3. When Zhao An kills Python Gang minor leader Xu San, Li Gou'er is shocked less by the death itself than by the retaliation it may invite; he also senses that Zhao An has become frighteningly different after his recovery 2.

He accompanies Zhao An to the clinic, delivers the physicians, and protests when Zhao An orders the previously unpaid medical fees settled. Alongside Zhao Chunzi, he later guards Zhao An while he rests and maintains the household routines established under the former Zhao An, including preparing meat and liquor 3 4.

While collecting Bright Moon Clinic debts, Li Gou'er uses his Tiger Head Gang token and a short club to pressure debtors into paying. He openly despises Liu Tiesuo for selling his daughter to a brothel, though he initially argues against Zhao An killing him because the task was only debt collection 8.

Li Gou'er is wounded during Cao Li's ambush but chooses to stand with Zhao An rather than flee. Afterward, he becomes increasingly alarmed by the inevitable conflict with the Python Gang, yet pledges to follow Zhao An despite recognizing that he and Zhao Chunzi have little combat value 12 13. Personality

Li Gou'er is cautious, practical, and markedly more perceptive than Zhao Chunzi. He recognizes potential traps, worries about the strength of martial artists and gangs, and repeatedly urges Zhao An not to confront stronger enemies recklessly 7 11 18. He understands when a fight is beyond him; during He Song's assassination attempt, he stops Zhao Chunzi from rushing a Martial Master with a broom, recognizing that such interference would be useless 18.

Despite his fearfulness, he is loyal. He remains beside Zhao An during the Python Gang conflict, keeps Zhao Ke's inquiries about the Python Gang's wealth secret, and asks only that Zhao An not abandon him and Zhao Chunzi if they must flee the city 12 22 23.

He is talkative and fond of collecting rumors from caravans, taverns, and the streets, although he admits that his knowledge of larger political affairs is superficial 11. Wealth excites him greatly: after Zhao An's county-examination gifts arrive, he marvels at the silver and regards the Martial Examination as a path to riches 45.
