|---|---|---|
| First strand — Dispersed Breath | 10 | Zhao An opens his Sea of Qi at the lower dantian through the Fierce Tiger Blade Art’s breathing method, producing his first strand of Internal Breath. It can be circulated into a blade strike to shatter floor tiles. |
| 100 strands | 16 | Li Dazhuang’s seven years of blade cultivation raise Zhao An from one strand to one hundred. The Fierce Tiger Blade Art’s internal cultivation is transferred alongside its technique. |
| 120–130 strands | 22 | Results from four Soul Slave blade-practice sessions add roughly twenty to thirty strands. |
| 150 strands | 24 | Further Soul Slave cultivation raises Zhao An to 150 strands; the same chapter records another twenty-strand gain through Silver Snake Hand cultivation. |
| 200 strands | 29 | Internal Breath reaches a full 200 strands alongside Silver Snake Hand’s advancement to its second realm. |
| Over 60 new strands | 32 | Absorbing three Soul Slaves while consuming four Earth Origin Pills produces more than sixty new strands—far beyond Zhao An’s usual gain. |
| 400 strands | 34 | Nearly thirty years of accumulated Soul Slave cultivation and repeated absorption bring Zhao An to 400 strands. |
| Nearly 450 strands | 39 | Hard Bone Skill cultivation raises the total to nearly 450 strands. |
| 900 strands | 50 | Guo Fenglin’s thirty years of cultivation add nearly 100 strands, bringing Zhao An’s Internal Breath to 900 strands. |
| Nearly 1,000 strands | 64 | Zhao An gathers almost one thousand scattered strands for a breakthrough attempt. |
| Strong Breath Realm — one-inch “little snake” | 64 | The thousand strands fuse into one stable, complete strand stored in the Dantian Qi Sea. Zhao An enters the Strong Breath Realm. |
| Over one inch | 71 | Five Soul Slaves and medicinal supplementation increase the one-inch strand by roughly 30–40%. |
| About two inches | 72 | Further Soul Slave extractions expand the Internal Breath in Zhao An’s Qi Sea to approximately two inches. |
| Over ten inches — slender serpent | 77 | A nearly forty-year Soul Slave harvest combined with a special-grade Heaven Origin Pill expands Zhao An’s Internal Breath to more than ten inches, more than doubling its prior volume. |
Nature and Cultivation
Internal Breath is generated after a martial artist opens the Sea of Qi in the lower dantian. A practitioner circulates it through the meridians using a breathing method, then directs it into their body or martial techniques. Zhao An first produces it while repeatedly practicing the Fierce Tiger Blade Art and its auxiliary breathing rhythm. 10
The Life-Breathing Realm has three known stages:
| Stage | Description |
|---|---|
| Dispersed Breath | Also called False Breath. Internal Breath exists as many thin, scattered strands throughout the body; it can be gathered when needed, but is not yet refined or stable. 64 |
| Strong Breath | A thousand strands are fused into one complete, stable strand within the Dantian Qi Sea. Its manifestation resembles a coiled snake and does not dissipate when left unused. 64 |
| Intense Breath | The third stated stage of the Life-Breathing Realm; no further details are given. 64 |
For Zhao An, Soul Slave cultivation results provide an accelerated source of Internal Breath. The growth is supported by food, Red Blood Root decoction, and martial medicines; Earth Origin Pills notably improve the amount gained during extraction. 16 32
Properties
Martial Reinforcement
Internal Breath can be directed into a weapon, limb, or movement to strengthen force beyond ordinary physical ability.
- Zhao An’s first Internal Breath-infused blade strike shatters several floor tiles and spreads cracks across the ground. 10
- It reinforces stamina and sustained combat ability, allowing Martial Masters to maintain repeated attacks without quickly exhausting themselves. 19
- Zhao An uses it in his legs to leap more than a zhang and rapidly close distance in battle. 44
- At ten-plus inches of Strong Breath cultivation, a palm pressed against an iron post leaves a three-inch-deep indentation. 77
Technique Enhancement
The strength of perfected martial arts continues to depend on the depth of the user’s Internal Breath. Greater cultivation directly increases the power of the same technique. 71
- Blade arts — Internal Breath gives Zhao An’s Fierce Tiger Blade Art enough force to crack stone tiles and manifest a tiger-like blade momentum. 16
- Palm arts — Four hundred strands combined with perfected Silver Snake Hand allow Zhao An to break Tang Niu’s Hard Bone Technique with one palm. 35
- Finger arts — It can be concentrated into the fingertips to paralyze opponents, disrupt their meridians, or pierce targets with Bone-Piercing Finger. 39 50
- Archery — Zhao An uses Bone-Piercing Finger circulation to add kinetic force to arrows, enabling mile-range shots powerful enough to seal an enemy’s throat. 52
Strong Breath Manifestation
Once condensed, Internal Breath resides permanently in the Dantian Qi Sea as a snake-like strand rather than dispersing through the body.
- Zhao An’s initial Strong Breath manifestation is a one-inch-long “little snake.” 64
- It can be summoned through the meridians instantly to reinforce a strike. 64
- Continued cultivation enlarges it from a little snake into a thin snake, then a swimming snake, with a future flood-dragon form described as capable of overturning rivers and seas. 71
Limitations
- Physical capacity — A body cannot safely absorb unlimited cultivation results at once. Excess Internal Breath may be wasted if it cannot be absorbed in time. 34
- Nutritional demand — Soul Slave extraction triggers intense hunger and bodily transformation, requiring medicinal broth, meat, or pills to sustain the process. 10 16
- Slow late-stage growth — As cultivation deepens, ordinary Soul Slaves contribute increasingly little; a five-year Soul Slave may add only one or two wisps. 50
- Expenditure — Large-scale use still drains stamina and Internal Breath. Zhao An becomes exhausted after repeatedly firing Internal Breath-enhanced arrows and fighting continuously. 56
- Quality gap — Superior Internal Breath can overwhelm weaker cultivation outright. He Zhang’s condensed strand nullifies Zhao An’s dispersed Internal Breath during their clash. 55
- Recovery — Zhao An knows of internal arts that can accelerate recovery of Internal Breath, but does not possess one. 57
Known Practitioners
- Zhao An — Advances from a single strand of Dispersed Breath to a ten-inch-plus Strong Breath serpent through martial practice, Soul Slave extraction, and medicinal supplementation. 10 64 77
- Guo Fenglin — Possesses more than 500 strands of Internal Breath during his battle with Zhao An. 32
- He Zhang — Has already condensed a complete strand in his Dantian Qi Sea, placing him in the Strong Breath Realm. 55
- Tang Niu — Uses Internal Breath to activate the Hard Bone Technique, hardening his body and generating a rebounding force. 35
