Background / History

Early guidance of Chen Yuan and Xiao Xiao

Mu En initially appears to Shrek’s students as a wrinkled old man who spends his days reclining at the Outer Court dormitory entrance. After noticing the unusual fusion of Chen Yuan and Xiao Xiao’s soul power, he advises Chen Yuan to maintain the connection, allowing both children to benefit from it 16.

When Chen Yuan seeks his help, Mu En takes the pair to an isolated room and guides them through the process of sensing each other’s soul power and Martial Souls. His intervention allows them to awaken their Trinity Martial Soul Fusion Skill, which he identifies as an exceptionally rare three-Martial-Soul fusion comparable to that of the Golden Iron Triangle 22 23.

Mu En later detects the trace of Ultimate Fire produced during their fusion. Concluding that Chen Yuan’s Flame Gauntlet is evolving, he believes Chen Yuan can achieve Ultimate Fire by the seventh ring if he continues cultivating, fusing with Xiao Xiao, and obtains suitable Soul Rings and a Soul Bone 25.

Cultivating Shrek’s next generation

Seeing Chen Yuan’s talent, character, friendship with Bei Bei, and potential Ultimate Fire, Mu En considers him an ideal future successor to the Sea God Pavilion. He gives Chen Yuan his self-created Soul Skill, Reign Over the World, after asking him to defeat Bei Bei, thereby publicly associating Chen Yuan with himself and discouraging other Shrek figures from recruiting him first 25 26.

After Shrek wins the Continental Advanced Spirit Master Academy Soul Fighting Tournament, Mu En reveals to the Shrek Seven Devils that he is the Sea God Pavilion Master. He personally arranges cultivation within the Golden Tree for Bei Bei, Xu Sanshi, Huo Yuhao, Chen Yuan, and Xiao Xiao 105.

Mu En ultimately accepts that Chen Yuan will not fully bind himself to Shrek. In exchange for Chen Yuan’s promise not to oppose Shrek unless provoked, Mu En agrees to exempt him from joining the Shrek Inspectorate. He also asks Chen Yuan to kill Ye Xishui if he encounters her and possesses the strength to do so 105 106.

Leadership during Shrek’s crises

When Xuan Zi’s negligence severely injures members of Shrek’s main tournament team, Mu En harshly rebukes him for failing to control the side effects of his Godly Taotie Bull Martial Soul and remaining stalled at level 98. He orders Xuan Zi to protect the reserve team and presses Shrek to equip its Inspectorate members with flight and defensive Soul Tools 70.

Mu En supports greater engagement with Soul Tool development. He approves an exchange program with the Sun Moon Empire and orders that exchange students who meet Shrek’s standards be allowed into the Inner Court, rejecting Yan Shaozhe’s objections 104.

He also refuses to investigate the origin of Huo Yuhao’s second Martial Soul, maintaining that Huo Yuhao should be treated normally rather than pressured for Shrek’s benefit 106.

Final years

Mu En helps Tang Ya resist the darkness within her mutated Blue Silver Grass by placing a mark in her Sea of Consciousness. The mark protects her from dark impulses, but can also destroy her Sea of Consciousness should she become an Evil Soul Master 109.

When Du Busi attempts to take Chen Yuan as a disciple, Mu En publicly intervenes through the Sea God’s Light and warns the Body Sect leader against scheming against Shrek’s students 111.

After Ma Xiaotao’s evil fire is fully triggered, Mu En and Chen Yuan cooperate to purify her Martial Soul. Mu En uses the Bright Sacred Dragon’s light to immobilize the evil fire, while Chen Yuan’s sacred Yang Flame burns away its evil nature. The effort further strains Mu En’s already limited lifespan 130 131.

Before Chen Yuan leaves Shrek to travel the continent, Mu En sees him off from his wheelchair and admits that they may not meet again 136.

Mu En is an elderly man with a deeply aged, increasingly frail body. He usually presents himself as an inconspicuous old man resting outside the Outer Court dormitory, though his presence changes completely when he acts as Shrek’s master. 22 70

As Shrek’s leader, he is uncompromising when lives, responsibility, or the academy’s future are at stake. He openly rebukes Xuan Zi and Yan Shaozhe when he believes their failures endanger students or reflect selfishness rather than proper leadership 70 130 131.

He is also pragmatic. Mu En does not treat every dark-attribute Martial Soul as inherently evil, recognizing that a person’s actions—not merely their attribute—determine whether they become an Evil Soul Master 109.
