Background / History
Five thousand years before the events of the story, Havijordan suddenly appeared and devastated the world, destroying innumerable lives and civilizations. The Holy Light eventually halted the calamity, while Angrinonde drove Havijordan to the world's far end. Even in exile, the Abyss continued dispatching infectious minions into the Auling Labyrinth to undermine the Holy Light Pure Land. 93
Early encounters establish the Abyss as a corruptive force rather than merely a hostile faction. Animals exposed to Abyss Matter can mutate into powerful predators, while the matter can retain victims' faces and memories to attack survivors psychologically. The Abyss-tainted Alpha Ape's body manifests the faces of creatures it consumed and uses them for mental erosion. 13
The Abyss later becomes known to the Auling Hunters as the source of three native species—Abyss Walkers, Abyss Titans, and Abyss Mist Nests—as well as corruption capable of turning ordinary creatures and gifted power holders into its servants. 125
Jietisikoki and the Headmaster establish contact and cooperation with the Abyss, creating a “guiding signpost” intended to lead it through the Labyrinth. In return, they receive Seeds of the Abyss, transmission beacons, and bizarre infant organs. 700 701
The Headmaster subsequently explains that the native species are not an independent civilization: they are metabolic byproducts of Havijordan's body. The infant organs are Havijordan's actual organs and can summon Apostles. 702
During the war against the Holy Light Pure Land, the Abyss deploys native species, Mist Nests, and twenty-four Apostles across numerous settlements. Its forces conduct indiscriminate purges against both allies and enemies while the Apostles use individual calamity authorities and darkness domains. 1066
Nature and Manifestations
The Abyss has no stable, universally known form. Early Hunter records list Havijordan's form and information as unknown, while later revelations identify the Abyss itself as Havijordan's existence. The Headmaster speculates that Havijordan's true body may be infant-like and that its apparent phantom may have been an illusion. 125 702
Its physical manifestations include black oceans, sludge, fog, transformed hosts, living armies, and soul avatars. Abyss Matter can swallow terrain and light, while concentrated manifestations may form vast black seas or corruption-filled fog banks. 42 580 1255 1256
Abilities & Mechanisms
Corruption and Mental Erosion
Abyss Matter consumes or transforms living beings that come into contact with it.
- Most ordinary creatures are rapidly dissolved into black matter that exists as part of the Abyss collective and instinctively spreads contamination. 125
- Stronger-minded hosts may survive dissolution, mutate gradually, form Abyss Cores, and become puppets under the Abyss's command. 125
- Prolonged exposure can beguile Auling Power and Holy Light Power holders, allowing them to retain their original abilities while gaining regeneration and immortal traits. 125
- Abyss manifestations can invade the mind through voices, memories, hallucinations, and direct psychological pressure. 13 580
- Abyss Mist erodes and digests those trapped within it through highly concentrated Abyss Matter. 125 763
Regeneration and Immortality
Regeneration is among the Abyss's defining traits.
- Wounds on corrupted creatures can restore almost instantly as long as their Abyss Cores remain intact. 46 592
- Gifted beings beguiled by the Abyss gain regenerative and immortal properties in addition to their original powers. 125
- The Abyss consciousness can regenerate its body without relying on an Abyss Core, making ordinary destruction ineffective. 1009
- Apostle “Breath” replaces an Abyss Core with a darkness domain, reviving endlessly while its domain remains intact. 1016
- Abyssal power can be used to deny enemies death by granting them immortal bodies capable of perpetual suffering. 1157
Reproduction and Spread
The Abyss propagates through hosts, factors, and cores.
- Infected beasts are driven by endless hunger to feed and strengthen their Abyssal power. 279
- Once sufficiently developed, a host can become a spreader, producing mature Abyss Factors. 279
- These factors divide and implant themselves into killed creatures, nurturing new Abyss Cores and creating new Abyss creatures. 279
- Seeds of the Abyss can grant Abyssal power to recipients, as demonstrated when Mikun injects them into the Mad Clowns. 710
Adaptation and Evolution
The Abyss adapts rapidly to threats and can reshape bodies for combat.
- Its consciousness learns from failed possession attempts and develops resistance to opposing forces. 1007
- Its biological evolution can make an Abyssal host increasingly monstrous and powerful. 1156
- Apostle “Evolution” grows stronger during battle, develops forms suited to its opponent, copies Spirit Arts, and improves the purity of its imitations. 718
- The Abyss is characterized as turning disadvantages and hardships into further opportunities for growth. 1400
Possession and Consciousness
A distinct Abyss consciousness resides within Ye Chen and repeatedly attempts to seize his body.
- It lurks on the far side of Ye Chen's soul after its first failed attempt at possession. 1007
- It eventually takes control of Ye Chen's body, opposing Ye Chen's consciousness in a struggle between two souls. 1006 1007
- Ye Chen learns to separate his soul from his body, leaving an empty shell for the Abyss to destroy and preventing permanent possession. 1007
- Ye Chen later seizes authority over the Abyss's regenerative power, depriving the consciousness of its principal advantage. 1008 1009
- The consciousness seeks control of Ye Chen in order to summon Havijordan's true body and confront Jietisikoki. 1190
Large-Scale Cataclysm
The Abyss can reshape entire battlefields and Spirit Realms.
- It can manifest as a sky-covering black ocean capable of overwhelming localized defenses. 42
- Abyss Mist Nests blanket areas in corrosive haze, disrupt communication, and isolate survivors within shrinking safe zones. 764
- The Evil God Avatar casts Abyss Dust to fill a world with black particles, Abyss Sea to submerge it in a black ocean, and Abyss Sun to annihilate Kuize's Spirit Realm. 1256
- In the time tunnel, its power mutates stars into black orbs, screens into giant hands, and the void into corrosive fog-seas; each manifestation carries force comparable to an Abyss Sun. 1263
