Background / History
Ayanokouji enters Class D alongside Suzune Horikita and is initially noticed when he leaves during the class self-introductions. Tsukishima later identifies him as a student who maintains exactly 50 points in every subject, a pattern that attracts Sakayanagi Arisu’s attention. 1 14
He observes the confrontation between Horikita Manabu and Suzune, but initially declines Tsukishima’s urging to intervene, saying that he is not good at handling such situations. During Suzune’s later negotiation with Tsukishima, he quietly helps her regain her footing by clarifying that the terms can still be negotiated. 15 18
As Tsukishima begins influencing Class D through Hirata Yosuke, Ayanokouji recognizes the larger strategy: destroy the class’s false unity, give it a common enemy, then leave Hirata to reunite it. He remains wary of Tsukishima’s role and questions whether Hirata’s election plan truly originated with him. 36 38
Ayanokouji later accepts Tsukishima’s invitation to study painting. He evaluates Tsukishima’s work, teaches him about light sources, shadows, contrast, and facial structure, and becomes his “painting buddy” despite both claiming to have no interest in leading the class. 42 43
Appearance
Ayanokouji is introduced as a red-haired boy. He is repeatedly characterized by a blank, nearly expressionless face and an unusually quiet manner of moving and speaking. 1 24 41
- Often speaks in a flat, even monotone. 24 43
- Moves quietly enough to startle Tsukishima when approaching him. 24
- Maintains a deadpan expression even when provoked, teased, or inconvenienced. 15 43 46
Personality
Ayanokouji is detached, restrained, and difficult to read. He rarely reacts openly to Tsukishima’s provocations, including being drawn into pointless competitions, having his lunch eaten, and being served deliberately poor tea. 24 43 46
Despite his passive demeanor, he closely observes social situations and understands leverage. He recognizes Suzune’s lack of bargaining power during her negotiation with Tsukishima, sees through Tsukishima’s attempt to restructure Class D, and suspects that Tsukishima could use Kushida and Ichinose to influence others. 18 24 36
He shows a muted willingness to learn and adapt. After Tsukishima suggests that entertainment media may help him understand ordinary human reactions, Ayanokouji simply replies that he will try it. 46
Abilities & Skills
Academic Score Control
Ayanokouji deliberately receives exactly 50 points in every subject, concealing the extent of his academic ability behind an unnaturally precise average. 14
- His controlled grades are notable enough for Tsukishima to single him out during his discussion with Sakayanagi. 14
- His academic capability is implicitly recognized when other students consider asking him to tutor struggling classmates. 25
Observation and Social Analysis
Ayanokouji silently studies the people around him and identifies patterns in their behavior, plans, and vulnerabilities. 18 24 36
- Provides subtle guidance when Suzune loses control of negotiations with Tsukishima. 18
- Considers whether Tsukishima is using Kushida and Ichinose’s status as models to influence or control them. 24
- Correctly identifies the structure of Tsukishima’s attempt to fracture and reunify Class D through Hirata. 36
- Questions whether Hirata could have devised the class representative election format on his own. 38
Painting
Ayanokouji is an accomplished artist who can both create art and analyze technical weaknesses in another person’s work. 42 43
- Identifies problems with Tsukishima’s lighting, shadow placement, contrast, and facial proportions. 42
- Explains the effect of low evening light: soft illumination, low contrast, and softer shadows. 42
- Agrees to study painting with Tsukishima and provides a full morning of instruction. 42 43
Composure
Ayanokouji consistently remains calm under social pressure and petty harassment. 15 43 46
- Does not visibly react when Tsukishima refuses to help Horikita during the siblings’ confrontation. 15
- Endures Tsukishima abandoning him to Yamauchi and Ike, who proceed to eat his beef rice. 43
- Quietly prevents Tsukishima from taking the meat from his tray by shifting it away. 46
Relationships
- Yuto Tsukishima — Classmate, rival-like acquaintance, and painting partner. Ayanokouji probes Tsukishima’s motives while accepting his art lessons and later teaching him technical drawing fundamentals. 24 42 43
- Suzune Horikita — Classmate whose decisions he quietly influences. He assists her during negotiations, accompanies her in meetings with Tsukishima, and is repeatedly linked to her by other students. 18 41 46
- Kikyo Kushida — Classmate whose hidden nature Ayanokouji appears to know or suspect. Tsukishima warns Kushida that Ayanokouji may have seen through her facade. 42 43 44
- Sakayanagi Arisu — Ayanokouji is the student Sakayanagi is especially interested in, a fact Tsukishima deduces from her reactions. 14
- Sae Chabashira — Chabashira implies that Ayanokouji is important and appears to position him as a counterweight to Tsukishima’s influence. 41 44
- Yosuke Hirata — Ayanokouji observes Hirata’s growing leadership role and questions the origin of the plans Hirata carries out for Class D. 36 38
Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Class D Observation
Ayanokouji begins as an inconspicuous Class D student, though his exact score control and unusual connection to Horikita make him stand out to Tsukishima and Sakayanagi. 1 14
Horikita Negotiation Arc
He witnesses the tension between Suzune and Manabu, then later gives Suzune subtle assistance as she tries to bargain with Tsukishima for help protecting Class D from expulsions. 15 18
Tsukishima’s Class D Manipulation
Ayanokouji watches Tsukishima dismantle Class D’s superficial unity and recognizes that Hirata is being positioned to rebuild the class afterward. He remains skeptical of Tsukishima’s claim that he has no desire to control Class D. 36 38
Painting Lessons
After visiting Tsukishima’s room and critiquing his drawings, Ayanokouji agrees to paint with him. Their sessions reveal Ayanokouji’s technical expertise and give Tsukishima a reason to treat him as an ally rather than solely a target for mischief. 24 42 43
Midterm Information
Kushida reports that Ayanokouji has discovered information concerning the midterms and intends to distribute test papers before the exam. Tsukishima chooses not to involve himself in the matter. 49
