Background
In his previous life, Ifrit was Zhang Wei, an ordinary salaryman who died from overwork. Reborn as an abandoned infant, he was found in a trash can by Francis de Valier, a kind but impoverished hereditary Viscount. Francis named him “Ifrit,” meaning “infinite,” and gave him the full name Ifrit de la Valier in tribute to his family and his hopes for the child. Ifrit devoted himself to studying from an early age. 1
Although raised as a noble, Ifrit became a Fairy Tail mage and developed a reputation as an elusive tactician rather than a front-line fighter. He deliberately downplays his contributions, preferring his guildmates to receive public credit for victories. 107
At age eight, Ifrit encountered Miko, a shy Primeval Demon whose passive power initially attacked him. He survived long enough to speak with her and formed a contract: neither could abandon the other; Ifrit would hide Miko with his magic and take her to bid farewell to demons; Miko would not fight for him directly but could otherwise assist him. 100
Appearance
Ifrit is a well-proportioned young man with purple hair styled in a low ponytail. He typically presents himself as an elegant noble magician. 331
- Wears a black hat, black suit, and black magic cloak. 331
- Uses blue-rimmed, non-prescription glasses. 331
- Carries a gentleman’s cane or magic staff. 331
- Often wears a self-made mage cloak resistant to water, fire, lightning, and ordinary blades. 66
- Replaces his usual cloak with a white fur coat made by Mirajane in winter. 209
- In Scale Angel, his skin is covered in white scale powder, black tentacles grow from his head, and moth-like wings emerge from his back. 99
Personality
Ifrit is intelligent, calculating, and habitually mischievous. He enjoys deceiving opponents and companions alike, often using elaborate setups for entertainment or tactical advantage. Despite his polished gentlemanly manner, Lucy quickly recognizes him as maliciously teasing and highly rational. 4
He avoids unnecessary direct combat, dislikes sweating, and would rather fish, read, nap, or perform magic shows than receive fame for battle. His apparent laziness is genuine, but it also conceals caution: he believes prominent strength attracts enemies and prefers to operate from deeper shadows than his opponents. 99 107
Beneath his tricks, Ifrit is deeply protective of Fairy Tail. He refuses to let fear of Zeref stop him from protecting his companions, but he also avoids solving every problem for them, believing that each mage must choose their own path and become stronger through their own efforts. 147 161
He rejects the pursuit of immortality and godlike isolation. When offered the prospect of greater power at the cost of his humanity and connections, he chooses to remain with Fairy Tail. 151
Abilities & Skills
Deception Magic
Ifrit’s primary magic manipulates perception, hides his presence, misdirects enemies, and creates convincing false realities. It cannot physically interfere with objects by itself; physical actions attributed to his magic are often performed by concealed allies such as Miko. 100
- Creates large-scale illusions, including the apparent destruction of Fairy Tail’s guild hall. 2
- Conceals his location, uses substitutes and shadow clones, and infiltrates enemy territory. 54 98
- Influences emotions and can manipulate targets after infecting them with his magic. 107 171
- Uses “Magic Seeds” to establish influence over targets within range. 66
- Can create and destroy phenomena within a defined range, terrifying Rustyrose into fleeing. 166
- Cannot affect him once he leaves its effective range. 4
- Can be countered or hindered by specialized sensing, magnetic-field techniques, or sufficiently hostile environments; Ifrit continually adapts to such countermeasures. 66 98 143
Scale Angel
A complete linkage with Miko that shares their life and magic power. Miko covers Ifrit in scale powder, granting exceptional defense at the cost of causing her pain. 99 100
- Allows Ifrit to withstand the combined attacks of the Six Demon Generals without injury. 99
- Grants white scale armor and moth-like wings. 99
- Shares Miko’s defense and life force with Ifrit. 100

Ifrit researches demons and forms contracts that provide magic, allies, or specialized support.

Illusion Magic
Magic obtained through his contract with Kyōka Suigetsu. Ifrit primarily uses it for performances, infiltration, and misdirection. 205
- Performs shadow dances, disappearances, fire-control acts, and elaborate stage shows. 207

- Enables infiltration by distorting the surrounding space and concealing the group’s entry. 209

Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Fairy Tail Missions
Ifrit joins Fairy Tail’s early missions as a deceptive support mage. He protects Lucy during her first day at the guild, conceals the guild hall’s true condition during the brawl, and provides Natsu with a Fire Dragon card after watching him lose a fight on a moving train. 2 4 5
During the Eisenwald incident, he allows Natsu, Gray, and Erza to gain combat experience rather than ending the conflict himself. He secretly studies Lullaby after acquiring it. 6 7
Phantom Lord
After Phantom Lord injures Fairy Tail members, Ifrit abandons his usual detachment and heads to the enemy guild in anger. His protectiveness stems from his belief that ordinary training injuries are acceptable, but serious harm to his companions is not. 31
Oración Seis
Ifrit operates from the shadows against Oración Seis, infiltrating their plans and allowing the enemy to believe they have captured him. He enters Scale Angel and overwhelms the Six Demon Generals, but later arranges events so that Fairy Tail receives credit for the victory. 98 99 107
Edolas
In Edolas, Ifrit infiltrates the King’s council, uncovers the plan to turn Exceeds into Magic Crystals, and organizes a three-step counterplan. He rescues Natsu and Wendy, entrusts them to Maria, and helps repair his strained relationship with Laxus after Lisanna’s return. 127
Roa Organization
Ifrit infiltrates Roa’s organization to rescue Mirajane, confronts its captain-level monsters and clone-based forces, and challenges Roa’s pursuit of immortality. He ultimately rejects the path of transcendent power, choosing Fairy Tail and ordinary life with his companions instead. 143 151
Tenrou Island
When Zeref appears on Tenrou Island, Ifrit recommends ending the S-Class Trial and evacuating the guild. He remains behind nonetheless, declaring that he will not abandon his companions out of fear. 161
He aids Fairy Tail against Hades, manipulates Dark Mages into turning on their leader, and kills Hades after acknowledging his former greatness. When Acnologia arrives, Ifrit attempts to fight and harvest material for a new sword before escaping with the guild. 183 184
Eclipse Gate and God’s Curse
Future Rogue reveals that Ifrit’s god’s curse will lead to his death and a catastrophic future. Ifrit later returns cured with the aid of a future version of himself, leads the plan to destroy the Eclipse Gate, and uses Deception Magic to manipulate a disastrous timeline. 247 253 254
In one timeline, he reaches the divine realm to gain a physical body and break the curse threatening his past self, though he considers eternity a curse rather than a reward. 254
