"What a strong wind!"
Amid the swirling dust, their eyes were half-open. They seemed to see a strange-feathered, crippled white bird racing through the wind, its song clear and sweet.
When the wind died down and everyone opened their eyes, they saw someone standing in front of them.
He was an extremely handsome man, tall and broad-shouldered. Even standing there casually, he was a pleasure to look at.
His striking white hair framed skin so pale it seemed translucent. Ruby-red eyes made the loveliest accent against all that white.
Flying Bird A pressed two fingers together and made a stylish flick forward from his brow. "Yo~ Quite an entrance, huh? Did I dazzle you all?"
A breeze gently lifted his long white coat, making him look like a white bird about to take flight.
If there had been any girls around, they probably would have swooned over him. Unfortunately, everyone present was a man.
Kong Yubo and the others had nearly mistaken him for an enemy attack. Their hearts had almost leapt out of their chests, and their hands were already on their weapons.
Ji Wu and Xu Zhou were also startled by Flying Bird A's sudden appearance.
Bai Zuo didn't hold back his disgust. "Ugh! I was wondering where that foul bird smell was coming from. I could smell it from miles away."
Flying Bird A smiled brightly but gave as good as he got. "A spider that just spins webs and waits for prey to come to it has a sense of smell? That's truly astonishing."
"The stench of a bird can travel on the wind from any distance, can't it, little White Bird?" Bai Zuo spat venom, his expression frighteningly dark as thick malice swirled around him. He was enough to scare a grown man into tears.
Xu Zhou felt a chill run down his back. It was the first time he'd seen Bai Zuo wear such an openly hostile expression toward someone.
Usually, when Bai Zuo disliked someone, he would only mock them a few times before quietly leading them to their doom.
This was the first time he'd worn his emotions so plainly on his face!
Ji Wu was delighted to see Flying Bird A. He immediately said, "Mr. Flying Bird A, I didn't expect the organization to send you. Now we don't have to worry about the mission."
Ji Wu put an arm around Xu Zhou and pushed him in front of Flying Bird A. "Come on, Xu Zhou, say hello. This is your senior, Flying Bird A. He's a powerful S-rank Contract Anomalist."
Xu Zhou was a little nervous. "Hello, Senior Flying Bird A." That was a strange name! Was it a code name?
Flying Bird A didn't act like a senior at all. He laughed and ruffled Xu Zhou's hair, his smile dazzling. "So you're the new guy? How unfortunate that you got assigned to little Spider. He's still a child himself. How could he possibly look after a rookie?"
What a nice attitude! So friendly!
Xu Zhou thought to himself that Flying Bird A was a powerful S-rank Contract Anomalist. Was that why Brother Bai disliked him so much but couldn't do anything about it—because he couldn't beat him?
A scene involuntarily appeared in Xu Zhou's mind: a tiny white spider, not even as big as a palm, wearing an indignant, puffed-up expression as he hopped around, trying to fight a giant standing white bird.
Even when his leaps didn't reach as high as the bird's leg, and his blows couldn't even scratch it, he still refused to give up and tried to bite it.
Bai Zuo seemed to sense something and shot him a glance.
Xu Zhou immediately panicked and cleared the entire scene from his mind. No, he couldn't think of Brother Bai like that. Brother Bai was black all the way through, so black he smoked and oozed blackness. He held a grudge and always got even.
If he ever found out what Xu Zhou was thinking, Xu Zhou would be done for!
Ji Wu said, "This anomaly is a Malignant Curse with a Semi-Complete Ghost Domain. Sorry for the trouble, but could you force it out?"
Kong Yubo looked at the newly arrived Contract Anomalist. Another S-rank?
What exactly did S-rank mean? How strong were they?
How many more S-ranks were there in that organization?
Still, the appearance of this S-rank Contract Anomalist meant their crisis was over.
Kong Yubo could tell that the man called Flying Bird A seemed amiable on the surface, but was actually proud and conceited.
He could tell from the fact that Flying Bird A spoke only to the Contract Anomalists and hadn't even glanced at the rest of them.
Flying Bird A smiled. "Oh, little Spider. One Malignant Curse and you're already helpless? Hmm, how about this? If you bow your head and beg me quietly, I'll deal with this anomaly for you."
Bai Zuo's expression darkened. "Who would beg you? One day, I'll pluck every last one of those stinking feathers off you!"
Xu Zhou leaned over and quietly asked Ji Wu, "Supervisor Ji, do those two have a bad relationship?"
Ji Wu said, "Well, it can't be helped. Spiders and birds are natural predators."
Birds hunted spiders, and some spiders were even called bird-eating spiders.
The two of them kept trading barbs over there.
There wasn't the slightest trace of tension, even with an anomaly right in front of them.
Kong Yubo and the others watching were speechless. Their impression of Bai Zuo as pure evil and Flying Bird A as arrogantly conceited had completely vanished.
In their place were two childish elementary schoolers arguing with each other.
Ding! Flying Bird A's Character Perfection increased by 2%!
Perhaps it had noticed that everyone was ignoring it. Or perhaps Bai Zuo's relentless encroachment on its Ghost Domain and destruction of its rules had finally enraged it.
Yama, dressed in a black robe and wearing a huge sheep-bone Mask, made his entrance in a sedan chair, surrounded by a crowd of white-robed, Demon Mask-wearing evil spirits!
Xu Zhou said, "The anomaly's appeared!"
Kong Yubo and the others immediately went on alert.
Many floating lanterns drifted around the anomalies. Looking closer, those were no lanterns at all—they were glowing human heads.
Yama raised a hand.
The glowing heads floated over.
There were many people below the stage being controlled by Bai Zuo. After the heads floated over, their bodies began to change noticeably.
Their faces grew more wrinkled, their hair turned white, and their bodies became thinner as their flesh seemed to shrink away.
Under the light, some elderly people grew as thin as skeletons.
Kong Yubo's pupils contracted. "It's draining their life force!"
He raised his gun and fired at the glowing heads.
Every shot hit, but they remained completely unharmed.
His teammates also fired repeatedly, but their bullets could only use their momentum to force the heads back. They couldn't hurt them at all.
Bai Zuo furrowed his brow. Countless little spiders swarmed over. Each one was tiny, only about the size of a ping-pong ball, but they could leap astonishingly high.
They easily jumped several meters into the air, landed on the glowing heads, and began to gnaw at them with a crunching sound.
They spun out webs as they ate, wrapping the heads up.
Then the webs connected to the ground and dragged the heads down from the sky. Countless spiders swarmed over them, layering web upon web until they were quickly cocooned in white silk.
"Bai Zuo, make those people go inside the buildings. Don't let the anomaly hurt them." Seeing Bai Zuo's expression, Ji Wu immediately changed his mind. "At least get the elderly and children to hide!"
