Nature and Structure
- The Star Sea is a vast interplanar expanse containing innumerable planes; a single continent is only one of many within one world, while countless other planes exist beyond it. 68
- Its lowest-level planes are Seventh Rank. A faction needs at least a Seventh Rank Transcendent to possess the basic qualification to independently initiate a plane war. 329
- Planes are connected through universal Plane Portals and specialized portals constructed by powerful beings. 199
- A plane's transition or leap evolution expands its scale and can generate transcendent resources, but it also creates a vulnerable interval before its natives can match the plane's new rank. 385
- Plane barriers are both defensive boundaries and strategic obstacles: tearing one open can expose a plane to invasion, while leaking coordinates or military information can invite hostile forces. 397
Interplanar Travel and Warfare
- Star Sea warfare relies on methods such as Star Gates, Plane Portals, Mage Towers, War Demi-planes, alchemical shuttles, and warships. 355
- The Wrynn Family's first-generation Star Sea Shuttle was a one-way craft with limited capacity and poor life support, designed to send dormant War Goblin vanguards through the Star Sea as scouts and destabilizing forces. 397
- Star Sea conflicts commonly involve attacks during plane ascensions, blockades, landing operations, defensive block cities, and battles on both sides of a plane barrier. 350 413 496
- The Plane Graveyard was established as a space to temporarily contain planes eroded by the Bottomless Abyss; it became a major battlefield and settlement zone for both Star Sea gods and Abyssal Demon Gods. 491 528
History
Great Expansion and the Light Covenant
In the ancient Great Expansion, gods and the Ten Thousand Races of the Origin Plane spread civilization across the Star Sea, creating a prosperous era. That unity collapsed when the gods and races began fighting for their own interests. 199
After the Ragnarok and War of Ten Thousand Races pushed the Star Sea toward ruin, the Goddess of Light killed or sealed tyrannical gods and powerful beings, then established the Light Covenant to restrain those who accepted discipline. This created a comparatively peaceful age in which the Church of Light suppressed surviving evil. 463
Emergence of the Dark Side
The Goddess of Light's overwhelming dominance destabilized the balance between light and darkness. The sealed Dark Side of the Star Sea gradually corrupted into the Bottomless Abyss, which became the source of the Abyssal Demons. 463
The Star Sea Rules subsequently produced or encouraged destructive phenomena—including the Necrotic Realm, Fel Cataclysm, Nightmare Calamity, and Blood Moon Calamity—to correct the imbalance. 458
When the Goddess of Light entered slumber in the Bottomless Abyss, the dark side became stronger than the light side. The Star Sea Rules shifted toward supporting light, and the Nightmares and Nightmare Fiends later disappeared as the Moon Goddess and Goddess of Night began assimilating their remaining power. 464 465
Abyssal War and the Star Alliance
The Abyssal Demons' expansion united many Star Sea factions into the Star Alliance. The Wrynn Alliance's war in the Sam Plane became one of the coalition's defining victories, inflicting major losses on the Abyssal Demons and preventing them from treating the Star Sea as an uncontested hunting ground. 496 562
The Star Alliance later collapsed through internal competition over Origin Planes and godhood quotas. Its former members returned to small-scale warfare, opportunistic alliances, and conflict over territory. 523 562
After roughly fifty years of turmoil, the Star Sea settled into spheres of influence controlled by God Rank powerhouses. The Light Alliance withdrew from broader intervention, concentrating on protecting the Children of Light and planes that still welcomed the Church of Light. 524
Later Reordering
The birth of Khorne, Tzeentch, and Nurgle introduced new Sources of Evil into the Star Sea. Their rise was enabled in part by Star Sea and Abyssal factions that viewed them as useful restraints on the growing Light Alliance. 539 540
Following the return of Athena as the Light-Dark Sovereign, the Primal Abyss was assigned to the Seven Deadly Sins, while the Star Sea Plane was placed under the Seven Virtues. The 108 Purgatory Worlds were divided equally between Abyssal Demons and Light Spirits. 624
Star Sea Rules
- The Star Sea Rules are an impersonal regulatory force whose central principle is maintaining a balance between light and darkness. 539 591
- They do not act from morality or loyalty; forces created to restore balance can be abandoned once they no longer serve that function. 569 591
- The Rules regard an unchecked Light Alliance as a danger because the previous rise of the Goddess of Light produced an existence beyond ordinary cosmic control. 539
- They favor the simultaneous rise of paired light and dark God Kings rather than a single unopposed God King. 604 609
| Imbalance or development | Response of the Star Sea Rules | Result |
|---|---|---|
| The Goddess of Light's absolute dominance | Strengthened the Dark Side of the Star Sea | The sealed darkness gradually developed into the Bottomless Abyss. 463 |
| Light–dark imbalance during the Covenant era | Produced major counterweights | The Necrotic Realm, Fel Cataclysm, Nightmare Calamity, and Blood Moon Calamity emerged. 458 |
| Darkness becoming stronger after the Goddess of Light's slumber | Tilted toward the light side | Nightmare-related erosion ended, and Nightmares disappeared from their prior role. 465 |
| Rapid growth of the Light Alliance and its Origin Planes | Fostered new Sources of Evil | Khorne, Tzeentch, and Nurgle arose as balancing forces. 539 561 |
| Restoration of light–dark balance through the Seven Virtues and Seven Deadly Sins | Withdrew support from older balancing tools | The Three Sources of Evil lost their purpose and became expendable. 569 |
Major Powers
| Power | Role in the Star Sea |
|---|---|
| Light Alliance | The principal light-aligned bloc. It protects its own planes and allies, but largely ceased intervening in the affairs of factions that rejected its order. 523 524 |
| Star Alliance | A coalition formed to resist the Abyssal Demons; it achieved major successes before fracturing over internal interests and Origin Plane disputes. 496 523 |
| Abyssal Demons | Invaders from the Bottomless Abyss who conduct plane landings, corruption campaigns, soul harvesting, and raids through Abyss Gates. 478 493 |
| Gods of the Star Sea / All Spirits | Numerous native divine factions whose conflicts over territory, vassal races, and godhood quotas contributed to the Star Alliance's collapse. 524 562 |
| Purgatory Demon Gods | Dark-side powers that compete and cooperate with Star Sea gods, often seeking territory and resources in the Purgatory Worlds and newly ascended planes. 590 603 |
| Wrynn Alliance | A Light Alliance-aligned force led by Medivh and allied with the Spore Jungle. Its fortified planes, Bone Spirits, and rapid development made it a major power in Star Sea warfare. 496 524 596 |
Notable Features
- The Star Sea's native factions often regard newly ascended Origin Planes as prizes to be seized before local defenders can consolidate their strength. 385 538
- God Rank combatants generally avoid mutually destructive battles, instead assigning Legendary Transcendents to seize resources and territory on their behalf. 528
- The Elemental Realm is foundational to the Star Sea's cosmic order; its energy sustains the Star Sea Plane, and powers that covet it generally meet disastrous ends. 589
- The Star Sea later began expanding beyond its conventional limits through Luna's creation of Spore Planets in the Extra-territorial Void, a project supported by the Star Sea Rules as a means of pushing the universe beyond its established boundaries. 641
