After leaving the morgue, he stepped onto the bare stone tiles. As he passed the Northern Office jail, he happened to run into Zheng Shangming.
Or rather, Zheng Shangming had timed it so he would be waiting there.
"Have you finished examining the body?" Zheng Shangming asked.
At the same time, his voice sounded in Jiang Wang's ear: "Brother Jiang, you should decide on the matter of the Commander of the Northern Office as soon as possible."
Jiang Wang's thoughts stirred.
He understood that Zheng Shangming had probably gotten hold of some clues.
The matter of the Commander of the Northern Office was, of course, not something they could discuss openly. And after witnessing the strange behavior of the Green Badge constable in the morgue, Jiang Wang no longer had much faith in the Northern Office's security.
Aloud, he said, "I've examined it. There's nothing wrong with the body."
He replied telepathically, "I understand."
Zheng Shangming nodded. "Then take care, Brother Jiang. I'll come to your residence tomorrow to pick you up."
Jiang Wang declined. "There's no need to go to so much trouble. I'll meet you outside Changsheng Palace tomorrow morning."
At the same time, he sent a telepathic message: "Look into the constable who just accompanied me into the morgue. There's something wrong with him. Also, check Feng Gu's body. I suspect he tampered with it just now."
Zheng Shangming smiled. "It's not a matter of whether it's troublesome. It's the rules of an investigation. When we go out, we have to take a Northern Office carriage. We can't come into contact with anything else."
In his telepathic reply, he said, "Don't worry. If there's something wrong with this man, he won't be able to hide it. Tonight, I'll find a new lead and examine the body again.
