Background / History

Family and the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well

Dugu Bo killed countless people in his youth and accumulated numerous enemies. By his old age, Dugu Yan was his only remaining family member. He had watched relatives die young from the side effects of their serpent Martial Souls and feared that his granddaughter would follow her father’s fate 28 101 103.

Years earlier, he discovered the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well in Sunset Forest and claimed its surrounding herb garden by enclosing it within a Poison Array. The site suppressed his own poisoning and kept him alive, but he did not understand the full medicinal potential of its immortal herbs 30 84 99.

Dugu Yan’s Abduction

Jiang Ming abducted Dugu Yan while impersonating Ma Hongjun, deliberately directing Dugu Bo’s anger toward Shrek Academy. The scheme served two purposes: using Dugu Bo to attack Jiang Ming’s enemies and removing him from Sunset Forest long enough to harvest his herbs 25 27 28.

At Shrek Academy, Dugu Bo killed Li Yusong, crushed Zhao Wuji’s right arm, and injured Flender. He initially demanded Ma Hongjun’s surrender within ten seconds, threatening another death for every second of delay. After recognizing that the real Ma Hongjun was too weak to have committed the abduction and had a credible alibi, he realized someone had used him against the academy 31 32.

That discovery did not end his retaliation. He struck Qin Ming, killed another instructor, and threatened to kill one academy member each day until they identified the abductor. Yu Tianheng persuaded him to prioritize finding Dugu Yan rather than killing everyone present 33.

Dugu Bo returned immediately when he learned that Xue Qinghe and Ge Long had rescued his granddaughter. He thanked Xue Qinghe with a deep bow and promised to remember the favor. His relationship with the crown prince subsequently became warmer, while his limited friendship with Prince Xue Xing cooled 37 38 57.

Treatment and Alliance with Jiang Ming

Dugu Yan later identified Jiang Ming as her abductor and relayed his offer to treat Dugu Bo’s poisoning in exchange for help locating a roughly fifty-thousand-year space-type Soul Beast. Dugu Bo initially doubted both Jiang Ming’s strength and his medical claims, but agreed to meet him after Dugu Yan confronted him about his deteriorating health 65 83 84 85.

Jiang Ming proposed storing accumulated toxins in ten-thousand-year Soul Bones and using Martial Soul evolution to cure Dugu Yan. Although furious to discover that Jiang Ming had taken and replanted his herbs using water from his spring, Dugu Bo agreed to overlook the theft if his granddaughter could be cured 98.

Dugu Yan’s consumption of Jade Dragon Serpent Fruit transformed her venom into a controllable power that no longer harmed her. Dugu Bo’s relief outweighed his resentment over the stolen garden. When her evolved Martial Soul left him unable to determine a suitable fourth Soul Ring, he sought Jiang Ming’s advice 100 101 103.

Concerned that his eventual death would leave Dugu Yan without protection, Dugu Bo arranged for her to acknowledge Jiang Ming as her uncle. This was a deliberately constructed family relationship, not a biological connection 107 108.

Star Dou Great Forest Expedition

During the journey to obtain Dugu Yan’s fourth Soul Ring, Dugu Bo intervened when the Shrek students attacked her. He suppressed them with his aura and dismissed Dai Mubai’s royal background as insufficient protection against a Titled Douluo 106 107.

He then punished Ma Hongjun by presenting castration as a permanent “solution” to his Evil Fire problem. His icy poison attack carried out the punishment, leaving Ma Hongjun unconscious 108 109.

In the forest, Dugu Bo intimidated Meng Shu and Chao Tianxiang while Dugu Yan claimed a Man Faced Demon Spider. He also baited the couple into underestimating Jiang Ming, then openly laughed after Jiang Ming defeated their combined attack. He later escorted Dugu Yan back to Heaven Dou City so she could finish integrating her newly acquired External Soul Bone 114 115 117 119.

Flame Radiance Academy and the Void Walker Hunt

Dugu Bo became vice dean of Flame Radiance Academy and brought Dugu Yan and Ye Lingling away from Heaven Dou Royal Academy after they left its team. He also supplied Jiang Ming with intelligence about a powerful Void Walker in the Void-Breaking Mountain Range 126 128.

During the hunt, Jiang Ming teleported him past the Four Great Clans’ blockade. Dugu Bo petrified Bai Yu with Medusa’s Gaze, then helped secure the dying Void Walker. He established decoy Poison Arrays to delay pursuit and guarded Jiang Ming during Soul Ring absorption 129 130 131.

Yang Wudi, Tai Tan, and Niu Gao eventually attacked him together. The strain of creating five formations and fighting while protecting Jiang Ming triggered a venom outbreak, allowing the three Soul Douluos to inflict near-fatal injuries. Jiang Ming completed his absorption and saved him before Yang Wudi could deliver the killing blow 133 134.

After recovering, Dugu Bo entertained academy students with embellished accounts of the battle. Dugu Yan, Ye Lingling, and the students reminded him that he had returned badly injured 138 139.

Retaliation and the Spirit City Ruse

Dugu Bo later accompanied Jiang Ming into Star Luo territory. He dissolved the Defense Clan’s Niu Ma with poison after the man threatened him and the Xu family, then helped confront the surviving affiliated clans. During that confrontation, he blocked Bai He from interfering with Jiang Ming’s battle 201 202 203.

The subsequent inventory of the three clans yielded two Soul Bones, each more than twenty thousand years old. By the time Jiang Ming prepared to leave for Spirit City, Dugu Bo reported that the toxin-storage method had substantially improved his condition, although decades of accumulated poison remained 220.

At Spirit City, he staged a betrayal, claiming that he wanted revenge for the stolen herb garden and Dugu Yan’s imprisonment. His poisonous barrier enclosed Jiang Ming and seven hostile Titled Douluos. The betrayal was an act: Dugu Bo had already entrusted his poison core to Jiang Ming before the trip, and Jiang Ming later returned it 238 240.

Heaven Dou Palace Conflict and Clan Destruction

After Jiang Ming’s return, Dugu Bo and Dugu Yan reunited with him and went to the imperial palace. Dugu Bo fought the Clear Sky Sect’s Fourth Elder, exploiting distractions to land his ninth Soul Skill before Jiang Ming killed the weakened elder 251 255.

When Yu Tianheng attempted to take Dugu Yan hostage, Dugu Bo restrained him with Titled Douluo pressure. Jiang Ming killed Yu Tianheng, and Dugu Bo vowed to destroy the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan in retaliation 256.

He subsequently learned that Xue Qinghe was Qian Renxue and accepted her faction’s alliance. He also accepted her proposal to make Dugu Yan empress after ascending the throne, treating the arrangement as a political necessity 256 257.

Alongside Snake Lance Douluo and Puffer Douluo, Dugu Bo helped execute Heaven Dou Royal Academy’s three education committee members. He then sealed the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s mountain with poison while Imperial Guards blocked its escape routes. His contracting mist killed or weakened defenders for the allied forces to finish, and he ordered a final search for survivors and valuables 258 259 260.

Appearance

  • Hair: Long dark-green hair reaching his waist; later described as blackish green, with gray streaks in subsequent appearances 28 97 202.
  • Eyes: Emerald-green, snake-like pupils 28 32.
  • Face: Aged and sharply featured 28.
  • Clothing: Green robes or plain gray cloth robes 30 106 201 258.
  • Presence: His arrival can seem to lower the surrounding temperature, while green mist corrodes nearby furnishings and vegetation 28 97 106.

Personality

Dugu Bo is fiercely devoted to Dugu Yan. Her safety takes precedence over his pride, possessions, and grudges: he accepts Jiang Ming’s terms despite the kidnapping and herb theft because Jiang Ming can save her. His tenderness toward her contrasts sharply with his treatment of outsiders 37 84 98 101.

He is proud, intimidating, and frequently cruel. Threats against his granddaughter can provoke indiscriminate killing intent, and he does not consider political status or powerful backing sufficient grounds for mercy. Even after discovering that Shrek Academy was framed, he continued to punish its members for creating the circumstances that endangered Dugu Yan 32 33 107 256.

He also enjoys schemes, mockery, and boasting. His partnership with Jiang Ming develops into familiar banter and coordinated deception, while his accounts of his own battles minimize his injuries. Despite this arrogance, he recognizes genuine debts and bows to Xue Qinghe for rescuing Dugu Yan 38 117 130 139 220.

His pragmatism extends to collecting valuables from defeated enemies. Calling himself “thrifty” and “diligent,” he advises Jiang Ming not to overlook corpse looting and later orders the clan battlefield searched for every gold coin 191 260.

Poisoning and Treatment

Condition or Measure Details
Underlying cause His Beast Martial Soul acts on his body, leaving venom fused with his Soul Power and increasingly difficult to contain as he cultivates 84 98.
Early suppression The Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well delays the toxicity but cannot cure it 84.
Life expectancy He initially admits to having at most five years left, then later tells Jiang Ming he may have roughly another ten years. Neither estimate establishes a permanent cure 84 107.
Healing limitation Even Ye Lingling’s grandfather’s Nine Heart Begonia treats the symptoms rather than the Martial Soul’s underlying problem 84.
Proposed treatment Store venom in sufficiently old Soul Bones. Their finite capacity makes this a life-extending measure rather than a complete cure 98.
Skull Bone risk He refuses to store toxins in his skull because a leak could drive him mad 133.
Severe relapse Five Poison Arrays and prolonged combat trigger an outbreak during the Void Walker hunt, leaving him vulnerable to near-fatal injuries 133.
Later improvement After two suitable Soul Bones are recovered from the affiliated clans, he confirms that Jiang Ming’s method has improved his health considerably; accumulated poison still requires time to clear 220.
