Background

The Xiongnu are organized as a loose confederation rather than a centralized state. Individual tribes settle wherever pasture and water are available, retain substantial autonomy, and are expected to provide livestock tribute and military support to the Chanyu or their Worthy King. A tribe that earns sufficient merit or offers enough tribute may gain direct backing from the Chanyu Court and escape a Worthy King's control. 472

The Chanyu Court is the confederation's supreme ruling center, guarded by elite cavalry and centered around the Great Chanyu's grand tent in the Northern Desert. Under the Chanyu are Worthy Kings, Guli Kings, tribal kings, generals, and chieftains who command their own forces while pursuing their own territorial interests. 492

Following Donghu's collapse, the Xiongnu view its rich pasturelands as an opportunity to expand their population, cavalry strength, and influence. Great Chanyu Luandi Touman considers using Hunxie, Xubu, and White Sheep forces to seize Donghu while also limiting the influence of rival factions within the confederation. 475

Military Appearance

Xiongnu troops are primarily mounted warriors equipped for steppe warfare, though their equipment varies between tribes, elite formations, and specialist units. 447 520

  • Heavy leather armor and wolf-fang-set curved sabers were worn by Xiutu Tribe cavalry. 447
  • Horn bows were standard equipment among patrols and mounted warriors. 494
  • Elite troops could carry bronze ring-pommel sabers, leather armor, arrows, and dried provisions. 520
  • Luandi Motu's personal guard cavalry wore black armor and rode black horses. 531
  • Dragon Vein Army soldiers were distinguished by golden eyes, while their horses had red eyes after empowerment. 596

Organization

  • Great Chanyu — Luandi Touman rules from the Chanyu Court and directs confederation-wide mobilization, reconnaissance, diplomacy, and war policy. 492 494 548
  • Worthy Kings and Guli Kings — Powerful regional leaders who command tribes and participate in court deliberations; their competing interests shape Xiongnu policy. 475 492
  • Tribal forces — Major documented tribes include the Xiutu, Hunxie, Xubu, White Sheep, Gaolin, Jizhou, and Xubu remnants. 447 470 487 498 494
  • Black-Armored Guard — Luandi Motu's personal guard cavalry and one of the Xiongnu army's elite formations. 531
  • Eagle Scout Camp — An elite reconnaissance force led by Luan Di Hulü, noted for its observation and tracking capabilities. 466 467
  • Esoteric Shaman Warriors — Shamanic specialists marked with totems and deployed alongside conventional elites. 520
  • Dragon Vein Army — Fifty thousand warriors empowered through the Azure Wolf Seal and shamanic possession. 594 596

Abilities & Skills

Cavalry Warfare

The Xiongnu's military strength is founded on fast-moving cavalry, mass charges, mounted encirclement, and the ability to exploit open grassland terrain. 479 494

  • Cavalry formations use long sabers, battle axes, and horses' momentum to break enemy lines. 479
  • Riders recognize the danger posed by trenches and chevaux-de-frise, using axes and planks to dismantle or cross defensive works instead of charging blindly. 479
  • Tribal forces rely on local knowledge of water, pasture, hidden routes, and difficult terrain to wear down invading armies. 494
  • Large formations can mobilize rapidly under the Royal Court, including Luandi Motu's army of 200,000 cavalry. 532

Mounted Archery

Xiongnu mounted archers are raised in horseback riding, hunting, and bow use from childhood. Huyantuo's forty thousand archers are described as the strongest mounted-archery force in the Xiongnu. 542

  • Mounted archers conduct ranged harassment while maneuvering around enemy formations. 509 542
  • Ambushers target exposed legs and feet when enemy armor cannot be penetrated directly. 509
  • Their bows and arrows are ineffective against the Blood-Clad Army's heavy armor, while the Blood-Clad Army's heavier arrows outrange and overpower them. 542

Reconnaissance and Infiltration

The Xiongnu maintain sophisticated scouting networks, including disguised infiltration teams and the Eagle Scout Camp. 467 491

  • Scouts can disguise themselves as Donghu herders by changing clothing, carrying shepherds' whips, driving livestock, and imitating local speech and behavior. 491
  • Reconnaissance units divide into separate groups to trace survivors, gather rumors, and observe Qin strongholds. 491
  • Eagle Scout Camp members track wheel ruts, footprints, broken weapons, and other battlefield traces to reconstruct enemy movements. 466 467

Shamanic Warfare

Xiongnu forces employ mist, poison, shamanic rituals, and spirit-based empowerment in battle. 521 537 594

  • Shamanic mist is used to obscure vision, lure enemies, and conceal ambush positions. 521
  • An old shaman halts Qin artillery shells in midair and attempts to turn lightning against the Qin Army. 537 538
  • The Azure Wolf Seal can draw on grassland dragon veins and shamanic spirits to possess Xiongnu warriors. 594
  • Dragon Vein possession grants extraordinary physical strength and resistance to conventional blades and artillery. 594 596
  • The possession has a limited duration and can damage the foundations of the warriors' bodies if maintained too long. 594

Equipment

  • Curved sabers, including wolf-fang-set and bronze ring-pommel variants. 447 520
  • Heavy or tanned leather armor. 447 520
  • Horn bows, arrows, and leather arrow pouches. 494 520
  • Long-handled battle axes for dismantling anti-cavalry defenses. 479
  • Fast warhorses suited to grassland movement and mounted combat. 479 494
  • Shamanic smoke, poisons, and ritual support for specialist formations. 521

Weaknesses

  • Ordinary sabers, arrows, and leather armor prove inadequate against the Blood-Clad Army's heavy armor, sharp weapons, and superior archery. 439 451 542
  • Their decentralized structure leaves tribal leaders vulnerable to conflicting ambitions, greed for merit, and unreliable intelligence. 472 474 514
  • Loss of a commanding leader can rapidly collapse battlefield coordination and morale, as seen after King Hunxie's death at Deer Terrace Dome Tent. 482
  • Dense cavalry formations are highly vulnerable to Qin artillery and prepared kill zones. 534 535
  • Shamanic intervention can backfire; after the old shaman's death, his uncontrolled lightning strikes Xiongnu troops indiscriminately. 541

Relationships

  • Luandi Touman — Great Chanyu and supreme ruler of the Xiongnu; he oversees the Donghu campaign, later considers negotiation with Qin, and eventually commits the Royal Court to renewed war. 492 548 594
  • King Hunxie — A powerful tribal ruler under the Right Worthy King who commands 70,000 elite cavalry and seeks Xiutu lands and trade routes; he is killed in the explosion at Deer Terrace Dome Tent. 470 482
  • Xiutu Tribe — A major Xiongnu tribe under the Right Worthy King, fielding a 100,000-strong force before being destroyed by the Blood-Clad Army. 447 457
  • Xubu Tribe — A participating tribe in the Donghu campaign; its forces suffer destruction at Black Wind Valley and later remnants are targeted during Qin's advance through Xiongnu territory. 484 494
  • White Sheep Tribe — Initially part of the planned Donghu operation, but withdraws from Donghu after learning of the Hunxie and Xubu disasters. 475 487
  • Azure Wolf True Person and the Sacred Palace — Cultivator allies who provide the means to create the Dragon Vein Army. 594
  • Qin Army and Blood-Clad Army — Principal military opponents responsible for the destruction of multiple Xiongnu tribal forces and the defeat of Luandi Motu's 200,000-strong army. 491 546

Story Role / Major Arcs

Sand Fox Post and the Xiutu Campaign

A Xiongnu force of roughly 30,000 cavalry attacks Sand Fox Post after Donghu's garrison is destroyed. Du Ren's Blood-Clad Army counters with a concealed flanking attack through a dry trench, killing more than 18,000 Xiongnu and capturing more than 5,000. 439

Luandi Guduhou subsequently gathers 80,000 troops for an all-out assault on Sand Fox Post, seeking revenge and the Blood-Clad Army's superior armor and weapons. 449 451 The Xiutu Tribe's subsequent intervention ends with the Blood-Clad Army wiping out the tribe and seizing its reserves. 457

Donghu Expansion Attempt

Xiongnu scouts interrogate a Qin captive about Donghu and the Xiutu Tribe. Under torture, the prisoner fabricates a story that Yan, Donghu, and Xiutu destroyed one another, leading King Hunxie to request authority to occupy Donghu. 474

King Hunxie attacks White Deer Horse Ranch with an army described as 170,000 strong. Qin Yue's smaller Qin-Yan force uses trenches, chevaux-de-frise, concealed crossbows, traps, and a staged retreat to lure the Xiongnu into Deer Terrace Dome Tent. 479 480

Hunxie and his senior officers are killed when the dome tent explodes. The loss of command throws the Xiongnu into panic, allowing Meng Wu's Qin forces to rout and slaughter the disorganized army. 481 482 Xubu forces are later devastated in Black Wind Valley by a Qin cannon ambush. 484

Reconnaissance and Mobilization

The Chanyu dispatches 30,000 elite scouts disguised as Donghu herders to verify reports that the Hunxie and Xubu armies were annihilated. Their investigation finds no survivors from the combined 120,000-man force and mistakes Qin gunpowder weapons for heavenly thunder. 491

After witnessing Qin forces mobilizing toward the northern border, the Xiongnu Royal Court orders all tribes to assemble at the Donghu frontier. 492 494

Qin Incursion into Xiongnu Territory

Meng Tian leads 30,000 Blood-Clad Army soldiers through Canhe Slope and into Xiongnu territory under a plan to sever the Xiongnu army's retreat route. 494 Along the way, the Blood-Clad Army destroys Xubu remnants, Gaolin elites, and multiple ambush forces through superior archery, discipline, infiltration, and counter-ambush tactics. 495 496 505 518

Battle of the 200,000-Man Army

Luandi Motu leads 200,000 Xiongnu cavalry against a Qin defensive line designed to funnel mounted forces into artillery kill zones. 532 533 Qin cannons devastate the packed vanguard and flanking formations, killing Agudamu and forcing Huyantuo's wing into retreat. 534 535

An old shaman temporarily saves Xiongnu troops by stopping artillery shells and attempting to destroy Qin weapons with lightning. His death causes the summoned lightning to strike Xiongnu forces instead. 537 538 541

The Blood-Clad Army arrives from the Xiongnu interior, having cut through several tribes and severed the retreat route. It intercepts Motu's remnants, destroys Huyantuo's mounted archers, and helps complete the encirclement of the surviving army. 541 542 543 Motu is ultimately killed by Blood-Clad Army centurion Iron Edge, while remaining Xiongnu soldiers are captured. 546

Negotiation and Dragon Vein Rearmament

After the defeat, envoy Yitu meets Meng Wu to discuss Qin's terms. Qin offers the Xiongnu Royal Court vassalage or removal if it refuses to submit, while granting one month for a response. 551

Rather than accept submission, Touman receives Azure Wolf True Person and the Sacred Palace. With their aid, the Royal Court prepares a final battle using the fifty-thousand-strong Dragon Vein Army, whose empowered warriors survive Blood-Clad Army rocket fire. 594 596
