Background / History
Family Curse and Medicinal Garden
Dugu Bo’s poisonous Martial Soul also poisons his own body. He relies on the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well to suppress its effects and maintains a medicinal garden there behind a powerful poison barrier. Despite guarding its rare plants for years, he initially cannot identify ninety percent of them or properly exploit their medicinal value 53 54.
The same condition threatens his descendants. Dugu Yan eventually learns the truth about the family curse and her father’s death. Dugu Bo refuses to abandon his poison cultivation, but reassures her that he expects to live long enough to see her marry and have children 60.
Capturing Lu Fan
After secretly observing Lu Fan’s closeness with Dugu Yan, Dugu Bo identifies him as Yue Guan’s disciple. He suspects his old enemy has sent Lu Fan to lure away his granddaughter and decides to abduct him when she is absent 51 52.
Dugu Bo brings Lu Fan to his medicinal garden, threatens him, and injects a nonlethal poison into his body. Lu Fan prevents an immediate execution by accurately describing Dugu Bo’s poisoning symptoms and offering treatment for both him and Dugu Yan 53.
Their negotiation ends with Dugu Bo promising his herb garden and ten years of protection in exchange for effective treatment. Lu Fan’s contingency letters—and the danger that retaliation would pose to Dugu Yan—help force the agreement. Dugu Bo rejects complete detoxification at the cost of his poison arts and accepts the alternative of transferring Martial Soul poison into a Spirit Bone 54.
From Guardian to Ally
Dugu Bo begins trusting Lu Fan after testing his treatment theory, although he still places a jade-green bead inside him as a restraint. When Lu Fan enters the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well for body tempering, Dugu Bo initially assumes he has died and fears losing the knowledge needed to cure his granddaughter 55 56.
Lu Fan’s disappearance brings Yue Guan and Gui Mei to Sunset Forest. Unable to defeat them together, Dugu Bo invokes the Poison Core inside Lu Fan to stop their attack, then allows them to take Dugu Yan as security while entering the poison barrier 58.
After finding Lu Fan alive, Dugu Bo cooperates with Dugu Yan’s treatment: he prepares medicinal herbs, obtains ten-thousand-year Whale Rubber, and takes her to hunt her fourth Spirit Ring. Her detoxification and developing dragon-type Martial Soul greatly relieve him 60 64 68 69 70.
Spirit Hall Service
Dugu Bo initially insists that protecting Lu Fan does not mean joining Spirit Hall. He distrusts the organization and refuses Lu Fan’s proposed alliance against its existing leadership, judging its strength too overwhelming 61.
He nevertheless fights beside Yue Guan and Gui Mei against Tang Hao, and poisons Tang Yuehua unconscious to prevent news from reaching the Clear Sky Sect. His contribution earns him a share in the planned distribution of Tang Hao’s Spirit Bones 84 88 91 92.
Dugu Bo later formally joins Spirit Hall, with Qian Daoliu confirming his elder status. He also agrees to instruct the revived Spirit Hall Second Team 93 96.
Later Campaigns and Cultivation
By Lu Fan’s seventh-ring expedition, Dugu Bo regards him as one of his own rather than merely someone protected under a contract. He accompanies the hunt without hesitation and later agrees to watch over the younger members while Lu Fan pursues divine trials 113 117.
He participates in the ambushes of the Titan Giant Ape and Sky Azure Bull Python, testing his methods for obtaining particular Spirit Bones. During the Soul Hunting Operation, he commands the assault on the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect alongside Pufferfish and Snake Lance Douluo 133 136 138 141.
On Sea God Island, Dugu Bo completes his first trial and studies the Soul Core method supplied by Lu Fan. His existing Poison Core lets him begin condensing a Soul Core much faster than the others 162 167.
Personality
Dugu Bo is proud, foul-tempered, and ruthless toward perceived threats. He resists coercion and initially responds to Lu Fan’s bargaining with threats of torture and death. Lu Fan nevertheless considers him reliable: once Dugu Bo gives his word, his pride makes him unwilling to break it 37 50 53 54.
His granddaughter is his clearest emotional weakness. He quickly abandons his stern demeanor when Dugu Yan becomes upset, and prioritizes her happiness over a prospective partner’s power or family background. His hostility toward Lu Fan begins with suspected deception, not a requirement that Dugu Yan marry a stronger Soul Master 52 53.
He is cautious about political commitments but deeply loyal once trust develops. His support for Lu Fan eventually becomes unconditional, and he openly recognizes how much their alliance has improved both his own prospects and Dugu Yan’s future 61 113 117.
Abilities & Skills
Poison Arts
Dugu Bo has studied poison for decades and uses it for combat, incapacitation, and large-area attacks 92 133 141.
- Mass poisoning: His green mist kills at least eighty percent of the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Pagoda Soul Masters during the initial poison attack on their side of the battlefield 141.
- Blood Swan Kiss enhancement: Refines poison with an Immortal Herb capable of increasing toxicity a hundredfold; even Limit Douluo must fear the resulting poison 84 133.
- Controlled incapacitation: Poisons Tang Yuehua unconscious to interrupt communication with the Clear Sky Sect 92.
- Material damage: Holds back against Tang Hao because his poison could ruin the latter’s Spirit Bones 133.
Seventh Soul Skill: Jade Phosphor True Body
Dugu Bo’s Martial Soul Avatar transforms him into a massive Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor 84.
- Used together with Jade Phosphor Divine Light against the restrained Tang Hao 84.
- Combined with Pufferfish Douluo’s Martial Soul Avatar for the final poison assault on the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect 141.
Ninth Soul Skill: Jade Phosphor Divine Light
Identified as Dugu Bo’s strongest strike during the attack on Tang Hao 84.
- Applied during the Sky Azure Bull Python encounter to extract its right arm bone 138.
- Forms part of his experimental approach to obtaining specific Spirit Bones from hundred-thousand-year Soul Beasts 133 138.
Poison Core and Soul Core
Dugu Bo possesses a Poison Core before learning Lu Fan’s Soul Core cultivation method 58 167.
- Places a jade-green bead inside Lu Fan as a tracking restraint and threatens that his Poison Core could erupt if his control is disrupted 55 58.
- Uses the existing Poison Core as the foundation for his first Soul Core 167 175.
- After successful condensation, his body’s newly generated venom nourishes his Soul Power instead of causing fatal poisoning 175.
Medicine and Herb Knowledge
Dugu Bo describes poison and medicine as inseparable and claims expertise in observation, listening, questioning, and pulse-taking 93.
- Initially lacks the knowledge needed to identify or combine most of his garden’s rare herbs 54 56.
- Studies Yue Guan’s inherited Immortal Herb Illustrated Manual after joining Spirit Hall 135.
- Subsequently identifies Black Jade Divine Bamboo and stands guard while Lu Fan refines it 135.
Defensive Barriers and Combat Limits
- Poison barrier: Protects his medicinal garden with a year-round poisonous boundary that even Titled Douluo hesitate to touch 53.
- Stealth: Abducts Lu Fan without leaving tracks that the latter’s two Soul Saint guards can detect 53.
- Matchup limits: Cannot defeat Yue Guan alone; Yue Guan and Gui Mei together prevent his escape to the poison barrier 58.
- Environmental limits: Initially considers the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well itself too dangerous for even him to enter lightly 56.

Notable Quotes
“My granddaughter could find someone without Soul Power as her future partner. So long as she likes him, so long as she is happy, I will not interfere.” 53
“This is the benefit of choosing the right side.” 117
Trivia
- Keeps Jade Phosphorous Serpents at his residence and is seen letting several coil around his arms while he teases them 113.
- Lu Fan considers him his third original backer, after Yue Guan and Gui Mei, and a priority candidate for a future Godhood inheritance if one becomes available 175.
- The Dugu Bo killed during Lu Fan’s Asura Illusion Realm is an illusion, not the real character 181.
