Background & History

Testing Ling Chen

Tang Hao brought Ling Chen to Chen Xin after reporting that the child could briefly manifest an unusually sharp sword-type Martial Soul in Slaughter City. Chen Xin oversaw Ling Chen's awakening, which revealed the tool-type Green Steel Sword and Innate Full Soul Power of level 10. Intrigued but cautious, he arranged a duel to judge Ling Chen's combat techniques and domain before accepting him as a personal disciple. 19

Chen Xin forbade himself from using soul skills and challenged Ling Chen to survive five rounds. Ling Chen's Green Steel Sword chipped the Seven Kill Sword during their first clash, forcing Chen Xin to acknowledge the weapon's exceptional power. As Ling Chen's Peerless Domain expanded and intensified, Chen Xin became increasingly serious; when Ling Chen lost control and flooded the arena with killing intent, Chen Xin joined Gu Rong and Tang Hao in suppressing him. 19 20

Master and Mentor

By the time Ling Chen acquired his first Soul Ring, Chen Xin was recognized as his master. He investigated the Green Steel Sword but found no comparable Martial Soul even after consulting a hundred ancient texts. Testing the weapon himself, he confirmed that its hundred-catty weight and sharpness could tear through Gu Rong's Bone Armor even without Chen Xin using soul skills. 21 23

Concerned that Ling Chen had become dependent on the Green Steel Sword's overwhelming power, Chen Xin sealed the boy's Martial Soul for a year and supplied him with an ordinary iron sword instead. He taught Ling Chen that a sword cultivator must cultivate both blade and heart, guiding him toward sword intent rather than relying solely on raw weapon strength. 23 24

Defense of the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect

When Ling Chen warned of Martial Soul Hall's planned assault, Chen Xin resolved to protect his disciple despite the danger of becoming a target himself. 31

During Martial Soul Hall's attack on the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect, Chen Xin and Gu Rong fought four enemy Title Douluo. Chen Xin suppressed the opposing Douluos while Gu Rong protected the sect's defenses, then broke the chain-ball prison trapping Ling Chen with a sword aura powerful enough to devastate Bone Armor Douluo when he intercepted it. Chen Xin and Gu Rong subsequently pursued and killed Bone Armor Douluo. 32 34

Later Reunions and Sparring

Chen Xin recognized Ling Chen when the latter returned to Shrek Academy disguised as an adult. Pleased by his disciple's growth, he stopped Ling Chen's match against the Shrek Seven Devils before serious injuries occurred and arranged for him to train alongside the Shrek Six Monsters. 56

In a later spar, Chen Xin used his Seven Kill Sword Martial Soul Avatar against Ling Chen and the Shrek Six Monsters, effortlessly countering their clones, soul skills, and coordinated attacks. Ling Chen nevertheless pushed him with a 140% all-attribute reduction from Peerless Domain and the Heaven-Execution Sword Formation. 57

After Ling Chen reached the Title Douluo rank, he returned to the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect to consult Chen Xin on the Seven Kill Formula. Their spar ended with Chen Xin acknowledging that Ling Chen had grown beyond his expectations after Ling Chen's Heavenly Law, Earthly Manifestation and Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation overwhelmed Chen Xin's techniques. 85

Chen Xin later travelled with Ling Chen toward the Jialing Pass battlefield. They were intercepted by Tang San and Xiao Wu, leading Chen Xin to duel Tang San while Ling Chen faced the Shrek Five Monsters. 86

Personality

Chen Xin is discerning about talent and does not accept Ling Chen's potential at face value. He tests the child's Martial Soul, domain, and combat ability personally, yet becomes openly appreciative once Ling Chen proves the Green Steel Sword's destructive power. 19 20 23

As a master, he is strict but protective. He restricts Ling Chen's access to the Green Steel Sword to correct his reliance on it, intervenes when Ling Chen is threatened, and reminds him that he has people to rely on beyond violence. 23 24 26

He can be merciful even while displaying overwhelming force. When six Shrek Academy students provoke Ling Chen, Chen Xin tests them with a single sword aura rather than pursuing a lethal confrontation after they surrender. 26
