As more and more people gathered around, the gatekeeper no longer knew what to do.
He hurriedly lifted his foot and stepped back, signaling that he had not meant to step on the certificate.
Just as Old Jack bent down to pick it up, Yun Feng stopped him.
"Grandpa, don't bend down. It isn't worth it."
Old Jack froze when he heard that. He raised his head and looked at his grandson's small frame. Though Yun Feng stood against the light, he seemed impossibly tall.
Jack's bent back slowly straightened.
Yun Feng narrowed his eyes at the gatekeeper and barked:
"Pick it up!"
Before the gatekeeper could react, Yun Feng shouted again:
"Pick it up!"
The gatekeeper was now completely exposed to everyone's stares. There were only two possible outcomes to Yun Feng doing this. One was that the gatekeeper would feel humiliated and lash out.
The other was that he would back down, deciding it was better to avoid trouble.
Some things could not be retreated from, and some precedents could not be set.
That was what Yun Feng believed in!
"Enough. Let's leave it at that."
At that moment, a somewhat hoarse voice rang out, stopping the gatekeeper as he was about to bend down.
The gatekeeper blanked out at first. Then the misery on his face instantly turned into fawning flattery. The change was so quick it was hard to believe. He bowed and scraped before the newcomer.
"Grandmaster, you're back."
Yun Feng and the others turned around to see a man of average height and slightly thin build standing beside them at some point.
He looked to be around forty or fifty. His short black hair was parted three-seven, and his features were utterly ordinary. His hands were clasped behind his back, yet he carried a peculiar air about him. His half-lidded eyes held a trace of laziness and despondency.
Seeing this, Yun Feng did not even know what to say.
Would strong women like Bibi Dong and Liu Erlong really fall for this type?
He looked so plain, yet so confident!
Yun Feng was not saying a man's appearance was that important. After all, one's inner qualities mattered far more than looks. But was Yu Xiaogang worthy of them?
And what exactly did he mean by that?
Tang San's expression did not look good either. Just when the matter had reached its conclusion, some middle-aged man suddenly appeared.
Yu Xiaogang also noticed the looks in their eyes. By chance, he spotted the certificate on the ground, narrowed his eyes, and said directly to the gatekeeper:
"They told you to pick it up. Didn't you hear them?"
"Do you still want to work here?"
Yu Xiaogang's shift in tone came so quickly that those present could barely process it.
The gatekeeper was dumbfounded, but he still bent down and picked up the certificate. After wiping it with his sleeve, he reluctantly said:
"I'm sorry. I was blind and looked down on you, Grandmaster!"
At this point, the gatekeeper no longer cared much about Yun Feng and the others. Instead, his heart was filled with fury toward Yu Xiaogang.
Yet he did not dare show it.
Yu Xiaogang ignored the gatekeeper and took the certificate directly, inspecting it. While he read it, Yun Feng and Tang San studied Yu Xiaogang as well. His pupils contracted before quickly returning to normal, and he looked Yun Feng and Tang San over from head to toe.
"The certificate is genuine. Old sir, I apologize on behalf of the academy for what happened just now. Leave these two children to me."
Old Jack was merely an ordinary man. Facing an apology from a Spirit Master, he was somewhat uneasy. He quickly waved his hands.
"No need to apologize, no need. We weren't entirely blameless either. Grandmaster, then I'll leave the children in your care. Feng'er, San, follow Grandmaster inside. And make sure you behave."
Yun Feng nodded, his eyes carrying a trace of reluctance.
Spirit Master cultivation was not like the cultivation in immortal novels, where a glance could span a thousand years. But once one stepped onto the path of cultivation, it was destined that there would be more partings than reunions.
The times they could meet again in the future were bound to become much fewer.
It was like entering school in one's youth and stepping into society after growing up. The time spent with one's parents would never be as much as the time one spent facing the world alone.
Though Yun Feng was not mentally a child, he still felt a little sad in the face of such primal affection.
At that moment, Tang San silently retracted his Sleeve Arrow.
He fell into deep thought. In his eyes, the little brat's way of handling things had undoubtedly left behind future trouble.
According to the Tang Sect's rules, someone harboring such resentment should be eliminated immediately.
[Tang Sect Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record General Principles, Article Three: Once an opponent is confirmed to be an enemy, if they have taken the way to death, show no mercy. Otherwise, one will only bring trouble upon oneself.]
In Tang San's view, the gatekeeper's harshness and contemptuous gaze alone meant he had already taken the way to death.
Moreover, he was absolutely certain that no one, including Old Jack, would discover that he had fired that Sleeve Arrow.
Without evidence, who could say that he had killed the man?
The Tang Sect's Silent Sleeve Arrow fired at an extremely fast speed, leaving behind only a shadow. How could someone like that gatekeeper possibly dodge it?
Yun Feng and Tang San watched Old Jack slowly disappear beyond the horizon before turning to Yu Xiaogang.
As if deliberately putting on a display, Yu Xiaogang shot the gatekeeper a cold glance and said:
"This is the first time, and the last. If it happens again, you won't need to stay here."
Cold sweat broke out across the gatekeeper's back. He hurriedly agreed and moved aside.
Yu Xiaogang lowered his head to look at Yun Feng and Tang San. He squeezed out a smile, though his facial muscles seemed rather stiff, making the expression difficult to praise.
"Which one of you is Tang San?"
Tang San stepped forward and said directly to Yu Xiaogang:
"Teacher, what do you need?"
"Teacher? I'm not a teacher at this academy. I'm just a resident here, freeloading on food and drink."
A glint flashed through Yu Xiaogang's eyes. He looked down at Tang San and replied blandly.
Just as Yu Xiaogang was about to continue, a voice suddenly called out from the crowd:
"He's just a freeloader!"
The moment Yu Xiaogang heard that, his anger flared!
He immediately turned toward the source of the voice, but failed to find its owner. There were simply too many people around. In the end, he could only look helplessly at Tang San and say:
"Let's go inside first. Don't let a bunch of cowardly rats hiding in the shadows affect us!"
Yun Feng knew what was going to happen next, so naturally he would not go with Yu Xiaogang. He said directly:
"Grandmaster, do you know where we're supposed to register?"
After glancing at Yun Feng, Yu Xiaogang said nothing more and merely pointed in a direction.
Yun Feng said directly to Tang San:
"Tang San, I'll go take a look around the academy first. I won't be going with you."
Though Tang San was somewhat surprised, he still nodded to show that he understood.
