Five hours earlier, Wanda had left the Mutant Apartment early in the morning and followed the lead Lorna had uncovered to a Chinatown in Manhattan, New York.
According to the information they'd gathered, there had been a foreign doctor named Carl in the village where Skye was born. At the time, he had apparently gone to the Chinese countryside to conduct research and volunteer as a doctor for the poor villagers.
Later, for reasons no one knew, a terrible disaster struck the village, and nearly everyone there died. But while the foreign doctor Carl had disappeared, he was the only one who hadn't been found dead.
Back then, in China, the arrival of a foreign doctor volunteering in the countryside would have been enough to alert the local government. After such a terrible disaster struck the village, the incident drew even more attention.
And yet, after the foreigner disappeared, no one heard anything about him.
Clearly, Carl was hiding a secret. It seemed to be the reason Skye had lost her parents.
After a great deal of trouble, Lorna and Thunderbird, who could see the past, had repeatedly followed the trail and investigated. It had taken a great deal of effort to find traces of Dr. Carl. They hadn't expected that he, too, had come to New York.
In New York, Carl appeared to work as a doctor as well, except that he practiced without a license. That meant he could only hide out in a place like Chinatown, where the police didn't pay much attention.
Wanda followed the address to the clinic. A narrow staircase led up to its entrance on the second floor. Even from the hallway on the ground floor, Wanda could smell the faint scent of blood coming from inside.
