Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Initial telepathic manifestation | 347 | Belcher’s research indicates Wanda’s power originally manifested as telepathy before evolving into telekinesis-like effects; the exact cause of this mutation remains unproven. 347 |
| Early Scarlet Energy control | 63–86 | Generates barriers against gunfire and armored vehicles, moves or restrains targets telekinetically, and develops the ability to influence emotions and calm Tony’s berserk state. Her output is unstable and quickly exhausts her. 63 84 86 |
| Post-Klaue escalation | 296 | After psychically devastating Ulysses Klaue, her telekinetic capacity rises severalfold from under one ton, while her telepathic range expands from roughly 30 meters to 100 meters. She can knead glass, concrete, and metal as though they were soft material. 296 |
| Enhanced Scarlet Energy | 447 | Following Luo Xia’s enhancement of superpowered allies, Wanda’s overall power is greatly increased; however, sustained combat against combined Skrull and Kree forces can still drain her completely. 447 |
| Rona-triggered recovery | 447 | After Rona’s energy envelops her during a barrage, Wanda’s depleted reserves are restored and her Scarlet Energy rises dramatically, allowing her to withstand city-level bombardment. 447 |
Background
Wanda and her twin brother Pietro lost their parents in an incident involving a Stark-branded missile. The tragedy was later revealed to have been engineered by Ulysses Klaue for Hydra: the missile was deliberately made not to explode so the twins would endure prolonged despair and become suitable candidates for Hydra’s enhancement experiments. Wanda and Pietro survived those experiments. 295 296
After escaping their former circumstances, the siblings attempted to stow away but were deceived, trafficked to Afghanistan, and hunted after escaping their captors. During Luo Xia’s raid on a terrorist-held plaza, Wanda shielded him and the hostages with a red energy barrier until the exertion caused her to collapse. 63 64
Initially believing Tony Stark was responsible for her parents’ deaths, Wanda confronted him alongside Pietro. Luo Xia’s intervention and subsequent evidence caused the twins to question that belief; they ultimately accepted temporary shelter and support in New York. Wanda later became Luo Xia’s assistant at AllSpark. 64 65 67 71
Appearance
Wanda is first described as a fair-skinned teenager, estimated to be between fifteen and seventeen years old, with an appearance Luo Xia considers European or Russian rather than Afghan. 63 64 She later has long dark-red hair and is noted for her crimson-themed attire. 81 454 554
- Scarlet light can flash in her eyes when she uses her powers. 71
- Her Scarlet Energy manifests as crimson mist, tendrils, shields, storms, and barriers. 63 104 447
- She wore an evening gown for the first time at Tony Stark’s party and was visibly uncomfortable with its high heels and attention. 81
Personality
Wanda is initially shy, easily embarrassed, and uncomfortable in unfamiliar social settings. She blushes when Luo Xia gives her attention and worries that others will reject or fear her telepathy. 64 81 82 Despite this insecurity, she is observant and decisive: she identifies Grant Ward’s false identity, warns Luo Xia about Obadiah Stane’s intentions, and helps expose threats through telepathic insight. 71 82
She is compassionate toward people who have suffered as she has. Wanda advocates for Lorna, invites her into a sister-like bond, and risks her revenge mission to save children being sent into Hydra experimentation. 101 104 298 Her empathy can coexist with ruthlessness; against enemies such as Klaue and Hydra personnel, grief and anger push her toward brutal, excessive uses of her powers. 295 296 298
Wanda recognizes her own recklessness after nearly dying in Sokovia and accepts Kerrigan’s reprimand. Her later protection of Rona—Skye and Luo Xia’s daughter—demonstrates that she will act selflessly even when personal jealousy and emotional conflict are involved. 299 447 452
Abilities & Skills
Scarlet Energy and Telekinesis
Wanda channels crimson energy with telekinetic and destructive properties.
- Creates barriers capable of stopping armed terrorists, bullets, and armored vehicles. 63
- Restrains, drags, slows, or binds opponents, including Ivan Vanko’s mechanical arm and Tony’s transformed body. 84 85
- Shapes and manipulates physical matter; after her growth, she can compress glass, concrete, and metal into a single sphere. 296
- Forms large-scale attacks such as Scarlet Energy storms, tendrils, and redirected bullet barrages. 299 447
- Can withstand heavy artillery fire when operating at her later power level. 445
- Early use carries severe stamina costs; maintaining one effect can prevent her from defending herself against another threat. 63 84
- A Sentinel Services collar can suppress her powers through painful neural pulses and disrupt her concentration. 222 225
Telepathy and Mental Influence
Wanda can sense, enter, and influence minds.
- Detects lies, hidden identities, intentions, and self-hypnotic conditioning. 64 71 82
- Communicates telepathically, though prolonged use can exhaust her enough that physical contact is needed to maintain the connection. 71
- Plants psychological suggestions in weak-willed targets and can hypnotize Hydra soldiers into following commands. 128 298
- Soothes or destabilizes emotions; she calms Tony out of his berserk transformation and can induce rage in others. 86
- Her mental control is not instantaneous in direct combat and requires time to take effect. 298
- At heightened output, she can forcibly shatter a victim’s consciousness, as she does to Klaue, leaving him vegetative. 296
Scarlet-Energy Mobility
Wanda uses her power to survive falls and propel herself across great distances.
- Descends safely from an eighth-floor window using Scarlet Energy like a parachute. 296
- Launches herself more than a thousand meters with telekinetic force. 447
Equipment / Items
- Power-enhancing red necklace — Wanda’s former most precious possession; it significantly strengthens mental power and can produce a qualitative boost for superpowered users. She gives it to Rona. 452
- Voice-altering metal mask — Used while disguised as one of “Indra’s” followers; blocks X-ray vision and conceals her voice. 327
Relationships
- Pietro Maximoff — Her twin brother and closest early companion. Pietro is intensely protective of Wanda, repeatedly rescues her in combat, and tries to stop her from pursuing self-destructive revenge alone. 63 84 296
- Luo Xia — Rescuer, employer, romantic partner, and later husband. Wanda becomes his assistant after he brings the twins to New York; she trusts his acceptance of her telepathy and relies on him during crises. 67 71 82 224 554
- Lorna — Friend whom Wanda views as a potential sister due to their similar isolation and superhuman lives. Wanda helps persuade Lorna that Luo Xia did not intend to harm Claire and supports her place in the mutant community. 101 104 125
- Tony Stark — Initially blamed by Wanda for her parents’ deaths, but later treated as an ally after the truth of Hydra and Klaue’s conspiracy emerges. Wanda helps subdue his uncontrolled transformation. 64 65 86 295
- Skye — Friend and fellow member of Luo Xia’s circle. Wanda volunteers to investigate Skye’s father, though the search results in her capture by Cal. 221 222
- Rona — Luo Xia and Skye’s daughter. Although Rona represents a painful complication in Wanda’s relationship with Luo Xia, Wanda protects her from Ronan, gives her a power-enhancing necklace, and earns Skye’s gratitude. 447 452
- Kerrigan — AllSpark operative who rescues Wanda and the children from Hydra’s Sokovian fortress, then bluntly rebukes Wanda for risking her life. 299
- Cal Zabo — Captor who mistakenly believes Wanda is his lost daughter, Daisy. His delusion leads him to imprison her with a power-suppressing collar until Luo Xia intervenes. 222 223 225
