The chaos that erupted inside the bar did not last long; the man in the suit and glasses was dragged away by the Russians, while Luo Xia quickly hoisted Karen Page and sprinted out of the establishment.
Although the remaining two Russians were left with one dead and one severely wounded, death was hardly a rare occurrence in Hell's Kitchen. It was even less remarkable when the deceased were covered in tattoos and clearly identified as mobsters.
Some people called the police, but most hurried away, terrified of getting involved in the trouble. The unluckiest person was likely the bar owner, who stood to lose a night's worth of business—or perhaps several.
Roughly an hour later, Karen Page regained consciousness, only to find herself in the backseat of a vehicle.
"Daniel? What happened?" Karen Page asked the person driving.
Before the man could answer, Karen Page caught a glimpse of his reflection in the rearview mirror and realized with a start that he was Asian.
"Who are you? Where is Daniel?" Karen Page asked, her voice tight with tension.
"I don't have time to explain everything in detail right now, but you need to know that you were drugged at the bar. It was the work of Global Consolidated Investment, and it seems to be related to the accounting data you've been hiding."
The man in the driver's seat was, naturally, Luo Xia. He was currently rushing toward the warehouse docks on 6th Street and had no time to drop off the unconscious Karen Page. Besides, on the eve of this chaos, there was no place safer than Luo Xia's Sand Off-road Vehicle.
Hearing Luo Xia's words, Karen Page remained skeptical, but she was intelligent enough to steady her emotions and avoid doing anything reckless.
After a moment of thought, Karen Page spoke up: "So you saved me? What about Daniel? Is he alright?"
"He's fine. By now, he should have already left Hell's Kitchen with his family. You, however, are a bit less fortunate; I'm in the middle of something and don't have time to take you to a safe house. But as long as you stay in this car, I can guarantee your safety."
"Are you a cop? Or a federal agent? Can I at least know your name?" Karen Page pressed for his identity again.
"Luo Xia. You can call me Luo Xia, but I'm not with the government. Alright, we're here. Wait for me in the car. Once this is finished, I think you'll be able to go home safely." With that, Luo Xia parked the car on the side of the road and stepped out alone.
The moment he was out of sight, Karen Page immediately began pulling at the door handle, intending to escape this unfamiliar place. Although Luo Xia hadn't seemed malicious, who knew if he was telling the truth? Karen Page could only trust herself.
However, no matter what she tried, the door wouldn't budge, and she couldn't find a lock button anywhere in the cabin. Just as she was about to take off her high heel to smash the window, an electronically synthesized voice echoed through the interior.
"Wait! Ms. Page, I don't think violence is the solution to your problems."
The sudden voice startled Karen Page. She asked tentatively, "Luo Xia? Is that you?"
"No, no, no. The Commander has gone to attend to his business. You may call me Luo Fei. I suggest you put the high heel down; we can discuss things calmly. How about I play some music to soothe your nerves? 'Nights in the Moscow Suburbs,' how does that sound?" the strange electronic voice said to Karen Page.
"Let me out, or you'll be the one talking to the insurance company about vehicle repairs." Karen Page stopped hiding her intentions. In her view, this was likely some kind of remote-control software for the car. Since the man wasn't here, her courage grew.
"I'm afraid that will disappoint you. This window might look thin, but it's actually bulletproof glass," Luo Fei explained.
Karen Page didn't give up; she struck the window several times with her heel, only to find in vain that the glass was incredibly sturdy—not even a scratch appeared. She finally gave up on the idea of leaving the cabin.
What made Karen Page even more miserable was that the car actually began to play that old music, the kind only her grandparents would listen to.
So, locking me in here was meant for interrogation by torture! This is a noise-chamber interrogation!
Luo Xia had no idea that Luo Fei was busy introducing an American to his revolutionary oldies. He was currently sneaking onto the roof of the warehouse that Matt had investigated.
Luo Xia had his Tactical Goggles, and Matt had his super-hearing; both could clearly perceive the situation beneath the thin sheet metal.
Iron cages were being loaded into shipping containers and then onto trucks. It was obvious these people were being transported to the docks for a trade.
"Five trucks in total, sixteen men, all armed," Matt said to Luo Xia.
"We strike at the docks, when they start unloading. Otherwise, if one truck gets away, it'll be a pain to track down," Luo Xia suggested.
"Agreed, our operation must be—" Matt stopped mid-sentence, his expression suddenly shifting.
Luo Xia noticed the problem too. Of the five trucks, only four were heading toward the docks, while the fifth was veering toward the city center.
In the middle of the night, why would they head toward the city center instead of taking these human trafficking victims to the docks?
"Luo Xia, what do we do now?" Matt asked, sounding a bit anxious.
"We split up. I'll take the docks; you go chase that truck," Luo Xia said.
Compared to Matt, who was alone, Luo Xia had Violet and Li Bai to assist him, making it easier to deal with the larger number of Russian mobsters.
Matt didn't hesitate; he had confidence in Luo Xia's strength. The only real issue was how to catch up.
Luo Xia had already arranged it. Luo Fei drove out from a hidden corner and pulled up right alongside the warehouse.
"Take the car and go. The docks are close; I can make it there on foot."
After saying this, Luo Xia jumped from the warehouse roof. His Sensor Glove utilized powerful magnetic adsorption to grip the metal frame outside the building, successfully slowing his descent.
Luo Xia landed with a smooth roll, dissipating the impact force from the twenty-meter drop.
Matt didn't waste a second either. He landed easily on the off-road vehicle and scrambled to open the door and dive into the driver's seat. However, the moment he pulled the door open, a high heel came flying at his face.
Fortunately, Matt's hearing was exceptional; he heard the sound of the shoe cutting through the air and caught it mid-flight.
"Who are you?"
Inside and outside the car, the man and the woman asked in unison.
Then, a Chinese song that neither of them understood began to play inside the cabin: "Who are you? For whom? My comrade, when will you return..."
Although the lyrics were strangely fitting, the atmosphere plunged into intense awkwardness.
