Background

Sun City is an underground settlement enclosed by a colossal barrier formed from hollowed earth crust. Its apparent sky is artificial: the clouds and illumination are manufactured rather than natural. 8

The city was renamed Sun City after Feng Zi’s father brought the Light Stone to the White Tower. The Stone, described by Feng Zi as the physical embodiment of optical laws, was intended to provide nearly inexhaustible light energy for the city’s development and to reduce laborers’ burdens. Instead, the ruling class elevated it into a civic symbol and luxury spectacle. 6 15 17

Geography and Districts

The underground river divides Yuguang from the Radiance side. Only two tightly controlled railway bridges connect the districts. 43

Society and Economy

• Sun City’s social divide is stark: Yuguang functions as a laboring slum, while Radiance enjoys the infrastructure and living standards of a modern city. 17 43
• The city’s prosperity depends heavily on labor-intensive industry, including coal extraction and factory work. 9 43
• Human-resources companies profit from the legal trafficking of Yuguang residents: women are commonly sent to red-light districts, while men are sold to illicit factories. 43
• Firearms are tightly controlled; ordinary organizations generally lack authorization to possess them, unlike police and core company security. 14
• The city’s artificial light-cloud infrastructure enables rare cross-city communications devices, though such equipment is normally reserved for government organizations. 26

• Sunlight Council — The city’s governing authority. It controls police action, issues warrants, and oversees political appointments, including a vacant senior council seat intended to be established during the Festival of Radiance. 16 18 25
• Sun City Police Department — Conducts citywide searches and enforces Council warrants. Its actions in Yuguang are especially significant because the district lacks a main police station. 18 25
• Afterglow Labor Union — Administers Yuguang and maintains basic public order on the Council’s behalf. 25
