Background / History

Ayanokoji entered Advanced Nurturing High School as a first-year Class D student. Before the Black Sphere trials overtook the school, he had already completed the fourth generation of the White Room curriculum and came to the school looking for something worth striving for—something that could make him feel alive 57.

He initially remained outside the Black Sphere’s first selected group, observing Su Wei, Kushida Kikyo, and the shifting dynamics around the Special Exams without involving himself 25 69. During the Kabane crisis, however, he worked with Hirata Yosuke to draw monsters away from trapped students, saved Hirata from infection, and began deducing that students dissolved into blue light according to rules the group did not yet understand 26 28.

Repeated encounters with The Silence made him suspect that his memories had been altered. He experienced a memory blank upon seeing the creature, later found a photograph of a Molotov cocktail on his phone, and recognized that he had encountered the memory-altering monster before 31 35 58.

Appearance

Ayanokoji is an outwardly unremarkable Class D student whose subdued demeanor makes him easy to overlook.

  • Slender, usually expressionless eyes 42.
  • Often presents himself as a listless or unmotivated student 25 207.
  • Maintains an inconspicuous presence despite his exceptional conditioning and combat ability.

Personality

Ayanokoji is detached, observant, and intensely pragmatic. He avoids involving himself in others’ affairs unless doing so serves a purpose, preferring to watch interpersonal dynamics and hidden variables from the background 25 173.

In dangerous situations, he prioritizes survival, information, and efficiency over appearances. He will accept compromises to avoid revealing his strength, wait for safer conditions rather than act impulsively, and make decisions based on maximum benefit rather than sentiment 29 42 153.

Despite this detachment, he repeatedly protects others when doing so is strategically viable. He rescues Hirata during the Kabane attack, uses his Titan and Parasite abilities to extract students from a volcanic disaster, and volunteers as an Intruder to protect classmates while earning points 28 133 153.

His curiosity is one of his defining motives. Even after choosing to withdraw from the Black Sphere system, he later recognizes that he left because he needed to see for himself whether its supernatural events were real 147 229.

Abilities & Skills

White Room Conditioning

Ayanokoji’s physical and mental foundations originate from his White Room education.

  • Completed the fourth-generation curriculum and is described as its greatest masterpiece 57.
  • Possesses exceptional muscle control, lung capacity, and cardiovascular endurance 107.
  • Can remain calm under lethal pressure and rapidly assess unfamiliar rules, terrain, and opponents 28 45 79.
  • Applies trained observation to construct a three-dimensional mental map of examination terrain and identify escape routes 79.

Strategic Analysis

He specializes in recognizing hidden rules, minimizing losses, and concealing his full capability.

  • Determined that the Wolf and Sheep Game’s role swap was triggered by eye contact 41.
  • Rejected concentrating all Class D points on one participant after identifying the wristband’s duel-lock restriction 78.
  • Proposed distributing points so teammates retained at least one point after a forced 500-point duel loss 78.
  • Chose to avoid exposing his strength during negotiations with Kanzaki, accepting information and point compensation instead 42.
  • Identified Kars’s likely escape route after the Pillar Man fled with only his brain and nerves remaining 177.

Ripple Qi Gong

Ayanokoji began training in Ripple Qi Gong as preparation for future Black Sphere exams.

  • His cold, near-pathologically still mindset suits the technique’s requirement for a tranquil mind 107.
  • Can generate life energy capable of harming Evil Spirits that resist ordinary physical attacks 107 113.
  • Initially lacked the time needed to fully master the technique 107.
  • Used a Straizo Disc to reinforce his Ripple in battle against Esidisi 175.

Parasite — Zero

Ayanokoji fused with a Parasite named Zero, which remains mentally linked to him.

  • Zero can communicate with him telepathically while stored in a Universal Capsule 147.
  • The Parasite can mutate into blades and numerous tentacles for combat and rescue operations 133 158.
  • Ayanokoji used its tentacles to retrieve Stone Masks from a distance 168.
  • The Parasite’s abilities are restricted on school grounds, though their telepathic link remains available 144.
  • Zero is concerned about being left behind if Ayanokoji leaves the Black Sphere system 147 201.

Armored Titan Transformation

Using Armored Titan Serum alongside the Parasite, Ayanokoji can transform into a 15-meter giant.

  • The transformation grants immense size and armored physical power 157.
  • He used the Titan form and Parasite tentacles to rescue students trapped by lava during the Uninhabited Island exam 133.
  • The transformation cannot be used within school grounds 144.
  • In combat against Su Wei, its legs were crippled, forcing Ayanokoji to cancel the transformation and switch to close-quarters combat 158.

Time Stop

Ayanokoji possesses a time-stopping ability.

  • Its use was confirmed when he appeared against Neferpitou and wounded her by stopping time 201.
  • The ability gives him a decisive surprise advantage against enemies with superior speed 201.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Reinforcement Suit — Part of his combat equipment set; provides enhanced physical ability and protection 159.
  • Parasite “Zero” — A fused Parasite capable of forming blades and tentacles; stored in a Universal Capsule when not active 147 158.

Relationships

  • Su Wei — Initially observed him from a distance and avoided involvement, but later exchanged exam intelligence, sparred with him in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, and cooperated with him against Kars 25 90 157 177.
  • Hirata Yosuke — Temporary partner during the Kabane crisis; Ayanokoji saved Hirata from a Kabane attack and later planned Black Sphere strategies with him 28 153.
  • Zero — His mentally linked Parasite partner. Zero questions whether Ayanokoji will take it with him if he leaves the Black Sphere system 147 201.
  • Koenji Rokusuke — Strategic peer who recognizes Ayanokoji’s willingness to take calculated risks; they later coordinate plans for exams and Stone Mask collection 78 177.
  • Amasawa Ichika — A transfer student from the White Room whose past connection to him immediately raises his suspicions 65 83.
  • Horikita Manabu — Ayanokoji joined his team during an upperclassman exam and followed his tactical lead; Manabu acknowledged Ayanokoji’s sharp senses 58.
  • Nagumo Miyabi — Nagumo regards Ayanokoji as a potential rival and is disappointed by his withdrawal from school 60 207.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Kabane and The Silence Crisis

Ayanokoji becomes directly involved when Kabane attack the school. He protects Hirata, studies the blue-light dissolution of bitten students, and recognizes that the crisis operates according to concealed Black Sphere rules 26 28.

He later realizes that The Silence has tampered with his memory, connecting the monster to prior gaps in his recollection and the unexplained Molotov cocktail image on his phone 31 35.

Advance Tests

During the Wolf and Sheep Game, Ayanokoji identifies the eye-contact role-swap mechanic and chooses a low-profile resolution rather than forcing a victory that would reveal his ability 41 42.

In the King of Clubs test, he develops Class D’s point-distribution strategy, prioritizes item points over temporary base scores, and helps secure Class D’s victory 78 80 88.

Uninhabited Island Exam

Ayanokoji develops Ripple Qi Gong, fuses with Zero, and gains the ability to transform into the Armored Titan 107 144 157. During the island crisis, he uses the Titan form and Parasite tentacles to rescue students from lava while stronger combatants confront the central threat 133.

Pillar Men Conflict

Ayanokoji joins Su Wei and the others against the Pillar Men. He deflects Esidisi’s boiling blood with a Parasite blade, reinforces his Ripple with a Straizo Disc, and helps determine that Kars survives after escaping in a reduced state 175 177.

Chimera Ant Conflict and Withdrawal

Ayanokoji fights alongside Kiriyama against Menthuthuyoupi, then appears against Neferpitou with the ability to stop time 201. Having decided to test whether the Black Sphere would truly let him leave, he spends 100 S Points to withdraw from the exam and departs Advanced Nurturing 147 214.

Though he leaves the school with his memories apparently blank, Zero continues contacting him through dreams. After witnessing a fatal plane disaster in a Final Destination scenario, he accepts that the Black Sphere is real and recognizes that curiosity drove his decision to leave 229.
