Rhode gave Sulu a long look. "And their Rite of Death has another name—the Ceremony of Bones, Flowers, and the Moon!"
"Then I have to go!"
Sulu shrugged. "Besides... they've also kidnapped my roommate! Right?"

Sulu had always found it exasperating when characters in the TV dramas he'd watched in his previous life were kidnapped, with the kidnappers threatening the protagonist to come alone to some place and do something.
Unless the protagonist had plot armor, they'd have died a hundred times over.
The best way to deal with this sort of thing was still to call the police.
Or, put another way, the best way to counter a threat was to make others think you didn't care at all about the person or thing being threatened.
