"Now!" Xu Yuan felt a chill in his heart as his left hand drew three iron needles from his pouch, channeling soul power into his fingertips.
The three iron needles shot out in a triangular formation, their angles treacherous, aiming respectively for the Nether Wolf's left eye, throat, and front leg joint.
The sound of the iron needles piercing the air was sharp; the Nether Wolf seemed to sense the danger, tossing its head upward in an attempt to dodge.
But Xu Yuan's timing with his hidden weapons was precise, catching the exact gap in its turn.
With two soft puffs, two of the iron needles found their marks.
One grazed its left eye, drawing a trail of blood beads, while the other embedded itself into its front leg joint.
The Nether Wolf hissed in pain, and the moment its body lost balance, Xu Yuan lunged forward.
His right hand drew a dagger from the side pocket of his pack like lightning, and using the momentum of his charge, he thrust the cold blade straight toward the wolf's neck.
The strike was fast and ruthless, piercing accurately into the softest flesh beneath the wolf's throat.
The Nether Wolf's body stiffened violently, its fierce gaze instantly dimming; it struggled to shake its neck, but Xu Yuan pressed its head down firmly.
Xu Yuan twisted his wrist with force, churning the dagger half a circle inside the wolf's neck before pulling it out abruptly.
Blood gushed out, splashing onto half of his sleeve and carrying a heavy, metallic stench.
The Nether Wolf's body twitched a few times before finally going completely limp on the ground, with only its limbs still kicking unconsciously.
Xu Yuan panted heavily, releasing his grip and stepping back half a pace, watching the corpse on the ground gradually lose its warmth while his heart continued to pound wildly.
In that instant just now, he had acted almost entirely on instinct, without a shred of hesitation.
"Decisive enough." The blue phantom of God King Tang San drifted over, his gaze falling on the Nether Wolf's corpse. "But your dagger technique is too raw, and the angle could be more cunning. Had you pierced its heart, it would have bled less and required less effort."
"Yes." Xu Yuan replied, wiping the blood off his dagger with a cloth before tucking it back into his waist. "This is my first time killing a soul beast with a dagger."
God King Tang San nodded slightly. "Actual combat is the best teacher. Remember this feeling; soul beasts will not give you a second chance. To be merciful to an enemy is to be cruel to yourself."
He paused, then added, "Although this Nether Wolf is only a ten-year soul beast, its speed is a good reference for you. Your coordination between hidden weapons and footwork was decent, though the finish was a bit impatient."
Xu Yuan nodded and followed God King Tang San as they continued onward.
The deeper they ventured into the forest, the more humid the air became, permeated with the rich scent of rotting leaves and vegetation.
The branches of towering ancient trees intertwined, almost completely blocking the sky; only sporadic spots of light filtered through the gaps in the leaves, casting flickering shadows on the ground.
After walking for about an hour, the vegetation ahead suddenly became unusually lush.
"Stop." The blue phantom of God King Tang San halted abruptly, the blue light around his body dimming slightly. "There is a soul beast ahead that is very suitable for you."
Xu Yuan immediately held his breath, activating his Purple Demon Eye to look forward.
It was a plant about two people tall, with a main stem as thick as an old vine, covered in layers of green leaves. The edges of the leaves shimmered with an emerald luster, and each leaf held a translucent dewdrop in its center, refracting colorful halos as sunlight passed through them.
"It is a five-hundred-year Green Leaf Silk Vine." God King Tang San's voice carried a hint of imperceptible joy. "It possesses immense vitality; for a Blue Silver Grass martial soul, it is an excellent choice for a soul ring."
Xu Yuan's heart stirred; his left hand suddenly flicked out two iron needles, not aiming at the main stem of the Green Leaf Silk Vine, but at the dangling roots.
The iron needles tore through the air, and just as they were about to strike the roots, the Green Leaf Silk Vine seemed to have sensed it early. The outermost roots suddenly curled up like agile snakes, precisely wrapping around the iron needles.
With a light twist, the iron needles snapped into several pieces and fell to the ground.
"Such fast reactions!" Xu Yuan was secretly startled, deploying his Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track.
His figure approached like a phantom, his right-hand dagger flashing with cold light, feinting toward the main stem while his wrist flipped to slash at a thinner root on the side.
However, the moment the dagger touched the root, Xu Yuan felt as if he had struck a bundle of silk filled with air.
The blade was lightly deflected, while the root remained unscathed and instead lashed out in response.
Xu Yuan was slammed hard against the ground, making a loud sound.
But, to his surprise, Xu Yuan discovered that he was completely unharmed.
Could it be that he possessed an ability that prevented him from being injured?
God King Tang San noticed this as well, but he did not pay it much mind.
He had tested this a few times before, and he simply regarded the situation as one of Xu Yuan's special abilities.
Xu Yuan climbed up from the ground and brushed the fallen leaves off his body.
He looked up at the Green Leaf Silk Vine; the plant still stood quietly in place, its roots swaying gently.
The blue phantom of God King Tang San drifted to Xu Yuan's side, his gaze fixed on the layers of leaves of the Green Leaf Silk Vine, and he spoke slowly: "Its defensive core is at the air-chamber node three inches below the main stem. Those seemingly soft roots can dissipate force entirely because they are supported by the energy channeled from that node."
Xu Yuan took a deep breath and activated his Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track again, his figure moving like a spinning top around the Green Leaf Silk Vine.
He deliberately slowed his pace, his eyes locked on the area below the main stem, his Purple Demon Eye operating at full capacity as he tried to capture the so-called air-chamber node.
"Whoosh—"
A root suddenly lashed out from behind him at an angle, whistling through the air straight toward his heart.
Xu Yuan had been prepared; he shifted his feet and dodged narrowly, only to be struck on the shoulder by another root that followed closely behind, sending him stumbling into an ancient tree.
The moment his back hit the tree trunk, Xu Yuan actually smiled.
It was just as he had thought: he possessed an ability that prevented him from being injured.
"Every time the node vibrates three times, the surrounding roots will react half a beat slower." God King Tang San's voice rang out at the perfect moment.
Xu Yuan immediately seized this half-breath of an opening, kicked off the tree trunk, and launched his body like an arrow released from a bow toward the main stem of the Green Leaf Silk Vine, thrusting directly at a spot three inches below.
"Pfft!"
The dagger sank in an inch, only to be held fast by a layer of tough fibers.
The Green Leaf Silk Vine seemed to have been provoked; all its roots instantly erupted in fury, whipping in from every direction like frenzied lashes to completely envelop Xu Yuan.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
Following several muffled thuds in succession, Xu Yuan was struck by multiple roots simultaneously, sent flying like a ragdoll, and slammed heavily into the ground.
Xu Yuan remained uninjured, as if the Green Leaf Silk Vine were attacking empty air.
Lying on the ground and feeling the soft, decaying leaves beneath him, Xu Yuan felt a mix of amusement and frustration.
Even though those roots had struck his body with enough force to break the air, they landed with the lightness of feathers; far from being injured, he didn't even feel a hint of pain.
Xu Yuan simply stopped struggling and rolled with the momentum, dodging a few roots that were coiling toward him, and even reached out to pat one of the thickest ones.
The root seemed to freeze for a moment, pausing slightly as if puzzled by why this prey was so unafraid of death.
