Location: South of City Hall, Raccoon City district, atop a certain building.
Time: 03:37, New York Time.
"Isaacs?" Buffeted by the freezing wind on the rooftop, Yin Kuang shivered uncontrollably. He bit his chapped lips and spoke into the phone, "If you're there, please tell me the exact location of those mercenaries." As he spoke, Yin Kuang stared at the bundle of grenades tied together in his hand!
Ten high-explosive grenades bound as one—the power of that detonation would be immense! Yin Kuang even wondered, if he threw this bundle at the feet of Matt the Tracker, would it blast him into a bloody mess, or perhaps kill him outright?
Of course, Yin Kuang was only daydreaming while his mind wandered. If he truly had to deal with Matt, just getting this bundle of grenades near him was a nearly impossible task!
Therefore, in Yin Kuang's subconscious, despite his wild fantasies about dealing with Matt the Tracker, he was unwilling to clash with him—absolutely unwilling!
However, what Yin Kuang could never have dreamed of was that his bold, or perhaps reckless, actions had already altered the trajectory of the plot... and indeed, the future of the entire Resident Evil world. Thus, whether as a punishment or a reward, the omnipotent "Headmaster" had pushed this rookie student, who originally only needed to "survive for 5 hours," toward an unknowable future...
Dr. Isaacs, who was supposed to be the main antagonist of Resident Evil: Extinction, was now revealing a foxy, sinister smile in Resident Evil: Apocalypse, and had slowly begun to dictate the flow of the Apocalypse story...
On the other end of the line, Isaacs smiled like a fox, his slightly pale face flickering in the light of the computer screen. "My dear Chinese boy, I am with you. Furthermore, I just thought of a wonderful way to help you easily eliminate those mercenaries."
"I want to know the mercenaries' exact location." Yin Kuang still wanted to handle it himself. He absolutely did not want his life and safety placed entirely in someone else's hands.
"Unfortunately, they are right below the building you are in. If you make even the slightest move, I believe their expertise will allow them to pinpoint your location immediately. And what will greet you then is their gunfire."
"You... didn't you say you would help me?" Yin Kuang felt a sudden rush of blood to his head. "Why are you only telling me now that they've already arrived?"
Isaacs said, "Calm down, Chinese boy. Mania will cause you to lose your composure, thereby blinding your eyes and preventing you from seeing the path forward. Now, I will teach you what to do. Rest assured, as long as you follow my instructions, you will certainly succeed in killing them all."
Yin Kuang took a deep breath, nodded, and said, "Then, what should I do now?"
"Now, go down the stairs on the other side of the building you are in. You will see a low, three-story building not far away. It is very conspicuous, because in a Raccoon City filled with skyscrapers, such buildings are rare." Isaacs said, "Then, enter that building as fast as you can. Of course, before that, you must actively expose your position. To be honest, those mercenaries don't fully trust the former supervisor either. So, you must use yourself as bait."
Yin Kuang gritted his teeth, went to the other side of the rooftop, and descended the side fire escape quickly. Because the stairs were made of iron, he moved very lightly, trying his best not to make a sound. However, when he heard Isaacs say he had to use himself as bait, he couldn't help but pause and say, "Use myself as bait? Are you sure you aren't joking?"
"You have a choice. Either do as I say, or wait for death." Isaacs said, "However, if you choose death, I hope you will first tell me the hiding place of that little puppy. The miracles created by the Creator should not be wasted like that. That would be a shameful act."
"...Fine." Yin Kuang said, "I see the building. What's next? What should I do?"
"No need to rush. They won't find you for a while. I have already lured them to a more distant position." Isaacs said, "Perhaps I should tell you a bit about the history of Raccoon City..."
"I'm not interested in the slightest."
"But it concerns your life. Chinese boy, you should learn to be more patient."
"I fear the less patient I am, the happier you'll be. Hmph! You'd better not take me for a fool either!" Yin Kuang sneered in his heart and said, "I'm listening."
Thus, Isaacs began, "Do you know why the Umbrella Corporation chose this place to establish a branch? It wasn't because it was hidden, but because of the energy!"
"Energy?"
"Correct! Beneath Raccoon City lies a massive natural gas deposit! Its reserves are staggering. To put it bluntly, the natural gas stored here is enough to supply the residents of an entire American state for half a century! You can fully imagine its value. Initially, the United States, which relied heavily on oil, was hit hard by the oil-producing countries in the Middle East, suffering immeasurable losses. The Umbrella Corporation was also hit hard by that oil price hike. And it was precisely then that the Umbrella Corporation discovered a massive natural gas deposit here... You can imagine, that is how the Raccoon City branch was established. From a small town back then to the metropolis with over a hundred thousand people today, the Umbrella Corporation deserves much of the credit."
To be honest, Isaacs had said a mouthful, but with Yin Kuang's English level, he only roughly understood the meaning. "You... you are destroying it now!"
"No, no, no! Not us, but the greed of human nature!" Isaacs said, "You should know the black market price of the T-Virus; many people are salivating over it! Aren't you one of them? If someone hadn't stolen the T-Virus, causing the leak, none of this would have happened."
"Doctor, now is not the time to discuss human nature."
"Just a kind reminder, Chinese boy. The T-Virus is far more terrifying than you can imagine. I hope you use it with caution, unless you want all of humanity to be destroyed. Now, back to the point... as I said before, Raccoon City is a city that rose because of the natural gas deposits. The entire city has a very complete natural gas pipeline network. And that small three-story building is a warehouse for a natural gas company under the Umbrella Corporation. It stores a large amount of natural gas. So..."
"I understand, you want me to lure them there and then blow them up?"
"Exactly!"
"Doctor, do you think I'm an idiot? If I blow them up, what about me?"
"Hehe, you may have forgotten that everything in Raccoon City is under the control of the Umbrella Corporation. Due to certain needs, a self-destruct system was installed there. You only need to lure them inside, activate the self-destruct sequence, and then escape through a secret passage. Everything will be settled!"
"...A self-destruct system? You Umbrella Corporation people are truly a bunch of lunatics! Setting up a natural gas warehouse in a downtown area, and then installing a self-destruct system—what are you trying to do?!"
"If you want to know, I would be happy to explain it to you slowly..." Isaacs sneered.
"No need!" Yin Kuang said, "Tell me, where are those mercenaries now?"
"Right on your left hand side..."
******************************
In a dim alley, two people, one tall and one short, four eyes—big eyes and small eyes—stared at each other, motionless. The atmosphere was incredibly eerie.
The next moment...
"Boss, he's here!!" Mori suddenly shouted, then raised his gun and opened fire!
"Shit!! I'm going to kill you, Isaacs!!" Yin Kuang yelled and took off running. The moment he bolted, a burst of gunfire struck the spot where he had just been standing, leaving bullet holes all over the ground and spraying mud and debris everywhere.
Fortunately, there was a corner here that shielded Yin Kuang from the barrage of bullets; otherwise, he would have been turned into a sieve long ago.
Nicholas, White Mouse, and Fox rushed out from the darkness, their cold faces filled with murderous intent!
"Where is he?" White Mouse cursed, "I'm going to blow them to bits!"
"Boss, there's only one person." Mori said, "I'm worried it's a trap!"
Nicholas said, "Chase! There's only him here!" He didn't elaborate, just took off in pursuit. Because the intelligence Nicholas received from the Umbrella Corporation supervisor indicated that he was alone, and as for the others, he didn't know where they had run off to. However, Nicholas intended to deal with this person in front of him first before going after the others!
With a shout, Nicholas was the first to dive around the corner.
Rat-tat-tat!!
Gunfire erupted.
"Quick, chase him! Don't let him get away!" White Mouse cursed angrily and gave chase as well.
"Fox, I keep feeling like something isn't right..."
"There's nothing to worry about," Fox said. "Trust the boss; he won't be wrong. Let's go, don't waste any more time."
And what of Yin Kuang?
He had just darted out of the alley and was sprinting for his life; he hadn't even made it ten meters when a bullet struck a car beside him, sending sparks flying. It forced him to roll behind another vehicle, crawl underneath the chassis, and then keep running!
Ding, ding, ding!!
Amidst the hail of bullets, if not for Yin Kuang using the abandoned vehicles on the road as cover and constantly changing his running route, he would have been riddled with bullets long ago.
Run! Run! Run faster!!
It was that same suffocating, icy chill from before! Yin Kuang felt as if his entire body had been plunged into an ice cellar; he was freezing, devoid of any warmth... especially his back, which felt as if countless ice needles were pricking it. It felt as if, at any moment, a rainstorm of bullets would slam into his back and end his life!
Yin Kuang bit down hard on his lower lip, letting the thick, metallic taste of blood fill his mouth to stimulate himself, constantly accelerating, sprinting with everything he had!!
"To hell with it! Go to hell!! Damn this University, damn the Headmaster, damn everything!!"
The more Yin Kuang thought about it, the more a surge of rage erupted from the depths of his heart! Yet, he forcefully suppressed that fury because he knew that once he activated the passive skill Raging Beast, his agility would decrease. If his speed dropped, then death would be all that awaited him!
I absolutely will not die! Even if I am destined to die, I will struggle until the very end!!
Behind Yin Kuang, the four mercenaries were angry but not chaotic; they maintained a specific formation even while in pursuit. Nicholas and Fox acted as the gunners, while White Mouse and Mori, even as they fired, kept a vigilant watch on their surroundings, guarding against sneak attacks from other "Chinese agents."
Boom!
A grenade landed not far in front of Nicholas and detonated violently, the powerful shockwave forcing the four of them to take cover immediately.
"Damn it! He actually has grenades!" White Mouse spat fiercely and said, "Daring to play with explosives in front of me! I've decided, I'm going to turn him into a human bomb later! I think that would be absolutely wonderful."
After throwing the grenade, Yin Kuang didn't even look back and continued to run forward!
Run! Run for his life!!
This was the only thing he had to do right now.
Even though a bullet had already struck his shoulder...
Gritting his teeth, eyes wide, fists clenched, he sprinted toward the three-story building that was drawing ever closer!
As long as he reached that place...
