Background / History

Family Poisoning and the Medusa Queen

Dugu Bo’s Jade Phosphorous Serpent martial soul lacked a proper organ or vessel for storing toxins, allowing its poison to damage his own body. The same hereditary problem afflicted his family. His son, Dugu Xin, and Dugu Yan’s mother died from the poison, leaving Dugu Bo and his granddaughter as the family’s remaining members 22 23.

After reaching level 90, he discovered the future site of his medicine garden while searching for his ninth soul ring. He defeated its guardian, a Medusa Queen with over 70,000 years of cultivation, through superior poison. Absorbing its ring and bone evolved his martial soul into the Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor, but the evolution remained incomplete. A subsequent toxin eruption caused him to lose consciousness and accidentally form a Poison Pill 24 26.

The garden’s environment helped suppress his condition, but did not cure it. By the time he met Su Ming, poison had spread into his marrow and throughout his body, having tormented him for over a decade 23 29.

Meeting Su Ming and Receiving Treatment

Dugu Yan brought Su Ming’s diagnosis to her grandfather after their Soul Arena match. Dugu Bo confirmed that she was poisoned and took her to Shrek Academy to seek a cure. He initially threatened Su Ming with poisonous mist, but stopped when Su Ming produced a lightning-attribute Soul Core capable of threatening his life. Dugu Yan mediated the confrontation, and Dugu Bo later apologized 21 22 23.

Dugu Bo brought Su Ming to his medicine garden in the Sunset Forest. Before revealing the herbs’ value and the site’s identity as the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, Su Ming required both grandfather and granddaughter to swear by their martial souls not to harm him 24.

Su Ming treated Dugu Bo with medicine, boxing and breathing exercises, acupuncture-assisted bloodletting, and Blood Vitality Pills. His complexion improved and the cold pain in his joints diminished. Su Ming also determined that his existing Poison Pill was merely an aggregate of toxins, rather than a properly functioning storage core 26.

Joining the Grand Xuan Sect

Su Ming offered access to the Soul Core Method on the condition that Dugu Bo join his newly founded Grand Xuan Sect. Dugu Bo accepted the position of Guardian Elder, becoming its third member alongside Su Ming and Wang Sheng. He also received a human-compatible pill-condensation method developed from research into his Poison Pill 27.

Choosing the Snake Pill Method, Dugu Bo entered seclusion and successfully concentrated his accumulated toxins into a proper pill. He emerged rejuvenated at level 94. At Su Ming’s request, he also became a guest elder at Shrek Academy while the Grand Xuan Sect’s existence remained unannounced 28 29 30.

Protector and Political Backer

Dugu Bo helped secure soul beasts for Dugu Yan, Su Ming, and Wang Sheng. He captured an 8,000-year-old Cold Poison Scale Dragon Lizard for his granddaughter, protected Su Ming during his ten-thousand-year Thunder Hell Vine absorption, and helped capture an 8,000-year-old Magma Earth-Splitting Tiger for Wang Sheng 30 31 32 40.

When Su Ming negotiated with the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect, Dugu Bo followed their agreed plan: if the delegation threatened Su Ming, he would fly to their sect headquarters and pressure them there. His threat to wipe out the sect if Su Ming was harmed made his poison a deterrent beyond direct combat with other Titled Douluo 37 72.

He later reached level 95 while fighting Chrysanthemum Douluo, then brought Su Ming to meet him at Dugu Manor. During the journey to Martial Soul City, Dugu Bo followed Su Ming’s group discreetly as protection and met with Chrysanthemum Douluo and Ghost Douluo 50 72.

Personality

Dugu Bo is fiercely protective of Dugu Yan. He offers to deal with anyone who bullies her and is willing to accept that his own condition may remain incurable if hers can be resolved. His inability to save her parents weighs heavily on him, particularly when Su Ming reveals methods that might have prevented their deaths 21 22 23 26.

His pride and temper make him threatening during their first negotiations, but he can acknowledge fault and cooperate. He recognizes Su Ming’s attempt to recruit him as a powerful backer, accepts it openly, and later exchanges affectionate “Old Monster” and “Little Monster” banter with him 23 27 28 31.

His concern eventually extends to Su Ming himself. He worries through Su Ming’s two-day disappearance into the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, warns him about ten-thousand-year soul rings, and stands ready to interrupt a dangerous absorption 28 30 32.
