Background
The Sharingan is the hereditary ocular power of the Uchiha clan. Within the clan, it is revered as a source of power, social standing, and personal worth; failing to awaken it can lead to feelings of shame and exclusion. Its known basic functions include insight, copying, hypnotic genjutsu, and the ability to perceive chakra flow. 1 2 15
Awakening requires three recorded conditions: Uchiha lineage, sufficient chakra, and extreme emotional stimulation. Pain, rage, love, hatred, loss, and near-death experiences can cause the brain to produce Sharingan chakra and trigger the transformation. Greater chakra reserves can support more tomoe at the moment of awakening. 7 23 31 87
Kazuhiko develops a psychological-treatment method that combines realistic genjutsu with emotional stimulation to induce awakening without actual physical tragedy. His treatment brings Shota from no Sharingan to three tomoe, prompting the Uchiha elders to classify the procedure as an S-rank secret. 29 32
The Uchiha regard Sharingan handling as taboo. Eyes recovered from deceased clan members are preserved for transplantation and for secret techniques that consume ocular power; theft of Sharingan is treated as a grave threat to the clan. 108
Appearance
When activated, the Sharingan changes the user's pupils into a scarlet red, with black tomoe rotating around the iris. Increased ocular power can make the red coloration brighter and cause a faint glow in darkness. 15 72
- Single tomoe — One black tomoe appears in each scarlet pupil. 15
- Double tomoe — Two symmetrical tomoe rotate within each pupil. 21 31
- Three tomoe — Three tomoe provide the standard highest documented non-Mangekyō state. 32 83
- Mangekyō Sharingan — An advanced form associated with unique ocular techniques and severe ocular-power consumption. 93 108
Abilities & Skills
Insight and Chakra Perception
The Sharingan grants heightened visual processing and perception of chakra movement.
- Sees high-speed movement, hand-seal sequences, and chakra flow. 15
- Predicts simple attack trajectories at the Single-Tomoe stage; higher tomoe enable increasingly complex prediction chains in combat. 15 84
- Allows the user to see through low-level genjutsu, while perfected higher stages can resist mid- to high-level genjutsu. 15 21 81
- Kazuhiko's Perfect Three-Tomoe Sharingan allows him to read and counter Shisui's taijutsu movements despite Shisui's extreme speed. 83
Ninjutsu Replication
By observing an opponent's casting movements, the Sharingan can copy ninjutsu.
- The Single-Tomoe Sharingan can copy ninjutsu after observing its casting process. 15
- Perfect Double-Tomoe and Perfect Three-Tomoe forms can replicate high-level ninjutsu. 21 81
- Kazuhiko copies Shisui's Fire Style: Great Dragon Fire Technique and reproduces its power accurately. 84
- The Uchiha's copying ability is restricted by Konoha's Secret Technique Protection Order, which specifically prohibits Sharingan users from learning or copying protected clan techniques. 39
Sharingan Genjutsu
The Sharingan enables genjutsu through eye contact and amplifies illusion techniques.
- Uchiha users ordinarily do not require hand seals to cast Sharingan genjutsu. 3
- The Uchiha's Exclusive Genjutsu Seal can further amplify Sharingan genjutsu against stronger opponents. 3 10
- Kazuhiko uses Sharingan-enhanced hypnosis to maintain an elaborate, realistic illusion on Shota even after Shota awakens his own eye. 29 31
- Kazuhiko's B-rank Hypnotic Illusion overwhelms Shisui despite Shisui having an active Three-Tomoe Sharingan and advance warning. 84
Ocular Power
Ocular power determines the strength and endurance of Sharingan techniques and is portrayed as an innate Uchiha talent rather than something gained solely through training.
- Strong ocular power allows longer, more potent Sharingan genjutsu. 30
- Fugaku and Shisui are identified as exceptional Uchiha partly because of their unusually powerful eyes. 30
- Dōjutsu entries such as Kamui, Life Succession, and Underworld Gaze further increase Kazuhiko's ocular power. 72 80
- Excessive use of high-level ocular techniques can damage vision and permanently reduce ocular power. 81 102
Mangekyō Sharingan
The Mangekyō is a legendary advanced Sharingan stage generally associated with profound emotional trauma, unique dōjutsu, and Susanoo. 1 2 38 93
- Its techniques differ between users; documented examples include Kotoamatsukami, Tsukuyomi, Amaterasu, and Kamui. 34
- Mangekyō use consumes ocular power and can eventually cause permanent blindness. 93 108
- The Uchiha stone tablet records that killing a person closest to the user can awaken the Mangekyō. 93
- Transplanting a close relative's Mangekyō is said to create an Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan that does not lose its light. 93
Kamui
Kamiui is Kazuhiko's documented Mangekyō space-time dōjutsu. 72 101
- Distorts space to transport matter. 72
- Grants access to a personal Kamui dimension. 72
- Can sense dimensional entrances through spatial resonance. 72
- Is used to instantly kill Orochimaru and injure the Fourth Raikage. 101
- Its heavy ocular-power burden contributes to lasting damage when overused. 102
Life Succession
Life Succession is a Mangekyō dōjutsu entry drawn from Fugaku's pool. 80
- Comprehensively strengthens Sharingan abilities, including dōjutsu, genjutsu, and hypnosis. 80
- Enhances recovery and physical constitution. 80
- Doubles the user's chakra. 80
Underworld Gaze
Underworld Gaze is a Mangekyō dōjutsu that performs an “underworld prophecy” by consuming ocular power. 80
- Simulates a target's timeline until their death, then reveals the scene of that death. 81
- Can be used on the caster to glimpse their own future. 81
- Its consumption rises with the target's lifespan or the scope of the prophecy. 81
- Repeated use causes bleeding from the eyes, declining ocular power, and deteriorating vision. 81
Susanoo
Susanoo is the ultimate ocular technique associated with the Mangekyō Sharingan and is regarded as a symbol of Uchiha invincibility. 2
- It normally requires Mangekyō Sharingan activation. 2
- Shisui's exclusive ocular-power trait permits Susanoo activation with only one Mangekyō eye. 2
- Fugaku confirms that Susanoo is recorded as an advanced Mangekyō ocular technique on the Uchiha stone tablet. 93
Story Role / Major Arcs
Shota's Eye-Awakening Treatment
Shota's inability to awaken the Sharingan begins as the central problem of Kazuhiko's clinic. Kazuhiko uses psychological diagnosis and genjutsu to target Shota's fear of inadequacy and attachment to his family. 1 7
The resulting illusion forces Shota to experience the apparent deaths of his sister and mother. The emotional shock awakens his Single-Tomoe, then Double-Tomoe, and finally Three-Tomoe Sharingan. 29 31 32
Kazuhiko's Rapid Advancement
Kazuhiko initially awakens a Single-Tomoe Sharingan through a Deep Blue entry, then advances through entry fusion rather than conventional emotional trauma. His eyes progress into Perfect Double-Tomoe and Perfect Three-Tomoe forms, granting exceptional prediction, copying, and genjutsu capabilities. 15 21 81 85
Mangekyō Revelation
Kazuhiko equips Kamui before formally meeting its Mangekyō fixation condition, using his unusually powerful Sharingan to test the technique. His Mangekyō-level space-time ability becomes publicly evident when he saves Tsunade and kills Orochimaru. 72 101 103
Uchiha Secrets and Eye Preservation
Fugaku later reveals the Uchiha's reserve of preserved eyes, maintained for transplantation and secret techniques. The disappearance of six pairs of Sharingan from two Uchiha squads becomes a major clan concern and motivates an investigation into Kumogakure. 108
Trivia
- Kazuhiko describes the Sharingan as “a mirror into the deepest parts of an Uchiha's heart,” rather than merely an eye for insight, copying, or hypnosis. 38
- A Three-Tomoe Sharingan can decipher the ordinary level of the Uchiha stone tablet, while Mangekyō and Eternal Mangekyō users can access deeper content. 93
- Kazuhiko's Perfect Three-Tomoe Sharingan is evaluated as capable of contending with a Mangekyō. 81
