Background / History
Amegakure is the hidden village of the Land of Rain, a country defined by near-constant precipitation. Its rain strengthens local Water Style techniques, creating an environmental advantage against invaders while hindering Fire and Earth Style users. 27
Under Hanzo of the Salamander, Amegakure expanded its influence through the Small Nations Alliance. At the beginning of the year, Hanzo secured an alliance with the Land of Fields; Kidoyun of the Tsuchigumo Clan subsequently served as an elite Amegakure jōnin. 15
Amegakure also gained control over the Land of Fang, formerly a Konoha vassal, and its strategically valuable sugar industry. The village's operatives emptied the Land of Fang refinery and removed its equipment, turning a resource dispute into a major escalation with Konoha. 14 15
During Konoha's covert operation to acquire Salamander toxin samples, Amegakure was infiltrated by Orochimaru's team. Uchiha Sakuya created a large-scale fire diversion inside the village, allowing Orochimaru and Dan Katō to seize toxin research materials, live Salamanders, and laboratory data. 32 33 34
The operation culminated in Sakuya's rescue of Tsunade from Amegakure forces. His newly awakened Amaterasu engulfed parts of the village in black flames that could not be extinguished by water, leaving Amegakure nearly destroyed and driving Hanzo into fury. 36 37 41
Environment and Security
- Amegakure lies within the perpetually rainy Land of Rain; rainfall ranges from drizzle to torrential downpour, and clear skies are rare. 27
- The rain amplifies Water Style techniques, allowing even ordinary techniques to produce unusually powerful waves. 27
- The village admits merchants from smaller nations, particularly because Hanzo's alliance-building increased trade activity. 27
- Its gate security checks travel permits, while its plazas and streets are monitored for suspicious behavior. 27
- Shota Senju's body was displayed publicly as both a deterrent and bait to expose infiltrators or spies. 27
- Amegakure maintained an underground research facility for studying Hanzo's Salamander toxin and held live Salamanders for experimentation. 31 34
- During Hanzo's campaign in the Land of Wind, much of Amegakure's elite force was absent; the village's remaining defenders were primarily genin and chūnin, with relatively few jōnin. 34
Political Structure
Hanzo's Faction
Hanzo is recognized by many Amegakure shinobi as the village's Rain Shadow. His supporters form the larger, militaristic faction and include shinobi associated with gas masks, reflecting the danger of Salamander toxin. 29 30
- Supports Hanzo's wars and the Small Nations Alliance. 15 29
- Uses poison warfare and research into the Salamander's toxin. 26
- Fielded forces from Amegakure and allied small nations against Konoha. 34 50
Akatsuki Chamber of Commerce
The Akatsuki Chamber of Commerce is a powerful merchant guild operating independently of Hanzo's direct command. It is led by Sakuya Yamanashi, known as the Azure Dragon. 30
- Yamanashi was an exceptional Amegakure Ninja Academy graduate and once viewed by Hanzo as a protégé. 30
- Rather than become a shinobi, he became a merchant; Hanzo nevertheless preserved his ninja status and granted him privileges to trade freely. 30
- The organization developed into a major enterprise in the Land of Rain and possesses an intelligence network capable of identifying Konoha infiltrators. 30 31
- Akatsuki provided Sakuya and Tsunade with the location and key to Amegakure's toxin research facility, suggesting it was not openly hostile to the Konoha team. 31
Military Capabilities
Water Style Warfare
Amegakure shinobi exploit their climate to strengthen Water Style techniques. The rain provides abundant water and can greatly increase the scale and force of their attacks. 27
- Water dragons and water screens were used to pressure Konoha forces during the renewed Second Shinobi World War. 50
- Heavy rain suppresses enemy Fire Style and compromises Earth Style techniques. 27
- Water alone proved ineffective against Amaterasu, which instead ignited the water it touched. 37
Salamander Toxin
Hanzo's summoned Salamander produces poison dangerous enough that even Hanzo and Amegakure shinobi wear gas masks around it. 26
- The toxin affects allies and enemies indiscriminately, making an antidote necessary even for the Small Nations Alliance. 26
- Amegakure used Salamander toxin on corpses, including Shota's, to prevent recovery attempts. 35
- Exposure left Tsunade severely weakened and unable to escape the village without rescue. 35
- Konoha ultimately acquired toxin samples and research data to develop a countermeasure. 34 40
Allied Secret Techniques
Amegakure's forces include shinobi from several small nations, bringing numerous obscure and specialized techniques into the village's defenses. 31 34
- Tsuchigumo Clan techniques — Kidoyun and other clan members used web attacks and Spider Sticky Gold, a golden material formed into armor and projectile weapons. 18 19
- Poison-mist operations — Rain shinobi fought amid toxic air while equipped with gas masks, forcing enemies without protection to retreat quickly. 18
- Numerical pursuit tactics — Amegakure repeatedly used groups of shinobi to surround isolated infiltrators, particularly during Tsunade's attempted escape. 35
Relationships
- Hanzo of the Salamander — Rain Shadow and Amegakure's dominant military leader; his wars and poison shape the village's strategy. 26 30
- Small Nations Alliance — Amegakure serves as its center, gathering forces from villages and countries such as Kusagakure and Takigakure. 34
- Land of Fields — Allied with Amegakure through a pact between its daimyo and Hanzo; Tsuchigumo Clan shinobi entered Amegakure service through this alliance. 15
- Land of Fang — Brought under Amegakure's control along with its sugar industry, despite previously being aligned with Konoha. 15
- Akatsuki Chamber of Commerce — Influential internal merchant faction with its own intelligence network and special privileges under Hanzo. 30 31
- Konohagakure — Primary enemy during the conflict over the Land of Fang, the Salamander toxin operation, and the Second Shinobi World War. 15 34 50
- Iwagakure — Backed Amegakure's war effort, allowing the Small Nations Alliance to take the lead while Iwagakure suffered comparatively lower losses. 41 47
- Sunagakure — Fought alongside Konoha against Amegakure after the Salamander toxin was neutralized. 47 50
