Background / History
Oil-Guy first appears among the early recruits of Era 40k: Mecha under the ID [Mechanicus Oil-Lover on the Run]. He immediately evaluates the game's unusually sophisticated rendering and machine designs, judging the technology to be of unknown origin despite its lack of conventional Mechanicus ornamentation 3.
After the players are captured on Aurelian IV, he helps establish that their situation is real rather than simulated. He identifies the captors' modified lasguns and flak armor, then assesses the Alru Group's likely interest in undocumented captives: human experimentation, organ harvesting, genetic sampling, drug trials, augmentation, and possible sale to the Mechanicus 11 12.
At Alru No. 3 Refinery, Oil-Guy becomes a central source of technical and setting analysis. He investigates workers' knowledge of the Imperium, explains the tactical cooperation of Chaos forces, identifies military hardware, and calculates the players' recovered loot during the refinery uprising 17 27 30 34.
When Crimson Dawn forms, he creates Crimson Machine, the faction's technical and logistical chapter. Its members study mechanics, electronics, engineering, programming, Imperial technology, and bodily augmentation; under his direction, they modify transport vehicles and develop the base's technical capacity 43 44.
Oil-Guy later argues that Crimson Dawn cannot rely on gradual growth alone. His calculations project that the faction would need roughly six months to confront a standard Alru infantry regiment, while the threat environment allows no more than about three months of safe development; he therefore supports accelerating Wang Zhong's transformation into an Astartes 58.
Following five days of mining and construction, he replaces both arms and his left eye with advanced prosthetics. Crimson Machine develops modified assault tractors, engineering mechs, homemade energy weapons, enhanced ammunition, and widespread partial augmentation among its members 65.
When the Iron Hands investigate Crimson Dawn Base, Oil-Guy assumes the identity of Cage Lawrence, presenting himself as the settlement's founder and a self-taught mechanical hobbyist. He meets Ferrus Manus aboard the Steel Fist, secures a conditional offer of legal status for Crimson Dawn, and agrees to provide technical documents, aid reconstruction, restore order, and report unusual activity to the Legion 102 103.
Appearance
Oil-Guy's extensive self-modification gives him a distinctly cybernetic appearance.
- Both arms are silver-gray mechanical prosthetics with interchangeable precision-tool fingertips 65.
- His left eye is a mechanical prosthetic that displays pale-blue data streams and scans physical statistics 65.
- Later upgrades add hydraulic tubing, sensor arrays, a small plasma cutter, and precision pincers to his right arm 89 102.
- His servo motors and mechanical eye emit soft mechanical sounds and blue light during operation 65 73.
Personality
Oil-Guy is methodical, technically obsessive, and strongly analytical. In dangerous situations, he habitually responds by identifying equipment, modeling risks, cross-referencing lore, or calculating resources rather than panicking 11 27 58.
He is willing to embrace augmentation and explicitly frames mechanization as liberation from biological limitation: “The weakness of flesh, the ascension of machinery” 65. However, his interest in technology can make him impulsive in acquisition; he purchases all five monthly system curiosities for 2.23 million Imperial Coins, including a damaged magical-girl transformation device he cannot repair 90.
Despite his detached manner, he is committed to Crimson Dawn's survival. He supports Wang Zhong's leadership, provides sober warnings about food and housing shortages, and faces Ferrus Manus directly to protect the settlement's future 59 89 103.
Abilities & Skills
Mechanical Engineering and Modification
Oil-Guy specializes in mechanical systems, vehicle conversion, cybernetic integration, and reverse-engineering.
- Founded Crimson Machine as Crimson Dawn's technical and logistical branch 43.
- Led modifications to transport vehicles, adding roof-mounted machine-gun positions, side armor, off-road tires, trailers, and field supplies 60.
- Modified assault tractors with additional armor and heavy weapons 65.
- Helped create crude engineering mechs from abandoned mining-pit mechanical arms 65.
- Reverse-engineered shop weapons sufficiently to develop homemade energy weapons and enhanced ammunition, though materials and energy constraints prevent exact replication 65.
- Upgraded Crimson Dawn Base's gate security system and linked its sensors to his visual interface 98.
Cybernetic Augmentation
Oil-Guy has heavily augmented his own body and encourages Crimson Machine recruits not to reject bodily modification.
- Both arms and his left eye are mechanical prosthetics 65.
- His prosthetic hands can deploy multiple tool attachments for technical work 65.
- His upgraded right arm includes a plasma cutter, precision pincers, hydraulic tubing, and sensor arrays 89 102.
- His modifications are advanced enough to draw Ferrus Manus and Karon's attention during the Iron Hands' assessment of Crimson Dawn 103.
Psionic Ability
Oil-Guy is a Formal-rank psyker by the time of Crimson Dawn's development meeting.
- Can participate in rotating psionic watch duty alongside Holy Blood and other formal psykers 90.
- Insists that psykers learn shielding methods before training, citing the danger posed by Heluowei's uncontrolled awakening 90.
Technical and Strategic Analysis
Oil-Guy routinely converts battlefield observations and incomplete intelligence into practical plans.
- Identified the players' captors' equipment and assessed their augmentation level 11.
- Determined that Alru's likely use for the captured players included illegal experiments and forced augmentation 12.
- Explained the tactical behavior of Tzeentch and Khorne forces during the refinery conflict 27 31.
- Identified heavy self-propelled artillery and correctly concluded that Alru intended to level the industrial zone 34.
- Produced Crimson Dawn's comprehensive combat-power assessment before the three-town operation 73.
- Assessed the troop deployments of Aurelian IV's major powers using reconnaissance intelligence 90.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Mechanical prosthetic arms with interchangeable tool attachments 65.
- Mechanical prosthetic eye with data-scanning capability 65.
- Shop-purchased data-slate used for scanning, recording, and technical notes 42.
- Holographic projector used to present combat-power and strategic assessments 73.
- Five monthly curiosities purchased for research:
Relationships
- Wang Zhong — Core Crimson Dawn ally and leader whom Oil-Guy supports through strategic analysis, Astartes-transformation planning, base defense work, and the Iron Hands cover operation 59 60 73 102.
- Xue Brother — Fellow core member and collaborator in Crimson Dawn's planning; both are entrusted with holding the base while Wang Zhong leads expeditions 60 65.
- Tax Brother — Fellow player and core officer; frequently present during Oil-Guy's technical discussions and strategic meetings 42 57 90.
- Ferrus Manus — Iron Hands Primarch who interrogates Oil-Guy under the Cage Lawrence identity, then offers Crimson Dawn conditional legal status and a role serving the Imperium 103.
- Sergis — Iron Hands captain who first questions Oil-Guy at Crimson Dawn Base and escorts him to the Steel Fist 102 103.
- Crimson Machine members — Technical chapter personnel whom Oil-Guy recruits around mechanical study, engineering, and acceptance of augmentation 43 65.
