Background / History

Shadow Demons are manifestations of disorder between Yin and Yang. Sect teachings attribute their emergence to the chaos that followed The Emperor's death: every living being who cultivates contains a Shadow Demon, which never fully ceases to exist while its host lives 3.

During a cultivator's breakthrough, a Heart Demon first attacks the Dao heart through temptation, resentment, and chaos. It may then separate from the cultivator and manifest physically as a Shadow Demon, attempting to take control of the host's body 5 46. Cultivators whose bodies are usurped become demons themselves; many dangerous demons originated in failed breakthroughs 3.

Yu Xiu later concludes that Shadow Demons are not merely a consequence of The Emperor's death, but part of the world's recurring process of purging its own impurities. In this view, the demon's evil and turbid nature is removed upon death, leaving behind condensed spiritual essence 69. He foresees an era ten thousand years in the future in which Shadow Demons flourish and dominate the world for 129,600 years unless that cycle is reversed 69.

Forms and Manifestations

Shadow Demons do not possess a single fixed body.

• Breakthrough-born Shadow Demons manifest as another version of their host, with the same appearance and cultivation base. They may wield the host's martial arts, though exceptionally rapid advancement can leave them behind the host's current “version” 5 47.
• Possessing Shadow Demons occupy human bodies after usurpation. Their demonic aura can be tightly concealed, making them nearly indistinguishable from ordinary cultivators without exceptional spiritual perception 25 48.
• Naturally born Shadow Demons arise in dark and filthy places of the world. They can hide their aura from ordinary sight and may develop forms tied to their environment, such as water-bodied demons at Tantan Lake or a stone golem that called itself the Mountain God 23 35 68.
• Shadow Demons tethered to cultivators are influenced by human nature and can retain an additional portion of human memory; Yu Xiu's first manifested demon notably lacked his past-life knowledge and system-related memories 5 69.
