Background

Yuan Tiankuo was stationed at the Earth-Fire Abyss, where he contemplated the sword intent within Ancestor Linyuan's Abyss-Suppressing Sword. After three months, he had only formed a connection to that intent and expected that forging a Sword Heart through it would require roughly another year. 32

When Yu Xiu was assigned to the abyss, Yuan initially regarded him with reserve. Yu Xiu's immediate resonance with the Abyss-Suppressing Sword—and subsequent manifestation of a Sword Heart—astonished him, as Yuan had considered himself a gifted disciple with ambitions of becoming a true disciple. 32

Yuan guarded Yu Xiu during his ten-day comprehension, killing each Fire Demon that emerged from the underground fire veins. Though irritated at being seen as Yu Xiu's protector, he ultimately chose to support him and later gave him unused Five-Viscera Treasure Light Pills. 32

He secretly accompanied Yu Xiu to Guiping County on Su Wenjin's orders, prepared to suppress a Shadow Demon beyond Yu Xiu's realm if necessary. Yu Xiu's slaying of the Water Demon instead left Yuan unable to understand the junior disciple's swordsmanship or the extent of his Sword Heart. 33 37

At Ram Horn Mountain, Yuan worked with Lu Shizhang to eliminate Wan Chuan and the surrounding Shadow Demons. He intercepted Wan Chuan's attempt to seize Yu Xiu, contributed to destroying the demon's true form, and later gave Yu Xiu the collected monster materials and a storage bag. 52 53
