Background / History

Following the defeat of Martial Soul Hall by Shrek Academy, the Heaven Dou Empire, and the Star Luo Empire, the former order of free Martial Soul awakenings and assistance for civilian soul masters disappeared. The three empires continued to praise Tang San as the figure who “saved” the continent, while noble interests became dominant. 1 3

The Heaven Dou Empire later split into the Heaven Dou Empire and the Dou Ling Empire; together with the Star Luo Empire, these states form the Douluo Three Kingdoms. 74

Around six thousand years after Tang San’s ascension, the Sun Moon Continent collided with the Douluo Continent. The resulting conflict placed Star Luo under immense military pressure and ultimately led to the Sun Moon Empire’s attempted annexation of the Three Kingdoms. 15 102

Constituent States and Internal Politics

The Douluo Three Kingdoms consist of the following states:

• Star Luo Empire — The strongest of the Three Kingdoms in comprehensive national strength and the state geographically closest to the Sun Moon Empire. It is comparatively more receptive to Soul Tool development than the other two kingdoms. 7 21 92 95
• Heaven Dou Empire — A successor state of the original Heaven Dou Empire. It possesses strong high-level soul-master support through the Body Sect, including the Level 98 Super Douluo Du Busi. 21 85 95
• Dou Ling Empire — The other successor state of the Heaven Dou Empire. It is portrayed as especially conservative and hostile toward Soul Tools. 74 92

Star Luo is ruled by the Xu Clan, also known as the Star Crown Sect, rather than the former White Tiger Dai Clan. During the prior Sun Moon invasion, the Dai Clan’s imperial line had dwindled after generations of border warfare, and the then-White Tiger Emperor voluntarily ceded the throne to the Xu Clan. In exchange, the Dai family retained the hereditary title of White Tiger Duke, along with its military authority and fief. 102

Despite their outward coexistence, the Xu and Dai Clans remain divided by unresolved questions of legitimacy. The Dai Clan retains control of much of Star Luo’s military and is suspected of desiring the return of the throne, while the Xu Clan fears the consequences of losing power. 102

Emperor Xu Jiawei and Princess Xu Jiujiu are particularly concerned that a Sun Moon Empire victory in the Soul Fighting Tournament would damage Star Luo’s prestige and worsen its domestic political position. Xu Jiujiu therefore considers ruthless schemes, including covertly using spiritual-type soul masters to manipulate Shrek participants into injuring Sun Moon competitors. 102

Society and Governance

The Three Kingdoms are depicted as societies where nobles, royals, and major sects hold opportunity and influence, while commoners face severe barriers to advancement.

During an earlier war, the Three Kingdoms’ forces used Tang Sect hidden weapons but were unable to match the Sun Moon Empire’s Soul Tool technology. Shrek Academy’s headmaster ultimately assembled nearly sixty Title Douluo from across the continent; these experts assumed command and defeated the Sun Moon Empire. 4 74

• The defeat forced the Sun Moon Empire to surrender and sign unequal treaties. 74

Story Role / Major Arcs

Zhong Kui’s departure

Zhong Kui leaves the Three Kingdoms for the Sun Moon Empire because he sees little future for commoners under their noble-dominated system. He conceals his wider objectives during a border interrogation, stating that he seeks entry to the Royal Soul Guidance Academy to become stronger. 7

Zhong Kui later states that he has no attachment to the Three Kingdoms because his family received no meaningful support from their system. He accepts the possibility of Sun Moon annexation so long as ordinary people can live safely and with greater opportunity. 20

Opposition to Sun Moon development

The Three Kingdoms are repeatedly contrasted with the Sun Moon Empire’s Soul Tool technology, free awakenings, and education. Their reliance on Tang Sect hidden weapons and resistance to Soul Tool development are presented as strategic weaknesses. 4 8 15 64

Although Star Luo has begun to recognize the value of Soul Tools, the Heaven Dou and Dou Ling Empires remain particularly resistant to technological development. Sun Moon personnel regard this conservatism and continued exploitation of commoners as a reason the Three Kingdoms will eventually be unable to resist the Sun Moon Empire. 92

Soul Fighting Tournament

The Three Kingdoms and Shrek Academy are longstanding rivals of the Sun Moon Empire in the Soul Fighting Tournament. According to the narrative, numerous outstanding Sun Moon participants have been secretly killed by parties from the Three Kingdoms or Shrek, while Shrek has repeatedly dominated the competition. 25

The current tournament is hosted in the Star Luo Empire. Its royal family considers the event politically vital, since defeat to the Sun Moon Empire would strengthen their rival’s momentum and undermine Star Luo’s standing. 16 102

Shrek’s competitors identify the Sun Moon Empire as their most dangerous tournament opponent. They note that its competitors are protected by incomplete intelligence, powerful Soul Tools, and Zhong Kui, who is rumored to be capable of directly contending with a Soul Saint. 125

Star Luo–Clear Sky Sect maneuvering

Star Luo’s ruling Xu Clan has no meaningful current alliance with the Clear Sky Sect, despite the sect’s historical connection to the former Dai imperial dynasty. The Clear Sky Sect did not participate in the war in which Shrek gathered Title Douluo to repel the Sun Moon Empire. 104

Xu Jiujiu consequently considers using the Clear Sky Sect as a disposable force against the Sun Moon Empire before relying on the Heaven Dou Empire and the Body Sect to finish the conflict. 104
