The ancient Eldar Empire occupied the center of the galaxy and most of its territory. Even humanity at its peak had only established a loosely united power in one corner of the galaxy. Though vast and threatening in its own right, it was still far inferior.

Yet the ancient Eldar Empire ignored humanity's growth, not because they still believed ancient humanity posed no threat, but because they simply could not be bothered with such matters.

Indulgence and pleasure were the dominant themes of society. The acts born of such excess were pushed to such absurd extremes that low-sensation creatures like humans could never have conceived of them, no matter how far they pushed their limits.

At the Empire's fringes, some outcasts believed the Eldar were inevitably headed for decline, that unrestrained indulgence would surely bring ruin. They left the Empire, created roaming worlds called Craftworlds, and began to wander.
