Background / History

Root operates as Konoha’s shadow organization, established and led by Shimura Danzō to handle matters that cannot be brought into the open. Although formally known as the Anbu Training Department and placed under Anbu jurisdiction, it has effectively become a separate organization with its own intelligence network, underground facilities, personnel system, and command structure 11 49 85.

The organization recruits both officially affiliated personnel and unofficial operatives. Hiroya, a Ninja Academy administrator connected to Danzō, recruits academy-linked personnel for Root; Senkaku Byakuya entered through this unofficial system after registering as a genin 4 29 69. Byakuya’s parents had likewise been unofficial Root ninja, publicly registered as Konoha chūnin despite possessing special jōnin-level strength 69.

Many children raised directly by Root are war orphans trained solely to kill and execute missions. Danzō considers these emotionally deprived operatives useful tools but unfit to inherit or lead the organization 64. Root personnel are taught that they are Konoha’s “roots”: they have no past or future and exist to execute missions for the village’s protection 85.

Leadership

Intelligence and Surveillance

Root maintains extensive intelligence channels throughout Konoha and abroad. It monitors academy personnel, village factions, foreign movements, and strategic threats; its reach is described as spreading throughout Konoha 36.

• Recruited Izumi Orange to monitor Hiroya on the Third Hokage’s orders before assigning her to Root missions 11 36.
• Received foreign intelligence through spies and summoned intermediaries, including reports from Sunagakure 64.

Assassination and Covert Action

Root assigns missions intended to leave no public trace. Byakuya’s early Root assignment required him to eliminate the Sunagakure spy San-Dan-Kun without alerting the Konoha Border Guard 18.

Relationship with Konoha

Root is officially subordinate to the Anbu and, by extension, Konoha’s leadership. In practice, it operates with substantial independence under Danzō, who maintains separate personnel, intelligence, strategic objectives, and clandestine projects 49 85.

Sarutobi Hiruzen is aware of many of Danzō’s schemes, including Root’s activities and Danzō’s collaboration with Orochimaru, but does not always expose them openly 65. Hiruzen also retains authority over senior Root appointments: he approves Byakuya’s advancement to Root squad leader after reviewing his service record 85.

Danzō’s ambitions create tension within Konoha’s leadership. His wartime achievements could strengthen his claim to the Hokage position, but Root’s accomplishments are difficult to publicize because of their clandestine nature 88.

Philosophy

Root personnel are conditioned to prioritize Konoha above individual identity, emotion, and personal history. Its stated doctrine is that its members are the roots sustaining Konoha’s tree and must be willing to sacrifice their lives for the village 85.

“We are the roots of Konoha. For the sake of this towering tree that is Konoha, we do not hesitate to sacrifice our lives. We have no past, no future; we have only the execution of missions.” 85

Danzō distinguishes between Root’s mission-trained tools and a true successor. He believes an heir must possess judgment, emotional capacity, and the ability to lead the organization’s hidden work rather than merely obey orders 27 64.
