The Vaati, also known as vaati, were an ancient and mysterious race and the undisputed rulers of the Elemental Plane of Air. Their numbers were not particularly great, but every member of their race possessed the ability to command other air elemental beings. Thus, they were also known as the Dukes of Wind!
This race was rarely seen throughout the multiverse; few had ever truly encountered them. They generally operated only within the Elemental Plane of Air and seldom appeared elsewhere. Thus, aside from mages capable of traveling the Elemental Plane of Air, most people had only heard of this ancient and powerful race in legends.
Among the legends concerning the Vaati, the most famous was their feat of crushing the entire Obyrith demon race.
This began with the Queen of Chaos launching the Second Great Chaos Invasion. At the time, the Queen of Chaos used a surprise attack to eliminate the former Obyrith demon prince, the insect prince Obox-ob, thereby establishing her undisputed rule over the Abyss in one stroke.
It was also after that that mortals began appearing throughout the multiverse and flourished. With the emergence of mortals, the souls of chaotic evil mortals inevitably entered the Abyss, and the Queen of Chaos took notice of the Abyss's new inhabitants. The Queen of Chaos and several other Obyriths attempted to corrupt these souls, eventually creating a new kind of demon—the Tanar'ri.
The first Tanar'ri, Demogorgon, born from primal fear, was considered a failure at the time. He was an unspeakably ugly monster with serpentine long arms, two baboon-like heads, reptilian legs, and a twisted tail. The Queen of Chaos discarded this failed creation without hesitation and continued her other transformations.
