But the Sons of Solam were not truly tools. They had emotions and minds of their own. So those who did not want to leave still refused Solam. In the end, only Sanguinius and Vulkan were willing to leave with him.
(Really, Sanguinius and Black Uncle Vulkan were my favorites in Warhammer. Even though there were few stories about them, I liked them whenever I saw them. There was no particular reason. On the other hand, I wasn't interested in that gay Thirteenth Prince Guilliman at all. Out of all the primarchs, Guilliman would probably rank last for me. Oh, and I also liked that cocky guy.)
Solam felt a little disappointed, but also a little happy. In short, his feelings were complicated. Perhaps this was what parents felt the first time their children acted according to their own wishes—heartbroken at their departure, yet gratified by their growth.
So, during those three years, Solam spent as much time with them as he could. It was both compensation and a way to make up for his own sense of loss.
In any case, the more time Solam spent with the children, the more reluctant he became to leave.
When that feeling grew ever stronger, Solam knew it was time to go.
Today, three years later, Solam finally made up his mind.

"Is it finally beginning?" Unlike Solam, Queen Laeral Silverhand loathed the Abyss beyond measure. She had no attachment to this place whatsoever, only profound disgust and relief at being free of it.
