No one had ever truly possessed it. Nor had anyone ever truly destroyed it.
The Crystal Shard had been forged from the hardest, most evil gem in the multiverse, making it virtually impervious to any damage. Legend said that it could only be destroyed by seven high-level good liches and a powerful good deity, provided they could rediscover the original creation ritual and reverse it. However, doing so would destroy all the high-level liches and drive away that deity.
However, this method was not very realistic. First of all, the ritual used to create the Crystal Shard had already been lost.
The seven liches who had created this artifact had been drained dry by the Crystal Shard on the spot, reduced to ashes. And Errtu, the only surviving tanar'ri demon lord who had participated in its creation, had also been killed in the years that followed.
(Errtu had been present and participated in the creation of the Crystal Shard. However, at the instant the Crystal Shard was completed, it deliberately triggered a massive explosion. Taking advantage of the blast, it stole the magical power that sustained the liches' immortality and blasted Errtu back into the Abyss. In the years afterward, Errtu relentlessly pursued this artifact while desperately concealing this secret, until someone eventually cut him down.)
Second, high-level good liches were simply too rare. Liches were undead creatures inherently associated with evil, so finding even one good lich among them was incredibly difficult. Even neutral liches were uncommon. The odds of gathering seven good liches were so low as to be nonexistent. (Maybe gathering seven good liches could summon a dragon, for all anyone knew.)
Thus, destroying the Crystal Shard was basically impossible. Perhaps only a powerful good deity could destroy this evil artifact, but even if the Crystal Shard
