Before the soldier could speak, Marco heard a tremendous commotion!
"Dragons! Dragons! Dragons!"
At the edge of the city, countless people began running about like headless flies. They stared fearfully at the shadows cast from the sky, utterly panicked, able only to follow their instincts and search for somewhere to hide.
"Run!!!! Run! The dragons are going to destroy this city!"
"The dragons are here! The dragons are here!"
"Mom! Mom! I don't want to die!"
No one could blame them for reacting this way. In Faerun, even children who had only just learned to speak knew what terrifyingly powerful creatures dragons were.
Dragons were dreadful beasts standing at the top of the Prime Material Plane's food chain. Even a single dragon could inflict unimaginable destruction upon a city. A flock of them could utterly destroy any nation.
During the Year of the Dracorage, dragons across the entire Faerun Continent had fallen into complete madness under the influence of the Dracorage Mythal. Dragon armies numbering in the thousands gathered together and burned nearly half of southern Faerun to the ground... Countless villages and cities turned to ash beneath dragon breath, and hundreds of thousands of lives perished in that catastrophe. Even Mintar, a city protected by powerful mage lords, had not escaped disaster and had been reduced completely to ruins. Only a very few powerful spellcasters had survived.
Such terrifying destructive power was enough to make every ruler tremble from the depths of their heart. Though that had happened a very, very long time ago, that world-destroying power remained firmly etched in everyone's minds. Otherwise, why would dragons enjoy robbery so much? Under normal circumstances, dragons did not even need to do anything; cities and villages that saw a dragon descend would willingly hand over their valuables.
