When Solam and the others arrived in the Duchy of Toussaint, it was autumn—the most beautiful season in the duchy. The Duchy of Toussaint had another name across the continent: the Maple Leaf Country. From the grand duke down to the common folk, everyone in this nation loved maple leaves, which was why maple trees could be found everywhere.
In this duchy, every household had two kinds of plants in its backyard: grapevines and maple trees.
Thus, as Solam and the others traveled through the country, blazing red maple trees filled their view. Beneath the warm, pleasant autumn sunlight, those fiery leaves always carried an unreal beauty, as though they had truly stepped into a fairy-tale world.
Solam liked the environment here very much, especially because the people were so clean!
That was extremely important!
Solam would swear that this was the cleanest country he had seen since arriving in Faerûn. The streets were not absolutely spotless, but they were certainly nothing like the filthy, chaotic, squalid cities elsewhere in Faerûn. More importantly, in the cities of the Duchy of Toussaint, Solam actually saw public toilets and public bathhouses!!!
It was practically a miracle. It was the first time Solam had seen those two public facilities in a human city!
Although Faerûn was a highly developed civilized world, public awareness was extremely weak. Many places had no public sanitation facilities at all, so the larger the city, the more disgusting it became. Take Athkatla, for example. Could you imagine a city with over two million people having no public toilets?
Yet that was the reality—there really were no public toilets there... Just think about how much waste two million people produced every day, and how none of it had anywhere it was supposed to go. Many people simply relieved themselves
