Background / History

Kakashi entered the Ninja Academy as a masked, reticent prodigy. His father, Hatake Sakumo, recognized Shu Furukawa as an even greater ninjutsu talent, which sharpened Kakashi’s competitive drive toward Shu. He treated games and training alike as contests he had to win, though Shu repeatedly defeated him in their early sparring. 1 2 4

At five, Kakashi graduated from the Academy ahead of his peers. His refined chakra control, combat instincts, and rapid technique execution led to his promotion to Chunin at six, but his comparatively limited chakra reserves became a persistent concern. 5 7 13 28

After Sakumo’s death, Kakashi struggled under his father’s legacy and initially adopted a harsh belief that comrades who failed missions were not worth saving. He chose to retain the White Fang Short Blade, but resolved to develop a sword style of his own rather than imitate Sakumo. Shu later taught him Lightning Release and Chidori, while warning him not to abuse the technique’s dangerous chakra cost. 17

During the Kannabi Bridge patrol, Kakashi initially chose the broader mission over rescuing the captured Rin Nohara. Obito’s defiance and Namiashi Raidō’s appeal to their duty as comrades made him reverse his decision; Kakashi consumed secret medicine and joined the rescue despite the risk. 106 He was badly wounded while protecting Obito against Iwagakure jonin, then later reflected that he needed to change himself rather than blame his teammates. 107 109

Kakashi later died and reunited with Sakumo in the afterlife. There, father and son forgave one another: Sakumo admitted that his suicide had burdened Kakashi, while Kakashi recognized the harm caused by his own rigid beliefs. Mei Terumi and Shu Furukawa’s spirit subsequently resurrected Kakashi and Rin, though Mei demanded two future favors in exchange. 121
