Background / History

Early life in Konoha

Obito grew up as an overlooked Uchiha student whose shuriken skills and stamina failed to match the clan's reputation. Other students considered him an exception among the Uchiha, while even his clansmen treated him as an insignificant nobody. He nevertheless showed talent in practical combat and trained intensely to close the gap with Kakashi. 6 8 62 96

He wanted to bear the Uchiha crest, join the Police Force, and become Hokage. His insecurity over Kakashi and other Uchiha prodigies repeatedly surfaced, but Rin Nohara consistently encouraged him; her support became the center of his emotional life. 43 62 66 115

During the Kannabi Bridge incident, Obito rushed to save Rin despite being overwhelmed by fear against Iwagakure jonin. Following the ensuing turmoil, he disappeared from Konoha and later regained consciousness in Madara Uchiha's underground cavern. 107 111

Madara's proxy

Madara exploited Obito's isolation, fear of being forgotten, and attachment to Rin. He taught Obito to use the Sharingan, repeatedly framed Konoha as a world that had abandoned him, and pushed him to identify Rin as more important than the village. 111 113

After suffering further trauma, Obito accepted Madara's teachings in Six Paths techniques, Yin–Yang Release, and Susanoo. Madara also convinced him that Shu Furukawa was responsible for the suffering around him and would seek the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path for himself. 123 124

Witnessing the deprivation and violence endured by small-country ninja hardened Obito's resolve. He declared that “Obito Uchiha of Konoha's Uchiha Clan” was dead, inherited Madara's name, and committed himself to ending reality through the Eye of the Moon Plan. 128 132

Appearance

As “Madara,” Obito conceals his identity behind a mask and commonly operates while fused with White Zetsu. By his return to Kirigakure, he had grown to nearly 180 centimeters with White Zetsu attached to him. 160

  • Scarlet Sharingan eyes; later manifests complex Mangekyō patterns. 124 142
  • Usually wears a mask while posing as Madara Uchiha. 169 206
  • The right half of his body is enhanced with Hashirama Cells, which he considers the true basis of his survival and strength. 171
  • His Susanoo is blue rather than the purple form expected by Konoha's Uchiha observers. 216
  • Can alter his apparent body and voice through White Zetsu possession while using Madara's identity. 132 134

Personality

Obito was initially kind-hearted, earnest, and awkward. He habitually helped elderly women, trained hard despite poor results, and sincerely wanted to protect his companions. His dream of becoming Hokage remained tied to a need for recognition from both Konoha and the Uchiha Clan. 62 66 105

His affection for Rin became possessive and destabilizing after Madara's manipulation. Seeing Rin and Kakashi together causes intense jealousy, despair, and further growth in his ocular power; rather than confront them directly, he convinces himself that their revived selves are impostors. 157 158 160

As Madara's successor, Obito becomes calculating, cold, and willing to manipulate Nagato, Konan, Orochimaru, Danzo, and the wider ninja world. However, he remains emotionally divided between the ruthless “Madara” persona and the part of him that still wants to return to Kakashi and protect Rin. 137 160 183 216

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan

Obito's ocular power grows sharply through emotional pain and despair, progressing from a two-tomoe Sharingan to Mangekyō-level techniques and advanced Susanoo manifestations. 111 123 216

  • Uses ocular power to place targets under genjutsu, including Orochimaru. 216
  • Can read much, but not all, of the Uchiha stone tablet at Naka Shrine. 160 186
  • His ocular power increases through emotional upheaval, particularly his fixation on Rin and Kakashi. 158 194 206
  • Excessive use causes bleeding, blurred vision, chakra depletion, and loss of mobility. 169 216

Kamui

Obito's Mangekyō space-time technique allows him to phase through attacks, travel through vortices, and send targets into his private dimension. 131 134

  • Bypasses ordinary barriers and traps through intangibility. 144 160 206
  • Can abduct targets by warping them away, as shown when he captures Orochimaru in Amegakure. 134
  • Uses the Kamui Dimension as a refuge, storage space, and operating base. 160 183
  • Full spatial escape and transporting others consume substantial ocular power; Konoha's prepared barrier and Iron Sand ambush force him into a near-fatal retreat. 216

Susanoo

Obito develops a blue Susanoo from a skeletal manifestation into an armored, double-layered, third-stage form. 124 160 212 216

  • Provides major defensive protection during combat and explosions. 215 216
  • Its weaponized attacks are described as capable of tearing through space. 160
  • Shu Furukawa's Sage Art: Iron Sand Coffin Binding and Iron Sand Funeral crush and destroy the third-stage form. 216

Six Paths Techniques and Yin–Yang Release

Madara teaches Obito Six Paths techniques and Yin–Yang Release as part of preparing him to direct the Eye of the Moon Plan. 123

  • Instructs Nagato in Six Paths techniques and the use of six modified bodies. 137 142
  • Uses this knowledge to build influence in Amegakure and guide Nagato toward Akatsuki's objectives. 131 137
  • Cannot control or summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path despite his Mangekyō Sharingan, limiting his ability to enact the plan independently. 142 186

White Zetsu Integration

A White Zetsu attaches itself to Obito before his disappearance from Konoha and later becomes integral to his survival and covert operations. 105 111

  • Alters his body, conceals his identity, and supports the “Madara” disguise. 132 134
  • Supplies replacement body parts and chakra after severe injuries. 171 216
  • Enables communication with White Zetsu intelligence networks. 157 168
  • His enhanced right side sustains heavy damage, and his body can collapse after pushing Kamui beyond its limits. 169 171

Relationships

  • Rin Nohara — Childhood teammate and the person Obito loves most. Her encouragement sustained him in Konoha, while her relationship with Kakashi later becomes the main trigger for his despair and ocular growth. 62 113 158 206
  • Kakashi Hatake — Rival, teammate, and former friend. Obito resents Kakashi's talent and closeness to Rin, yet still considers returning to him after his defeat. 17 37 183 216
  • Madara Uchiha — Rescuer, mentor, and manipulator. Madara teaches Obito the Sharingan, Six Paths techniques, and Susanoo before Obito inherits his name and plan. 111 123 128 132
  • White Zetsu — Attached companion, intelligence source, and physical support system. White Zetsu regularly mocks Obito but replenishes his chakra and body when necessary. 105 160 216
  • Black Zetsu — Madara's purported will and an uneasy adviser. Obito grows suspicious of Black Zetsu after learning he cannot control the Demonic Statue as promised. 132 142 186
  • Nagato — Key partner in the Eye of the Moon Plan. Obito trains him in Six Paths techniques, but Nagato and Konan increasingly distrust Obito's power and motives. 137 160
  • Konan — Nagato's ally and a wary collaborator. She distrusts Obito's identity and fears the speed and lethality of his space-time technique. 137 144 160
  • Shu Furukawa — Obito's primary enemy. Madara frames Shu as the hidden architect of the world's suffering; their conflict culminates in repeated battles and Obito's devastating defeat at Konoha's ambush. 123 169 215 216
  • Kisame Hoshigaki — Loyal subordinate recruited into Obito's organization. Kisame supports Obito's attempted rescue of Orochimaru and witnesses his collapse after the ambush. 212 216
  • Orochimaru — Transactional ally. Obito seeks Orochimaru's help removing Madara's Cursed Seal in exchange for assistance awakening the Mangekyō Sharingan. 186 216

Story Role / Major Arcs

Taking over Madara's plan

Following Madara's death, Obito assumes the name “Madara Uchiha,” commands the White Zetsu, and begins the Eye of the Moon Plan by targeting Nagato and the Rinnegan. 132

He manipulates Amegakure through Nagato, plans Kirigakure's takeover through the Fourth Mizukage, and attempts to establish Akatsuki as the organization capable of reshaping the ninja world. 137 144 146

Pursuit of a world without ninja

Obito ultimately reinterprets the Eye of the Moon Plan as a way to eliminate the ninja profession itself. After witnessing the suffering in smaller nations, he concludes that ninja society killed both Rin and his former self. 128 164

His inability to control the Demonic Statue and the Cursed Seal placed on his heart create tension with Black Zetsu and motivate his dealings with Orochimaru. 142 164 186

Conflict with Konoha and Shu Furukawa

Obito's belief that Rin and Kakashi are false resurrected versions of his friends drives him to target Shu Furukawa. He attacks during the Nine-Tails incident and confronts Shu at the Valley of the End, where he loses his right arm and barely survives in the Kamui Dimension. 158 169 171

He later attacks Kakashi's team under the Madara persona, attempts to use Orochimaru's defection to demonstrate overwhelming power, and walks into Konoha's prepared ambush in the Land of Rice Fields. 206 212 216

Konoha seals his spatial coordinates, destroys his third-stage Susanoo, and leaves him dependent on White Zetsu replacement parts and chakra replenishment. In the aftermath, Obito briefly considers abandoning his role as Madara and confessing everything to Kakashi. 216
