Ch. 21Building a Bond
Chapter Summary: “Cultivating Feelings”
Key Plot Points and Events
- Naruto meets the Nine-Tails within his mindscape and treats it pragmatically rather than emotionally. He neither hates nor befriends the beast, viewing it mainly as a source of power and training.
- Because the Nine-Tails cooperates, Naruto removes the seal restraining it. The beast is deeply moved by experiencing freedom for the first time, but remains obedient because it knows Naruto is powerful enough to suppress it easily through sealing and chakra absorption.
- Jiraiya is alarmed by Naruto’s decision and offers to reinforce the seal. Naruto refuses, asking that the situation remain secret—especially from the Third Hokage.
- Jiraiya agrees to stay in Konoha and monitor Naruto until he is convinced the Nine-Tails poses no danger. Naruto dislikes being watched but accepts, partly because he respects Jiraiya and sees the situation as an opportunity to rest and spend time with Hinata.
- Naruto returns to the Academy in his real body, claiming that he wants to experience ordinary school life before graduation. He spends the school day socializing with Hinata, Shikamaru, and the others.
- During combat practice, Naruto is paired with Sasuke. Both understand Naruto’s true strength and agree to fight using only taijutsu. Naruto deliberately holds back, allowing the match to end in a draw, but the result still shocks the class.
- Sakura begins to recognize Naruto’s strength and notices how much more restrained and inconspicuous he has become.
- The Third Hokage notices Jiraiya’s return and questions an Anbu operative about Naruto. The Anbu reports that Naruto has caused no trouble and is spending considerable time with Hinata.
- Naruto abandons intensive training for the time being and enjoys his normal life, but his spending on outings with Hinata leaves his Frog Wallet empty.
Character Development
- Naruto: Demonstrates enormous confidence in his ability to control the Nine-Tails. He becomes more socially engaged and deliberately chooses to enjoy ordinary experiences, particularly time with Hinata. Although he dislikes surveillance, he handles Jiraiya’s presence patiently and shows greater emotional maturity.
- Nine-Tails: Its view of Naruto shifts significantly after Naruto removes the seal. It experiences gratitude and relief but remains cautious, recognizing that Naruto still holds overwhelming power over it.
- Jiraiya: Becomes protective and suspicious of the risks surrounding Naruto. He stays in the village to observe him, while also returning to his familiar, carefree and lecherous habits.
- Hinata: Is visibly pleased by Naruto’s decision to attend school and spend time with her. Their relationship grows closer through ordinary conversations and shared activities.
- Sasuke: Shows a tacit understanding with Naruto, cooperating with him during their taijutsu match and recognizing that Naruto is far stronger than he appears.
- Third Hokage: Remains suspicious of Jiraiya’s return and continues monitoring Naruto through the Anbu, though he receives no evidence of misconduct.
Significant Themes
- Trust and controlled freedom: Naruto grants the Nine-Tails freedom because it cooperates, but the relationship remains based on mutual awareness of power rather than genuine friendship.
- Surveillance and secrecy: Naruto resents being watched and deliberately keeps the Nine-Tails’ condition hidden from the Third Hokage.
- Normalcy versus power: Despite possessing extraordinary strength, Naruto wants to experience school, friendships, and leisure like an ordinary child.
- Growing relationships: Naruto’s connection with Hinata develops through simple daily interactions rather than dramatic events.
- Hidden strength: Naruto repeatedly conceals his abilities, allowing others to underestimate him while maintaining control over situations.
