Hearing Lin Fei, Wu Zhen, and Zhou Wangdao talking, Wu Yuqing felt bored.
"Dad, Uncle Zhou, could you two change the subject?"
"Didn't we invite Lin Fei to dinner today? Everyone's here, so shouldn't the food be served?"
Wu Zhen shook his head with a smile. He had always doted on his daughter like she was the apple of his eye, indulging her in everything.
"Heh, all right. Let's eat while we talk!"
Wu Zhen gave the order, and soon one exquisite dish after another was brought to the table.
There were only four of them, yet they had ordered more than thirty dishes.
"Lin Fei, don't be shy. Eat whatever you like!"
Just as Lin Fei was about to pick up his chopsticks, the door suddenly swung open from the outside, and a young man in a suit walked in.
"Uncle Wu, Yuqing!"
"I heard you were having dinner here, so I came by to pay my respects. I hope I'm not interrupting?"
Wu Yuqing furrowed her brow slightly, clearly not fond of the young man.
"Cao Rui, what are you doing here?"
Cao Rui glanced at the others, then let his gaze settle on Lin Fei.
Lin Fei was seated between Wu Zhen on his left and Wu Yuqing on his right.
That wasn't a seat just anyone could take. You had to be someone extremely close to them, or someone Wu Zhen and Wu Yuqing both valued highly.
"I'm meeting a client here to discuss a business deal. I don't believe I've met this talented young man. Could you introduce us?"
Wu Zhen smiled as he introduced them. "This is Lin Fei, a friend of Yuqing's."
"Lin Fei, this is Cao Rui. He's one of the most outstanding young talents in Yunzhou. He founded his own company at a young age."
At the introduction, a cold glint flashed in Cao Rui's eyes.
Those five words, "a friend of Yuqing's," left plenty open to interpretation.
Was Lin Fei just an ordinary friend, or was he her boyfriend?
He had been pursuing Wu Yuqing for a long time, but she had always treated him with cool indifference.
Now Lin Fei had suddenly appeared, and he couldn't help feeling displeased.
He pulled out a chair and was about to sit beside Wu Yuqing when she put out a hand to stop him.
"Cao Rui, do you have no sense at all? Can't you see this is a family dinner? Outsiders aren't welcome."
Cao Rui's expression turned awkward.
But he didn't dare make a scene. After all, neither Wu Zhen nor Wu Yuqing was someone he could afford to offend.
"I was presumptuous, Uncle Wu. I'll take my leave, then. I'll visit you another time."
"Oh, right. I brought this red wine back from a French vineyard especially for you. I hope you'll enjoy it."
"Yuqing, I also got you a little gift. It's the latest outfit designed this year by the fashion master Tina Chris. I'm sure you'll love it."
Cao Rui glanced toward the door, and his subordinate immediately brought in the gifts.
Wu Yuqing didn't spare him any courtesy. "Cao Rui, can you stop pursuing me? I've already told you that I'm not interested in you."
Wu Zhen cleared his throat and hurriedly said, "Cao Rui, thank you for the thought. Just leave the gifts here."
Cao Rui nodded with a false smile, had the gifts set down, and turned to leave.
Zhou Wangdao couldn't help laughing. "Heh, Yuqing, you could at least save him some face in front of everyone."
"Whatever you say about it, the Cao Family is a prominent family in Yunzhou, and Cao Rui is a fine young man. Why are you so cold to him?"
"Humph!"
Wu Yuqing looked thoroughly disdainful. There were too many rich young heirs pursuing her, and she was already sick of it.
"Uncle Zhou, you have no idea. Every time I see Cao Rui, I think he's unbearably fake."
"You can insult him, and he'll still grin at you, all obsequious and servile. I know exactly what he's after. Dad only has me for a daughter. Whoever marries me will inherit the Wu Family's business someday."
Wu Zhen sighed. "As the saying goes, you don't hit someone who comes smiling. Even if he's after our family fortune, you don't need to shut him out completely."
"You're grown up now. You'll have to get married eventually. If you turn every man who pursues you away with icy words, who'll dare court you in the future?"
Wu Yuqing glanced at Lin Fei beside her. He seemed like a mere bystander, not joining the conversation at all, just steadily working his way through the food.
"Lin Fei, didn't you just break up with someone? Why don't you try pursuing me?"
Lin Fei replied unruffled, "I'll pass."
"What's wrong? Do you think you're not good enough for me?"
Wu Yuqing assumed Lin Fei thought they were from different worlds and that he couldn't reach high enough to marry into her family.
"It's fine. I don't care about your background, and neither does my dad. As long as you can make me happy and win Dad's approval, I can take you in as a live-in son-in-law."
"You're getting more and more ridiculous. Stop teasing Lin Fei!"
Wu Zhen feigned displeasure and cut Wu Yuqing off.
He did admire Lin Fei a little, but he hadn't gone so far as to consider making him his son-in-law.
If he had to choose, he preferred Cao Rui.
After all, Cao Rui's family background and personal abilities were both exceptional among men his age.
But even if Wu Zhen had taken a liking to Lin Fei, Lin Fei had no interest in becoming anyone's live-in son-in-law.
The Wu Family might be rich and powerful, but with the gold, silver, and jewelry he had obtained from Nanli City, he'd be a billionaire if he exchanged them for cash.
By then, what beautiful woman wouldn't be within his grasp?
Wu Zhen had someone open a bottle of red wine, then tasted it with Lin Fei and Zhou Wangdao.
After a few rounds of drinks, Wu Zhen finally got down to business.
"Lin Fei, besides thanking you, I also invited you to dinner because I'd like to ask you for a favor."
"What favor?"
"Could you get me a few more of those Small Foundation Pills? Don't worry, I won't ask you to help for free. I can buy them from you. We can discuss the price."
Lin Fei looked up at Wu Zhen and readily agreed.
"No problem. How about three?"
Wu Zhen couldn't hide his delight. He wanted to buy the Small Foundation Pills partly to be prepared, in case he suffered another internal injury in the future.
He also felt that the pills might help him break through to Dark Force.
Pills this precious would be useful even if he didn't need them himself. He could sell them later or give them as a favor, either of which would be well worth it.
"What do you think would be a fair price?"
Lin Fei replied, "Uncle Wu, with all due respect, measuring the value of a Small Foundation Pill in money feels a little too vulgar."
"According to the old divine physician, no one in the world besides him can refine them."
"If they had a fixed price, who knows how many people would rush to buy them?"
Zhou Wangdao nodded repeatedly, in complete agreement.
"That's right. These Small Foundation Pills are tremendously valuable for medical use. They'd be worth even more if they could be used for medical research, but unfortunately, I can't afford one."
Wu Zhen asked, puzzled, "I can't just take the pills for free. If you don't want money, what can I give you?"
Besides money, his most precious possession was his daughter.
Could Lin Fei be hoping to become his son-in-law?
