Background / History
Academy Life and the Poison Problem
Dugu Yan studies in Heaven Dou Royal Academy’s Elite Seed Class under Qin Ming. Before meeting Liu Bai, she is already close to Ye Lingling and openly dislikes spoiled aristocrats such as Xue Beng. Liu Bai initially seeks her out because befriending Dugu Bo’s granddaughter offers a route to the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well 8 9.
After a year together, she invites Liu Bai to accompany her and her grandfather on a Soul Ring hunt. At Dugu Bo’s valley cabin afterward, Liu Bai warns her that toxins from her Jade Phosphorous Serpent can gradually accumulate in her body through Martial Soul Possession. Initially dismissive because she feels healthy and specializes in poison, she becomes alarmed and wonders whether the same problem affected her father 13 15.
Liu Bai proposes storing the toxins in a Soul Bone, then identifies immortal herbs that offer another solution: Martial Soul evolution. Dugu Bo tests an Earth Dragon Golden Melon first before allowing his granddaughter to absorb the other. Her subsequent evolution and cultivation increase follow the successful treatment at the well 15 16 17 18.
Formation of the Second Team
Liu Bai teaches Dugu Yan cultivation and combat techniques suited to her poison attribute. By the academy’s tournament selection, she is its strongest student after him. She defeats challengers without summoning her Martial Soul and blocks competition for the final main-team position to secure it for Ning Rongrong 23 27 51.
When Liu Bai returns, he declines the main-team places and proposes a separate team consisting of himself, Dugu Yan, Ye Lingling, and Ning Rongrong. Dugu Yan supports the decision, declaring that their Second Team will follow an elite approach rather than carry weaker teammates 52.
Conflict with Shrek
Dugu Yan confronts the Shrek visitors after their clash with academy students. Ma Hongjun’s insults provoke Liu Bai into severely injuring him and overpowering several Shrek teachers. Dugu Yan remains hostile even after Qin Ming persuades Liu Bai to stop 98 99 100 101.
When the Shrek students are temporarily assigned to the Second Team, she rejects Yu Xiaogang’s attempt to assume authority over its training. Tang San challenges her, but her speed and poisonous palm technique overwhelm his Blue Silver Grass. She supplies an antidote afterward and dismisses his objection to her use of poison 102 103 105 106.
In a later team match, she takes on the Shrek Six Monsters, destroys their initial attacks, and overwhelms Dai Mubai and Zhu Zhuqing’s Hell White Tiger with speed and poison. Tang San’s evasive movement and hidden weapons expose her limited practical experience despite her superior power. Liu Bai intervenes when Tang San launches Dragon Whisker Needles 130 132 133 134.
Soul Master Tournament
Dugu Yan promises to sweep the tournament even while Liu Bai is occupied elsewhere. The Second Team finishes the preliminaries undefeated, and she eliminates Shrek with a one-versus-seven victory in the knockout stage. Her retaliation against Ma Hongjun for his earlier insults leaves him castrated 160 173.
She also breaks through to Soul Emperor during the competition, revealing six Soul Rings before the Martial Soul Hall Academy team 174.
Divine Cultivation
Dugu Yan later cultivates with Dugu Bo at the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well while Liu Bai handles other affairs. Although reluctant to part from him, she accepts his priorities and continues training 193 201.
At Sea God Island, Liu Bai gives her a Tier 8 Unity Pill to improve her aptitude. She endures its painful transformation while he remains beside her for three days. Afterward, she reaches level 90, and an emerald forehead mark emits a pillar of light. Bo Saixi confirms that the Sea God has selected her for his Nine Trials 258 259.
Liu Bai had originally intended to arrange the God of Water position for her; after her selection by the Sea God, he instead considers that position for Ye Lingling. Dugu Yan’s godhood is confirmed on his later return, before the group departs for the God Realm 258 259 344 347.
Appearance
Dugu Yan has a tall, slender figure and long purple hair that drapes over her shoulders. Her usual expression combines confidence with a relaxed, noble bearing 15 34.
- Purple hair — Present since childhood; she believes its unusual color is hereditary and recalls that her father’s hair had a greenish tint 15.
- Willow-leaf brows — Draw together when she examines Liu Bai’s injured hand after a sparring match 12.
- Pale purple long dress — Worn when she meets Ning Rongrong at the academy 34.
- Emerald forehead mark — Emits a sky-reaching pillar of light when she is chosen for the Sea God’s trials 259.
Personality
Dugu Yan is proud, direct, and confrontational. She judges academy students by their ability rather than their noble background, openly challenges Yu Xiaogang’s authority, and uses her own strength to force a tournament opportunity for Ning Rongrong. Her confidence can become overconfidence: against Tang San, superior cultivation does not fully compensate for her shortage of practical combat experience 9 51 103 129 133.
With friends, she is physically affectionate and mischievous. She teases Liu Bai, pinches his cheeks, and enthusiastically embraces Ye Lingling after her Martial Soul evolves. Her early possessiveness appears when Liu Bai introduces Ning Rongrong or stays away overnight; later, she accepts that he will not belong to her alone 28 34 52 58 345.
Her protectiveness can be ruthless. After learning that Liu Bai has been attacked, she proposes having Dugu Bo poison the Clear Sky Sect, though Liu Bai persuades her to wait. She also remembers Ma Hongjun’s insults and retaliates when they meet again in the tournament 88 173.

Nether Poison Secret Canon
Liu Bai teaches her the High Xuan-tier, poison-attribute Nether Poison Secret Canon, selected from cultivation arts held by the Jia Ma Empire 23.
- Improves her ability to control toxins 23.

Soul Ring Skills
- Fourth Soul Skill — Jade Scale Poison Dragon Blast: The dragon phantom fires an emerald beam whose impact withers, blackens, and breaks apart the training-ground surface 130.

- Teleportation Soul Skill: Revealed during the match against the Shrek Six Monsters; its ring number is not specified 131.
Supported Combat
Her coordination with Ning Rongrong and Ye Lingling allows her to fight above her cultivation rank 101.
- With both women supporting her and her two combat techniques in use, most Soul Emperors are no match for her even while she is a Soul King 101.
- Liu Bai remains overwhelmingly stronger and uses their sparring sessions to guide her rather than fight at full strength 101.
Equipment / Items
- Storage Soul Tool — Carries dry rations and water during the stay at Dugu Bo’s valley cabin 15.

- Liu Bai — Friend, cultivation mentor, and romantic partner. Their teasing, sibling-like familiarity develops into openly mutual affection; they confess their feelings with Dugu Bo’s approval. She later expresses her acceptance of his other relationships 13 23 74 206 345.

- Yu Xiaogang — Opponent in disputes over teaching and cultivation knowledge. She rejects his assumption of authority and threatens him when he pressures Liu Bai about his private technique 103 107 137.
