Ch. 81Nine-Tails
Plot points
- Yi Xiang enters Naruto’s subconscious with his Three-Tomoe Sharingan after Naruto says the Nine-Tails wants to meet him. Kakashi is asked to watch over Naruto for ten minutes.
- Inside the seal, Yi Xiang calmly addresses the Nine-Tails as Kurama and argues that the Sage of Six Paths intended the tailed beasts to understand humanity and find meaning beyond being used as weapons.
- Kurama is startled and suspicious that Yi Xiang knows this hidden history. Yi Xiang claims a “Divine Art” lets him learn more than a century of past events and the broad outline of the next five years, but leaves when his teacher calls.
- The chapter then shifts abruptly to a first-person recollection set on July 7. A masked woman returns to her desolate homeland and remembers meeting a young wandering swordsman ten years earlier.
Character developments and interactions
- Yi Xiang displays confidence and composure before Kurama, and reveals that his knowledge extends beyond ordinary means. His gentle, philosophical approach contrasts with Kurama’s hostility.
- Naruto appears briefly in his inner world, surprised that Yi Xiang has entered.
- Kurama reacts with anger toward the Sharingan but becomes unsettled by Yi Xiang’s knowledge of the Sage’s intentions.
- In the closing recollection, the Mysterious Sword Sect Leader recalls sparing the swordsman who saw her unmasked face. She recognizes a reflection of her own childhood in him, suggesting the encounter stirred unexpected compassion.
Themes
- Understanding across divides: Yi Xiang urges Kurama to seek connection with humans rather than remain defined as a weapon.
- Knowledge and secrecy: Kurama questions how Yi Xiang can know forbidden history, while Yi Xiang’s claimed foresight raises questions about his power.
- Loneliness, memory, and compassion: The final passage centers on an isolated figure, an unfulfilled promise, and the surprising mercy sparked by recognizing oneself in another.
