Background / History

Rin served as the hidden support member of Uesugi Shinji and Kisame Hoshigaki's three-person Kirigakure squad. Her Shadow Release allowed her to conceal herself in light, shadows, reflections, and water surfaces, where she waited for opportunities to scout, ambush, or reinforce her teammates. Though she presented herself as an emotionless assassin, she was a dependable partner who quietly watched over Shinji's injuries and supplied him with medicine after missions. 7 8

Disillusioned with ANBU work, particularly missions that involved killing Kirigakure's own ninjas, Rin hoped her squad's achievements would let them leave the organization. Over time, she and Kisame adopted Shinji's principle of valuing comrades above the village. 8 9

Rin initially viewed Terumi Mei as a rival and reacted badly whenever Shinji praised her. Their rivalry softened after they fought Konoha's Ino–Shika–Chō team together; Mei's respect for Rin's abilities diminished Rin's hostility. 13 42 47

Personality

Rin habitually acts aloof, blunt, and indifferent, but this façade conceals deep concern for her companions. She is especially prone to tsundere behavior around Shinji: she downplays acts of care, becomes flustered when her feelings are noticed, and reacts jealously to Terumi Mei. 8 13 72
