Background / History

The Third Hokage personally promoted Minato and regarded him as Konoha's greatest asset; even before the Third Shinobi World War, Minato's strength had subtly surpassed the Hokage's own. The Third also valued Minato's understanding of the Will of Fire. 23

During Konoha's support mission to the Land of Wind, Minato commanded a force of one hundred shinobi through the Forest Fortress. When Kirigakure ambushed the unit, he scattered his signature kunai across the battlefield and used the Flying Thunder God Technique to kill eight enemy ninja in an instant. 26 28 His mobility stabilized Konoha's position against Kirigakure, though Terumi Mei and Uesugi Shinji's coordinated interference demonstrated that his marked kunai could be countered. 29 30

Minato subsequently supported Sunagakure against Kumogakure alone. His repeated victories against the AB Duo made the “Yellow Flash” a battlefield terror; Kumogakure established a rule permitting shinobi to abandon missions if they encountered him. He was recognized as the strongest of the war's rising ninja and later returned to hold Terumi Mei's forces in check around Konoha. 35
