Background / History

The Uchiha are one of Konoha's two founding clans. Their Sharingan bloodline and prominent fighters made them one of the village's greatest military assets, though tensions with Konoha's leadership had nearly become irreparable by the beginning of Namikaze Minato's term as Fourth Hokage. Minato's conciliatory but firm approach drew the clan back from open conflict with the village. 173

During the Third Shinobi World War, Uchiha Fugaku withheld much of the clan's strength from the front lines, arguing that its members were needed to protect Konoha's rear. The Third Hokage could not directly command either the Uchiha or Danzō's forces, forcing inexperienced newly promoted chūnin into active war zones instead. 38

A decade later, Fugaku, Shisui, and Itachi had made the clan one of Konoha's most formidable assets. Both Shisui and Itachi were fiercely loyal to the village and served as trusted subordinates of Minato. 171 173

Itachi's death destabilized the clan. Elder Uchiha Inabi blamed Konoha's high command and attempted to incite a coup, but Fugaku rejected his accusations and ordered him to stop spreading rebellion. Inabi subsequently allied with Shimura Danzō and Obito, who posed as Uchiha Madara. 277

Inabi seized control after Fugaku's death, falsely reporting that the clan head had become ill and using an Uchiha insider to assist Akatsuki's infiltration of Konoha. After the crisis, Inabi's collaborators were arrested and eliminated; with Fugaku and Itachi dead, Minato appointed Shisui as the new clan head. 278 310

Sharingan

The Sharingan is the Uchiha clan's principal Kekkei Genkai. It manifests Yin Release chakra, which originates from spiritual energy; Uchiha are consequently noted for unusually strong spiritual energy and talent for genjutsu. 3 175

The Mangekyō Sharingan is an advanced development of the Sharingan. It can awaken naturally once an Uchiha's spiritual energy reaches the necessary threshold; emotional trauma can accelerate this process, rather than being an absolute requirement. 183

• Fugaku awakened his Mangekyō through extreme emotional stimulation, while Itachi and Shisui could awaken theirs through continued growth of their spiritual energy. 183

Uchiha Sword Arts

Itachi and Shisui refined the Uchiha clan's sword style into one of the ninja world's top-tier sword arts. Their style combines Fire Release chakra with high-speed movement and Sharingan-assisted precision. 232

Three Sacred Treasures

The Three Sacred Treasures were inherited through Indra's lineage and ultimately kept by the Uchiha clan. A past clan head sealed them in the clan's forbidden grounds, and their location and unsealing method were later lost during the clan's migrations. Itachi and Shisui eventually rediscovered and unsealed them. 267
