History
Conflict with Konoha and the Five Kage Summit
Internal dissent is visible under First Kazekage Retto. Kazama Ryojin and Kurogarasu resent his dealings with the daimyo; Retto, in turn, fears that their plan to assassinate the ruler could bring war or damage Sunagakure’s finances 72 76.
When a Sunagakure patrol shoots down an explosive bird sent by Konoha’s Hyuga Hoshishaku, the blast destroys the village entrance and nearby buildings without causing casualties. Hoshishaku arrives with Senju Yuto and Uchiha Rinne to deliver an invitation to the Five Kage Summit. Their confrontation with Retto ends after Yuto demonstrates Wood Release and powerful Water Release 77 78.
Retto allows news of the encounter to spread, hoping the defeat will motivate Sunagakure’s ninjas, and orders spies to watch the three Konoha visitors. At the summit, Sunagakure receives the Seven-Tails, Chōmei, in addition to the One-Tail, Shukaku. Retto also pays a ransom for Shamon’s return 79 115.
War in the Land of Rivers
After Hashirama’s death, Sunagakure mobilizes against Konoha. Hoshishaku is assigned to command Konoha’s thousand-strong force on the Sunagakure front and attempt to seize the Land of Rivers 117 118.
| Event | Sunagakure’s position |
|---|---|
| Opening clash | Hoshishaku’s surprise attack inflicts heavy losses. Sunagakure abandons its concentrated advance and disperses into roughly two thousand three-person squads 120 121. |
| Further setbacks | Konoha captures the Seven-Tails jinchūriki. Retto sends Shamon home to safeguard the village and succeed him as Second Kazekage 123 124. |
| Decisive battle | Hoshishaku seals Retto, and Konoha defeats the remaining force; Sand ninjas who continue resisting are killed 126. |
Shamon later governs the relocated Sunagakure City as Second Kazekage. Years afterward, he joins other Kage in a confrontation with Senju Yuto in Konoha 152 193 195.
Events in the Other Timeline
During Hoshishaku’s later visit to another timeline, a three-thousand-strong Sunagakure army confronts Konoha under the Third Kazekage. Hoshishaku destroys around two thousand Sand ninjas and demands surrender. Chiyo surrenders on the village’s behalf, though Hoshishaku subsequently fatally burns the Third Kazekage with Amaterasu 171 172 173 175.
